First off, if you're planning to use this as a primary reference for your A+ exam...DON'T. There are errors in the material. Second, if you're one of those who is able to memorize questions and answers and recall them at will, this book won't help you at all, because the CompTIA exam questions are NOT those in this book. Having said that, if you pair it up with a Meyers or Lammle text and use it for review, it will do its job, which is to prepare you for the actual CompTIA examinations. Yes, I know, the Meyers and Lammle books have their own practice tests included on their CDROMs. If you're at all uncertain about how well you've studied, pay the extra money and buy this book, and take the practice tests it provides.
As to the actual practice tests, both those on the included CDROM and from the authors' Web site, you may find them more difficult than the actual CompTIA exams. This is a good thing, because if you are able to pass the practice tests, you're likely to score well on the CompTIA exams. An example? I squeaked out a 76% on the two Practical Applications practice tests from the book and Web site, and then after studying the suggested "weak" areas, scored 850 on the CompTIA exam.
In short, if you're not comfortable with your knowledge and abilities, pick this up and try the tests to see where you need to build yourself up. If you ARE, pick it up anyway and see if you know what you think you know.

Mike Meyers' CompTIA A+ Guide: Essentials, Third Edition (Exam 220-701) (Mike Meyers' Computer Skills) Review

I hope that Amazon or Mr. Meyers will edit the description of this book. There are "End of Chapter Quizzes." However, there are no End of Chapter ANSWERS. If you go to [...] looking for the answers you'll be redirected to a McGraw Hill site where you'll need to input your "Sales Rep???" I don't have a sales rep. I bought this book on Amazon.com. If you're a self-directed learner choose SYBEX because questions with no answers is like a car with no brakes.

I literally keep this on my desk at all times. Since I had a good foundation of computer hardware and software knowledge I didn't need to read page for page, but I study up on issues I run into from time to time. I can see this being a great book to help people new into the IT world and computing. The CD has great resources to assist anyone who is planning to take the A+ Certification! Good job!!

CompTIA A+ Cert Guide (220-701 and 220-702) (2nd Edition) Review

CompTIA A+ Cert Guide (220-701 and 220-702) (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

I have been reading books authored and co-authored by Scott Mueller since 1998. I have sworn by his Upgrading and Repairing PCs books (now in its 19th Edition with over two million copies sold from the book series) for my own use and for the use of my students in the classes that I teach. I always tell them "if you are going to buy any additional companion book for this A+ certification class, be it for studying for the exam itself or for your reference down the road, get a book written by Scott Mueller - he is THE subject matter expert for all things relating to computer hardware."
Having a CompTIA A+ certification guide written by this master is the best of both worlds - you have a comprehensive study guide for the certification exams as well as a solid reference book for future use.
The publishers found the only way I could think of to up this ante by combining the talent from two additional experts in the field - Mark Edward Soper and David L. Prowse - to make this book a great pick to anyone that is looking to learn more about computer hardware and / or take the CompTIA certification exam for the 220-701 and 220-702 series exams.
The book covers all the topics in the 220-701 and 220-702 series exams which has been updated to include information on the Windows 7 operating system from Microsoft.
The 18 chapters of the book are succinctly broken down by topic and subject matter.
The chapters include a study feature that I have often recommended to my students. There is a pre-assessment quiz at the beginning of the chapter that allows you to gauge your knowledge of the material being covered in the chapter. If you take the pre-assessment quiz and are able to get a very high score you discover that you already have most of the in-depth knowledge for the subject matter of that chapter. That would allow you to safely gloss over the information in quick review fashion. If you were unable to score very well this would allow you to understand that full study of the material in that chapter would be needed in order to better understand the material. This approach benefits the up and coming student as it allows them to focus on areas with additional study time where they are weak with respect to the material which is a huge time saver. Time is also saved by underscoring the limited need to "cram" an area where they are already proficient.
The DVD that accompanies the book includes 2 complete practice exams that can be executed in different testing modes (study mode and practice exam mode) as well as e-book pages for the glossary and appendixes from the main guide.
The CompTIA A+ Cert Guide (220-701 and 220-702) (2nd Edition) is a "must have" for anyone starting out on a new IT career and / or for anyone that has a need for a solid reference and resource guide for computer hardware.

I had received the CompTIA A+ Complete Study Guide for xmas because the All-in-One Exam Guide wasn't available yet. Well, I gave up on the Complete Study Guide after I was 1/3 the way through and ordered Meyer's version as I saw that it had become available on Amazon. What can I say? The guy is such a great teacher and the book is very well laid out and easy to understand, relying on plenty of analogies and diagrams. You get the feeling that you are in a classroom listening to your favorite teacher; Mikes methods of teaching are pleasantly informal, and he seems to have the formula for mixing professionalism and humor down to a tee.
