First off, if you're planning to use this as a primary reference for your A+ exam...DON'T. There are errors in the material. Second, if you're one of those who is able to memorize questions and answers and recall them at will, this book won't help you at all, because the CompTIA exam questions are NOT those in this book. Having said that, if you pair it up with a Meyers or Lammle text and use it for review, it will do its job, which is to prepare you for the actual CompTIA examinations. Yes, I know, the Meyers and Lammle books have their own practice tests included on their CDROMs. If you're at all uncertain about how well you've studied, pay the extra money and buy this book, and take the practice tests it provides.
As to the actual practice tests, both those on the included CDROM and from the authors' Web site, you may find them more difficult than the actual CompTIA exams. This is a good thing, because if you are able to pass the practice tests, you're likely to score well on the CompTIA exams. An example? I squeaked out a 76% on the two Practical Applications practice tests from the book and Web site, and then after studying the suggested "weak" areas, scored 850 on the CompTIA exam.
In short, if you're not comfortable with your knowledge and abilities, pick this up and try the tests to see where you need to build yourself up. If you ARE, pick it up anyway and see if you know what you think you know.

Security Administrator Street Smarts: A Real World Guide to CompTIA Security+ Skills Review

Security Administrator Street Smarts: A Real World Guide to CompTIA Security+ Skills
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not an Exam Cram type of book, this book is aimed at giving newcomers to the security field a solid background and understanding of what the job entails. Only incidentally does this book follow the CompTIA Security+ certificate examination (Exam #SY0-101) recommendations and thus provide a dual purpose.
The book is organized into tenphases or major sections. Each phase then has a series of Tasks to be performed. The first phase is entitled 'The Grunt Work of Security.' In it you start by making a security assessment of your network. By phase 10 you have completed hardening, securing the storage, set up user accounts, protected against virus and other malware attacks and more. In phase 10 you study troubleshooting.
I found the book to be easy reading, and the phase/task approach worked well for me. It provides a well needed break in the reading. And let's face it, reading about security is a lot less exciting than reading about Harry Potter.

Walks you through a variety of common tasks, demonstrating step by step how to perform them and how to circumvent roadblocks you may encounter

A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC, Comprehensive Review

A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC, Comprehensive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I, like so many others, was required to have this book for two of my classes. While it is a very informative, useful book, it is not very well-organized and is very boring. The videos on the CD that comes with it is very helpful to understand a lot of the hands-on stuff. Many of the "Reviewing the Basics" questions at the end of the chapter cover a lot of pointless things that are not necessary to know, and there are always anywhere from 1 - 5 questions that I just absolutely cannot find the answers to. There have also been many things that a few of my PC tech teachers have found in the book that they would like to debate with the author about. Overall, it's still a good book, but you need a LOT of time and a LOT of patience, and you can't be the type that gets bored too easily with reading, to be able to successfully read this book. The only exception to these rules is if you are required by your teacher to have this book for class. :P

I read this book and the CompTIA Security+ Deluxe Study Guide: SY0-201 book and passed the exam on my first try! After only 2 weeks of preparation I passed the exam on my first attempt with a score of 855 out of 900.
Make sure you can pass all the chapter review questions and bonus exams on the CD with 90% or higher and you will most likely pass the real exam.
I definitely recommend buying this book and the CompTIA Security+ Deluxe Study Guide: SY0-201 book!

I hope that Amazon or Mr. Meyers will edit the description of this book. There are "End of Chapter Quizzes." However, there are no End of Chapter ANSWERS. If you go to [...] looking for the answers you'll be redirected to a McGraw Hill site where you'll need to input your "Sales Rep???" I don't have a sales rep. I bought this book on Amazon.com. If you're a self-directed learner choose SYBEX because questions with no answers is like a car with no brakes.

