It is an improvement on the documentation that comes from Linksys, but I was disappointed. It could have had a few more pictures, and I was expecting detailed explanations on how to configure all features of a router. When I got to the VPN portion of the book, which I was particularly interested in, it said, "See a consultant." Needless to say, that wasn't exactly what I was hoping for. But if you're just getting started, it will probably help you.

The Nexus One Pocket Guide (Peachpit Pocket Guide) Review

The Nexus One manual (pdf only) is very good as far as smart phone manuals go. Even so, The Nexus One Pocket Guide is very worthwhile. O'Grady offers lots of tips and tidbits that are not the in the manual. The Pocket guide is an enjoyable read and no matter how intuitive the Android OS is, you WILL learn things you don't know. O'Grady is a very gifted technical writer and has created a guide that does more just rehash the manual. If you recently got a Nexus One (or any Adroid phone) get this book!

Ultra-wideband Positioning Systems: Theoretical Limits, Ranging Algorithms, and Protocols Review

Ultra-wideband Positioning Systems: Theoretical Limits, Ranging Algorithms, and Protocols
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book offeres us a comprehensive introduction of UWB-aided positioning techniques including measurement, positioning, tracking, error analysis, performance bounds, ranging protocols, practical applications, up-to-date developments and future research directions. In terms of content, this book is highly recommended to electrical engineers who either need a high-level picture or in-depth understanding of the technical details. Since this book fully focuses on the positioning problem, it is able to include many discussions that have been occasionally overlooked, such as the Ziv-Zakai bound. As a preliminary knowledge of the main theme, chapter 2 and chapter 3 can also be used for general purposes to understand the basic of UWB. In addition, each chapter ends with problems, some of which are quite inspiring. Graduate students are strongly encouraged to choose their interesting problems to work on. The last chapter gives a concise survey of the recent developments and future research directions. Reading this chapter may help people, especially graduate students form their own ideas.

Position estimation of wireless devices has many applications in short-range networks. Ultra-wideband (UWB) signals provide accurate positioning capabilities that can be harnessed in wireless systems to realize these applications. This title provides detailed coverage of UWB positioning systems, offering comprehensive treatment of signal and receiver design for ranging, range estimation techniques, theoretical performance bounds, ranging algorithms and protocols. Beginning with a discussion of the potential applications of wireless positioning, and investigating UWB signals for such applications, later chapters establish a signal processing framework for analyzing UWB positioning and ranging systems. The recent IEEE 802.15.4a standard related to UWB is also studied in detail. Each chapter contains examples, problems and Matlab scripts to help readers grasp key concepts. This is an ideal text for graduate students and researchers in electrical and computer engineering, and practitioners in the communications industry, particularly those in wireless communications.

Cognitive Radio Technology (Communications Engineering) Review

Cognitive Radio Technology (Communications Engineering)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The meaning of "Software Defined Radio" is well established, and the technology is becoming mature. "Cognitive Radio" (CR), on the other hand has been applied to a wide range of functions and applications, some of which have little relationship to radio frequency apparatus. This book provides a comprehensive description of a wide range of topics subsumed by CR.
In his book, Bruce Fette presents articles in fourteen chapters, bookended by chapters 1 and 16 of his own, to the stage for discussion of the state of the art and look into the future. The presentations cover the technology from the high-level construct of Radio Environment Map to deep math in analyzing CR performance.
As the sections do not build on each other, the book is an excellent reference resource. It is not like a text that requires indepth understanding of early material to use later information. The extensive index facilitates finding information on specific topics.
As a long-term participant in the Software Defined Radio Forum, I say with confidence that practitioners in a broad range of communications technology will find this book an useful reference

Software Radio: A Modern Approach to Radio Engineering Review

Software Radio: A Modern Approach to Radio Engineering
Average Reviews:

This book is a one-stop source for everything you need to know about Software Radio. So, this is an excellent text-book for a 1-semester course on software radio. Some of the concepts such as analog-to-digital conversion are discussed in detail, although the relevance of a 70 page chapter on smart antennas in a Software Radio book still eludes me. A good introduction to RF implementation issues is provided. There isn't too much Math in this book, which is both good and bad. My only complaint is that there are lot of errors, both conceptual and typographical, in this book and many of these errors are not addressed in the webpage maintained by the author. Otherwise, it is a very good book.

iPhone for Programmers: An App-Driven Approach (Deitel Developer Series) Review

iPhone for Programmers: An App-Driven Approach (Deitel Developer Series)
Average Reviews:

What to say about Deitel books? When I was learning Java, a Deitel book teaches me how to program smoothly, and I did read all that 800 pages. After some frustrations trying to learn iPhone program, I decide to buy a book. First I bought "The iPhone Developer's Cookbook" because a friend of mine told me that this book could be perfect to start. Well, it was completely useless to me. Of course the book is not for
beginners. Then I decide to buy "Beginning iPhone Development" from Dave Mark and Jeff LaMarche. This is a great book, but I couldn't fix the ideas on my mind. I think it is very difficult, especially because I've never saw a Mac before. Although I am a Senior Java Developer, I've never heard about Objective-C or Mac programming before. So, again, the book is great but not for me. Then I bought two more books from Apress: "iPhone Cool Projects" and "iPhone Game Projects". Again, more frustration. I was thinking either I'm so dumb to learn this or I'm not able to do self-study. In a sunny morning I was searching for some news at Amazon and I saw that Deitel was written a new book of how to program in iPhone. I thought maybe was not a good idea to buy another book, since I couldn't learn from the four previous books I had. Thinking in how easy I learned Java from Deitel series, I decided to bet again. I can't describe how amazing this book is. It's very easy. It comes from the real beginning. At first, no delegates, no properties, no memory management. It teaches you using very easy and useful examples. The method is also pretty good. The book introduces you with the example, which works by the way, and after you see what it is then you move to development part. It's very motivational. The codes are clear and well commented. The examples are real, viable, specially the games, and you end each chapter with more hope to become a real iPhone Developer. Congratulations, Deitel. You did it again.
