I've been through ALL the CCNA books out there -- from Lammle's CCNA book to all the various CCNA study guides and so on -- and this one book by Jeremy Cioara is the absolute best available.
The cover of this book looks generic and nondescript, but Cioara has an ability to not only communicate in an amazingly down-to-earth, plain English way that is incredible. Also, he not only is easy and engaging to read, but -- *gasp* -- he actually gets his facts straight!
If you've been through the official CCNA books, you probably think that you have no choice but just to memorize a lot of things without hope of ever getting a simple, commonsense explanation for them, but you would be wrong in that assumption, because Cioara actually explains the things you assumed no one could ever explain.
Get this book -- you'll be glad you did.

Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices, Part 1 (ICND1): CCNA Exam 640-802 and ICND1 Exam 640-822 (2nd Edition)

My background so you have some idea that I know of the subject I speak on:
- MCSE 2003/2000/NT CNE 6/5/3 CNA 4 (obviously, I've studied for over 20 exams)
- My mother is a retired English professor with 30+ publications to her name (I've been shown manuscripts as well as the review and correction processes).
Current Status: I read this book, credited to Stephen McQuery, in the past four days. I have begun using the Boson NetSim and ExamSim software to prepare for the exam which I plan to take in 1-2 weeks.
Book:
The book repeats itself unnecessarily in several locations. It's almost as if there were different authors with no coordination between authors and no single reviewer to catch the needless redundancy of information.
On occasion (I counted 2-3 instances), the author references an acronym, protocol, or other such important information for the first time, but the writing clearly expects that the reader have prior knowledge of the material. In these cases, the "assumed knowledge" is above entry-level and should have been presented prior to beginning the topic at hand.
Acronyms: sadly, many, such as EIGRP, are missing from the Index. This means that, when you forget what it stands for and the author references it by acronym only, you're at a loss as you don't have an index to tell you where to find information on that acronym. No, the spelled-out version wasn't in the index either.
Glossary: missing; doesn't exist. Readers would have found having a glossary beneficial as a quick reference for terms and acronyms.
From what I've seen of the NetSim and ExamSim, the book itself is missing some of the information you'll want to know for the actual CCENT exam. It's probably best to have some hands-on experience (through Simulators if you don't have access to the real thing).
Review Questions:
I found five errors in the review questions. One such error is so astoundingly obvious, one has to wonder if anyone actually checked the answers. P 478, Chapter 6 Review, Question 6. The posted answer is C, but, per the text on page 429, the correct answer is B.
There are a total of 258 review questions. Perhaps 5 wrong answers out of 258 (2.1% of the total) doesn't seem *that* bad, however, I expect better.
Overall thoughts: this book is a good stepping stone to get you towards CCENT certification. You'll need a little hands-on exposure to shore up the holes in knowledge and working knowledge.
I'll have a better understanding of how much actual exam material was addressed by the book after I take the exam.

I have used Todd Lammle's books for several certification exams and I can attest to this book as another notch in that process. I passed my CCENT exam today with a 925 and I could not have done it without this book.
The other book that I used was Ciscos CCENT/CCNA ICND1 book written by Wendell Odem. This book and the free CD that comes with it closely resemble what the exam entails.
With that said, why buy Todd Lammle's book? Easy. Todd explains the Cisco concepts, theory, in understandable terms that you walk away with knowledge and not scratching you head saying, huh?
Now that I have taken a Cisco exam I know what to look for. I have both Todd Lammle's CCNA book and the Cisco CCENT\CCNA ICND2 for the second part of the certification exam.
Transcender was a waste of money in preparing for this exam. The free CD that comes with the Cisco Book has the Boson testing format and it was very helpful in taking the exam.

Don't buy the Kindle edition of the Deluxe Study Guide!! Amazon has no way to send you the bonus CD's. If you want the Virtual Lab like I did then buy the hardcover. If you don't need the bonus CD's and Virtual Lab then buy the 7th edition for $18 for Kindle.
Customer service was good and refunded my money right away but I am very disappointed in Amazon for the way they handled this product.