CISSP: Certified Information Systems Security Professional Study Guide Review

CISSP: Certified Information Systems Security Professional Study Guide
Average Reviews:

I must admit a soft spot for Sybex (and Ed Tittel) study guides, having used them extensively for Microsoft exams. This book follows in that tradition, providing a good balance between detailed explanation and comprehensive coverage of the exam topics.
The bundled CD is useful. I raced through the 250 flash cards in an hour, which is good for jogging the memory. The four bonus exams, of 75 questions each, are good, but are not as difficult as the real thing. These exams provide grades broken down by each CISSP exam domain, which is excellent for identifying topics for revision.
One book can not guarantee coverage of all CISSP exam topics, particularly given the long list of references on the CISSP suggested reading list. I also skimmed through a friend's copy of Shon Harris's "All-in-One" exam guide. I would still rate this book higher, but Harris's book covers some topics in more detail then the Sybex book. The "All-in-One" practice exams are more difficult, though some of the questions are not clearly worded.
The biggest disappoint I have with the exam preparation experience is with the CISSP's ten domains. The examination questions are based on 'good exam fodder' from topics in the ten domains. The topics lean towards an academic approach to security, rather then knowledge needed by a working security professional.
The other references I would strongly suggest to help to gain a security brain, as well as a high exam score include: Stephen Northcutt's `Inside Network Perimeter Security', Ross Anderson's `Security Engineering', and Syngress's `Special Ops'. Maybe I should take one of the SANS security exams, which are much more practical in nature.
And best of luck with the exam!

CompTIA A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, Sixth Edition

I spent over a week agonizing over which book to purchase to prepare for the A+ exam. I ended up choosing this because it seemed to me to be the most material for the money and because Meyers, the author, has a reputation for quality in the industry. After working through the book, I am fully satisfied, and passed the exam on the first try. This guide is extremely comprehensive, and laid out in a very logical and easy-to-use way. Meyers' writing style is very easy to read and engaging. Even dry subjects are quite readable. The included materials are also quite good, but I should mention a few caveats. The book advertises 8 practice exams, but that means two for each of the four tests. Because any one person will only take two tests (Essentials and one elective), there really are only four practice tests (however, there is so much overlap, I found taking all the tests to be helpful). Also, each practice test is only 50 questions, but the real test is 100, so each is only half a test. On the other hand, the practice tests are very accurate and the interface is just like what you'll face on test day. Also, if you purchase your exam vouchers from Meyers' website, you will not only save $30 on each test, but also get an additional two practice tests (100 questions) for each exam. Overall, I definitely recommend this book over any other you might be considering, and I plan to purchase the accompanying Network+ book to study for that test.

With all the hype I've read about Mike Meyers' books, I thought this one was going to be a good one to help me study for the SY0-201 exam. With all the study material I got (three other books besides this one from Sybex, Syngress, and McGraw Hill), this was the least helpful. It's easy to read, but it's very redundant. I don't need to be told that all software should be running the latest security patches and updates 10 times before I turn the page. I need something a little more than that to help me pass the test. If you're going to use this book to help you study, I recommend getting another book or even a brain dump to cover everything this book doesn't.

Before I purchased this book I was studying CompTIA Security+ All-in-One Exam Guide, CompTIA Security+ Deluxe Study Guide: SY0-201 and VTC ( online tutorials ). While I passed all of the book exams with 90 % + I still failed CompTIA's Security + practice test. The questions on CompTia's practice test were nothing like the test questions in these books. The best I got was a 75%.
As soon I received this book, Exam Cram, I took a week and studied with it. I took the CompTia practice exam and scored 88%. I feel that this book made a big difference.
I took the Security + exam today and passed with an 832 out of 900 on the first try ( 750 was passing). I feel that I would have not passed this test without studying this book.
The actual CompTIA Security + test was similar to the questions in this book. In my opinion the CompTIA test was written by someone with a poor grasp on the english language as it was very misleading. The sentence structure was so bad I thought I failed. To pass this test, understand the concepts as it really tests your knowledge in application not technical.
This is my first CompTIA test.

The book is built on a clean language, the ideas are well organized inside each chapter, but you could perceive that chapters themselves are not in the optimal order...Sometimes you have to jump from one chapter to another to cover completely an idea exposed in this book.
On the other hand, you will have to buy additional simulations and practice questions to complete your preparation, because this book does not offer you practice questions with the appropiate level of complexity compared to the real exam.

CompTIA Network+ Certification Study Guide, Fourth Edition (Certification Press)

While this is an informative book, especially concerning Microsoft networking utilities and features, there were definitely some areas on the Network+ 2009 N10-004 test (just took it today, and passed, but not as well as I would have liked) that were not well covered in this book. The areas that could definitely use more attention were CIDR-based sub-netting and physical facility equipment and tools. There was a lot of emphasis on troubleshooting scenarios as well. While the book (content/quizzes/test) focuses many questions around Microsoft tools/utilities, I experienced next to no Microsoft-centric questions on the actual test. (The test is actually very vendor neutral)
I realize it is not easy to create a test prep book like this, and I appreciate authors like Glen providing these resources. But at the same time, it is hard for any book to provide all possible knowledge needed for a test like this.

