(More customer reviews)I bought this book because it promised broad coverage of the currently most important non cellular, wireless technologies. We'll it delivers on the breadth of information but this is an extremely difficult book to read. Here's why:
1. It's coverage of the wireless subjects seems spotty and disorganized in that it jumps around between hardware and software subjects in an almost aimless way. Generally, the book does not provide sufficient and clear coverage of the system level or architectural issues for a given technology before deep diving into selected areas of technical detail. There tends to be too much detail in many specific technical areas without sufficient discussion of how the pieces work together.

2. It's written in broken English (actually seems to be poorly translated from French);
3. It is very poorly edited (includes many incorrect references to figures and tables, incomplete and broken sentences);
4. It suffers from death by acronyms. The book introduces the words behind the acronym once then never seems to use the "words" again, only the acronym. Unless you're already an expert in the subject, reading requires you to access the 16 page acronym dictionary after reading every few sentences. This is doable but makes reading difficult and clearly distracts the reader from appreciating the technical concepts being communicated.
Although the book seems to have a good deal of useful information. I would recommend that potential buyers look around for other coverage of the material before buying this hard to read book.

The book provides a complete and detailed description of the recent wireless technologies including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee and WiMAX. These technologies are considered to be important topics in the telecommunication industry in the next decade. Some critical subjects are particularly developed such as security, quality of service, roaming and power conservation. The book also includes some chapters on practical aspects.

(More customer reviews)This book is insightful and demonstrates quality work on space time channel models for macrocell and microcell wireless communication environments. The Author has considered aspects of advanced space-time signal processing in new generations of mobile communication. In particular, the application of the space time channel models to other communication systems such as space time coding and adaptive equalization. It also compares different channel models and their validation against practical data.
This book is well written, technically solid and articulates for the reader a grounded conduit for understanding space time mobile channel models and their modelling, validation and application in testing some of the wireless communication systems. I would recommend this book to those who study or research in telecommunication and applied signal processing.
The author has raised a challenge to other authors and researchers developing and communicating STCM concepts and to those working in this field of engineering.

Space-time processing plays a significant role in wireless communications. In particular, space-time coding demonstrated that it can greatly improve system capacity and error rate performance when data symbol energy is spread across space and time. Space-time channel models have proved to be of major significance in wireless communications as they provide the spatial and temporal information (i.e. direction-of-arrival (DOA) and time-of-arrival (TOA)) by which the performance of wireless communication systems and space-time systems (eg., smart antennas, beamformers, space-time equalizers, space-time coding) can be analysed. The main topic of this book is the modelling of spatial-temporal channel for wireless communications. This topic is of utmost importance in wireless communication and applied signal processing. Four different spatial-temporal channel models were proposed. These models provide directional information as well as temporal information for a mobile radio channel.We hope that this work will help people working in wireless communication and applied signal processing and inspire further research in these fields.

Quite like a galactic pinball machine, electronic packets of limitless information bounce off eachother in the very air we breath, and as such, must be careful not to walk into them. The information contained herein details multiple ways of preventing packet collision, and moreso, how to recover from near fatal 5 MPH collisions of packets to the face.

Collisions in wireless networks are a significantsource of packet loss. Most medium access controltechniques assume that a collision means total packetloss. However, we will show that this assumption isnot always true, and we investigate how to leveragethis fact.We first investigate fundamentally what happens whena collision occurs. We begin by deriving a physicallayer algorithm that can identify which bits havebeen corrupted by collision. This algorithmaccurately locates all collision induced errors whenthe channel signal to noise ratio is high enough forreliable communication. By leveraging this algorithm,we can produce a wide range of benefits. For example,by providing collisionlocation information, we can enhance forward errorcorrecting codes so that they may effectivelycompletely remove the collision, saving a packet thatwould otherwise be discarded.

A good real world overview of the shape of WSN including the Mica mote. There's other stuff on power, range and (honest) field trials as well as discussion on the practitioner's bugbear, WSN lifetime.

(More customer reviews)The book is well balanced between two things. Speculating on possible new types of businesses that might arise for mobile computing. And the technical constraints of current and future systems.
The authors rise about issues about current 3G deployment, or lack thereof. Instead, they ask what might constitute an improvement. What the authors are really looking for is another killer app. Something so viral that millions of users will gladly and quickly adopt. Unfortunately, none of the speculations seem that compelling thus far. No fault of the authors. Though perhaps if you really had such an opportunity, you would surely try to raise funding to implement it, rather than write a research paper.