CCDA 640-864 Official Cert Guide (4th Edition) Review

CCDA 640-864 Official Cert Guide (4th Edition)
Average Reviews:

The dominant computer networking company is Cisco. So if you aspire to be a network manager, being certified in Cisco products can be an important qualification. To help you pass the CCDA DESGN exam, the authors of this book compiled a massive study aid.
Each chapter is prefaced by a 'Do I know this already' quiz. A few pages of multiple choice questions. None seems particularly hard or conceptually deep. This is a nice format for what is meant to be a purely functional, single purpose book. Perhaps like the venerable Schaum's Outline series, fleshed out with more narrative. I wonder why I don't see this more often. Often texts for exam preparation have quizzes at the end of chapters; not at the start.
As usual with most Cisco books, the network diagrams are well drawn and usually simple. An invaluable aid to understanding the accompanying narrative. Often, the diagrams reduce the discussion of a network topology or routing to the minimal essence in graphical form. This pictorial representation might be what really makes a lot of text coherent to the reader.
The book can serve another purpose. The grouping of information into the various chapters is a handy way to study networking. Several of the chapters, like those on Internet Protocol version 4 and version 6, can be regarded as quite generic; ie. not about Cisco products and their specific properties. Likewise with the chapter on managing security. This talks about 3rd party tools (think Nmap, Nessus and Kismet as examples) and the overall design of a network.
Don't forget the accompanying CD. While the book has those quizzes, the CD is meant as a full test run, after you have hopefully assimilated the chapters. If you are indeed preparing for the exam and have gotten this book, sittin thru the CD is vital feedback on your preparation status. If you find that you've scored too low on the CD exam, then consider postponing taking the real exam while you reread [more carefully this time!] the book. This can easily repay the cost of the book, compared to having to retake the exam.

After trying to prepare for the CCNA on my own I came to the conclusion that I needed a book if I were going to understand the material enough to receive my CCNA. Having seen Wendells books score high ratings I was going to purchase one of his until I read some of the excerpts from his book. With all due respect to Wendell his books were simply too dry for me. Then I checked out Lammle and discovered his books read as if somebody is actually talking to you, as if you're in a conversation with someone. Having purchased this book it's as immersive as reading a good story and you're learning the whole time.
Todd Lammle fully understands what Cisco expects you to know for your CCNA exam and the seller point for me is the fact that Lammle actually has a gift for teaching it. His book doesn't read as if hes just reguritating information to you but instead he writes to actually make sure you're understanding the material. (I've had professors in college teaching CCNA classes that couldn't do this. And for the record, this book is leaps and bounds better than any college class I've had on Cisco related information). Even if at some point he comes out of nowhere with new material he'll warn you about it and then he'll cover it later in depth. I have never at any point felt overwhelmed with the information in the book and he starts with the fundamentals, the building blocks of networking and goes in depth from there.
At the end of every chapter he'll have exam essays, written labs, and review questions to really make sure you understand the material (along with the CD provided). And to prove Todd wants you to know the material he even has a website you can go to and ask him questions on topics you don't fully understand, or if you feel he might be wrong about something in his book you can talk to him about it. If fact, if you check out other Lammle books on Amazon, you can see he comments on reviews left by others. That to me shows someone who's really dedicated to teaching the material and is someone I have a lot of respect for these days.
I absolutely recommend this study guide. You'll learn so much.

CCNA Security Exam Cram (Exam IINS 640-553)
Average Reviews:

I purchased this book to prepare for the CCNA Security Exam due to the ratings I saw at the Amazon store. The book is pretty concise and everything is really well explained. The only dissapointing thing is the fact that there is a chapter not fully covered in the book. That is the Securing Layer 2 devices chapter. To have a full read about that topic, I would recommend the CCNA Security Official Exam Certification Guide from Cisco written by Kevin Wallace. Anyway, the Exam Cram has result in a very good book to read for preparing the exam, which I hope pass in a few weeks.
Hope you find interesting this review.