This book is very readable. The author's personal touch makes it more enjoyable. This makes going through a dry subject easier. A special strength for this book is when it deals with subnetting in much detail. There is one chapter and an appendix on this subject.
The annoying part is all the typos, misstatements, and wrong answers. The text has a few wrong answers, but the practice exams and flashcards on the CD have numerous wrong answers (about 13) along with all the typos. The book and accompanying materials should have been proof-read before being published. Because of this, I would rate this book below average. The cool thing about all this is that the majority of the text material taught me what was wrong in those conflicting areas. I'd prefer a guide book that's more reliable, though.

CompTIA Security+ SYO-201 Cert Guide
Average Reviews:

This is a review for the CompTIA Security+ Cert Guide.
I am a trainer/course developer for a technical school and am in charge of developing a new Security+ course to begin in 2011. I reviewed this and several other books (along with other study materials) to use in the course.
This is a very nicely laid out book. The organization is exactly what I need to base my course around. The book starts small with basic subjects, and progressively builds on them.
Doesn't waste time, gets to the core of Security+ objectives quickly. But, there are also real-word examples, plus hands-on labs and videos. There are lots of questions which are an excellent prep for the actual CompTIA Security+ test. Two practice exams are at the end of the book, with a third on the disc. The disc also has videos that compliment the hands-on labs. Great glossary and index. Plus there are extras for instructors like me that can be downloaded for free. This book made it very easy for me to design my course, whereas I was struggling with other books, trying to match them up to our schedule and timeframe.
I always recommend a second (and perhaps even a third) test preparation source. It's always good to get two viewpoints when studying for an exam.
Accordingly, I plan to use this book along with the Security+ Exam Cram for the course. I use Mr. Prowse's materials for the A+ course as well, and Mr. Harwood's guides for the Net+. They all work very well together, and allow for the student to progress quickly from course to course.
While I am using this book for a technical class, it would work very well for the person who is studying on their own also. I highly recommend it.

CompTIA Network+ (N10-004) Cert Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Anytime a certification candidate decides that a book needs to be purchased, the candidate is usually overwhelmed by the number of titles available for studying for the exam. Choosing the right book can make the difference between passing and failing.
With that said, I have had a lot of experience in studying for certification exams, including exams from CompTIA, Microsoft, and Cisco. I have used many books over the past decade or so, and I can honestly say that I think Pearson got it right here.
This book does a good job of covering the content you need to understand to pass the exam. I know...because I have taken and passed the exam. I know how the questions are worded and understand the logic that CompTIA uses for their exam. It helps that I am also a practice test developer for Transcender.
With that said, I love the fact that Mike Harwood does not go into depth when it is not needed for the exam. I remember several years ago, I used a book to study for the old version of the Network+ exam, and I spent time learning about how the Internet was founded (and, no, the book did not mention Al Gore). When I finally took the exam, I realized that all that information was not needed to pass the exam. I was so frustrated!
But this book gets to the nuts and bolts of the Network+ exam. I particularly love a few things about this book:
1. When discussing similar technologies, the author provides comparison type material, such as advantages/disadvantages. Often understanding the subtle differences is the key to answering the questions on the live exam.
2. There are LOTS of pictures, screen shots, and diagrams. This will really help when you see similar pictures and diagrams on the live exam. (And make sure you can identify the different kind of cables, connectors, and so on. This is vital for the Network+ exam.)
3. I love the use of tables and bullet points for review purposes. These are easy to find and can be reviewed right before you walk into the test center.
4. The wireless networking chapter is particularly helpful. While this technology is not new, it is relatively new to the CompTIA certification world. The wireless obstruction table on page 265 was particularly helpful!
5. The Troubleshooting Procedures and Best Practices chapter was arranged in a manner that is easily understood. I have been involved in the development of study guides. Often, the troubleshooting section is the hardest to write because problems can be caused by so many factors.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone preparing for the Network+ exam. It is also a great general reference for those who are just starting in the computer networking industry.
