Cognitive Radio Technology (Communications Engineering) Review

Cognitive Radio Technology (Communications Engineering)

The meaning of "Software Defined Radio" is well established, and the technology is becoming mature. "Cognitive Radio" (CR), on the other hand has been applied to a wide range of functions and applications, some of which have little relationship to radio frequency apparatus. This book provides a comprehensive description of a wide range of topics subsumed by CR.
In his book, Bruce Fette presents articles in fourteen chapters, bookended by chapters 1 and 16 of his own, to the stage for discussion of the state of the art and look into the future. The presentations cover the technology from the high-level construct of Radio Environment Map to deep math in analyzing CR performance.
As the sections do not build on each other, the book is an excellent reference resource. It is not like a text that requires indepth understanding of early material to use later information. The extensive index facilitates finding information on specific topics.
As a long-term participant in the Software Defined Radio Forum, I say with confidence that practitioners in a broad range of communications technology will find this book an useful reference

Software Radio: A Modern Approach to Radio Engineering Review

Software Radio: A Modern Approach to Radio Engineering

This book is a one-stop source for everything you need to know about Software Radio. So, this is an excellent text-book for a 1-semester course on software radio. Some of the concepts such as analog-to-digital conversion are discussed in detail, although the relevance of a 70 page chapter on smart antennas in a Software Radio book still eludes me. A good introduction to RF implementation issues is provided. There isn't too much Math in this book, which is both good and bad. My only complaint is that there are lot of errors, both conceptual and typographical, in this book and many of these errors are not addressed in the webpage maintained by the author. Otherwise, it is a very good book.

RF and Digital Signal Processing for Software-Defined Radio: A Multi-Standard Multi-Mode Approach Review

RF and Digital Signal Processing for Software-Defined Radio: A Multi-Standard Multi-Mode Approach

Some obvious errors worry me. For instance, the equations in Section 7.3.1 (Loop Detector) are not consistent with the diagram of the system on which they are based: Figure 7.9 (the AGC Loop). One glaring problem is that a signal sample v(n) enters a delay z^-1 and comes out as a future sample v(n+1). This does not inspire confidence. Furthermore, trying to correct an author's errors while trying to learn the material is unwanted, extra and misapplied effort.

Cognitive Radio Technology, Second Edition Review

Cognitive Radio Technology, Second Edition

Two years ago I received my copy of Fette's First Edition, and wrote a review indicating that it would be a useful reference for participants in the maturing Software Defined Radio and emerging Cognitive Radio technology. As I pick up my copy of the original book, a massive number of bookmarks and plethora of underlining attest to the accuracy of that prediction. As a regular participant in the Software Defined Radio Forum's work in this area, I habitually reach for this book to understand the context of our ongoing technical work.
The Second Edition adds eight new chapters to the previous sixteen; it constrains the size of the book to an additional 206 pages by using a smaller typeface (which actually improves readability). Page composition is also improved with an appealing layout and very helpful headers: the Chapter name on the left, and section name on the facing pages.
This book is not a bedtime read; rather it is encyclopedic in its approach. Individual articles are derived from the work context of authors, who are authoritative in their own areas. Reading technical journals is made difficult (as observed by Thomas Kuhn) by the convention that the reader is fully knowledgeable about the topic under discussion. This volume takes material that would be (or already has been) published, and provides a context for it. Fette has retained his "book-end" approach, with the first and last (moved from 16th to 24th) chapters in which he explains the relevance of the material in each chapter. Then each article has introductory and conclusionary material often not included in published papers.
The new chapters address topics such as Cognitive antennas, Spectrum Sensing, Rendezvous, and Networking. They significantly increase the book's utility. In looking over the discussion of Policy-Driven CR Architecture, for example, I found myself drawn to the website of the Maude language; an excursion that provides an example of how the articles can be used as an introduction to a topic, with updates and expansions obtained by using references and browsing websites.
The classical means of making a scientific discipline clear and consistent (again according to Kuhn) is through textbooks. But the contemporary velocity of technological advancement renders that approach impractical, so this book provides timely information by not waiting for issue resolution.
There is something here for virtually everyone working in the area, from high-level overviews to mind-consuming mathematical depth. Many of our legacy information institutions are rocking from advances in (or misuse of?) Cognitive functionality (e.g. banks); this book provides valuable insight into the specific technologies that will arm us to cope with the impending information tsunami.

Cognitive Radio Communications and Networks: Principles and Practice Review

Cognitive Radio Communications and Networks: Principles and Practice

The authors of this tome have taken on the task of covering the field of cognitive radio, a complex field that spans from technical to regulatory issues that an engineer or interested party must learn in order to undertake participation in the field. The book is written in a very clear and lucid style, with a well organized layout that is conducive to flipping open the book to a section and quickly reading the definition. By way of example, if you are M-Ary PSK or Slotted Aloha or 802.22, you can quickly flip to that section and get a sufficient overview to sound intelligent in a conversation. However the book goes far deeper. Each chapter gives you depth on not just implementation, but also history of development and where things are going in the future. The book includes algorithms and problems to give a comprehensive education on the field of cognitive radio.
A brief warning--the book is not geared towards the financial person looking to learn about the field or the engineer just getting into wireless. It presumes you are an electrical engineer, with not only an understanding of wireless communication, but also an understanding of software defined radio. There are some introductory chapters, but the reader who will gain the most will be coming to this book with a strong knowledge base. Without that base, I imagine the book will still be useful, but only about 20% of it will make sense. With those thoughts in mind, I recommend the book to those looking to learn about cognitive radio, but the beginners to wireless should likely look elsewhere.

RF System Design of Transceivers for Wireless Communications Review

RF System Design of Transceivers for Wireless Communications

I came across this book after I went through a few books on RF system design. I guess I can confidently say that the book covers the most important aspects of the RF system design such as noise figure, inter-modulation and adjacent channel power ratio calculations. The cascaded system analysis (Noise figure and OIP calculations)are explained in a very straightforward and easy to follow manner. Of particular interest is the section on the architectural trade-off analysis. This section provides a very clear overview of fundamental issues that impact RF system design in most practical environments. This book has room for improvement though. In particular, the ADC noise figure analysis for the band-pass sampling (appendix 3D) does not cover the ADC non-linearity, the jitter noise and the aliasing due to sub-sampling. Moreover, most of the examples are around the mobile hand-set systems. In my opinion expanding the analysis to the base-station could benefit some readers in this area.
Reader can find himself annoyed by many typo errors in the bibliography section. I am expecting these minor issues to be resolved over the subsequent editions. Overall, I recommend this book for RF system designers who need an up-to-date encyclopedia in this area.

This book is for RF Engineers and, in particular, those engineers focusing mostly on RF systems and RFIC design. The author develops systematic methods for RF systems design, complete with a comprehensive set of design formulas. Its focus on mobile station transmitter and receiver system design also applies to transceiver design of other wireless systems such as WLAN. This comprehensive reference work covers a wide range of topics from general principles of communication theory, as it applies to digital radio designs to specific examples on implementing multimode mobile systems.
