Discovering Computers 2009: Complete (Shelly Cashman) Review

Discovering Computers 2009: Complete (Shelly Cashman)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the first review I've written on Amazon, or anywhere else for that matter, but Discovering Computers 2009 Complete is so unbelievably bad that I had to say something, hopefully helping some poor soul from using this so-called text as a source of information. I am using this as a textbook in a required course in a community college, and am only through chapter 5 so it is possible that all of the inaccuracies and just plain wrong information will suddenly no longer be manifest in later chapters, but I'm not counting on it.
I have been a PC user since the original IBM PC, and have delved into much of the technology involved over the years, so I am at the very least familiar with most of the subject matter. I don't claim to be an expert by any stretch, but I do have my strengths and it is this prior familiarity that permits me to evaluate the text's accuracy. Also consider that this is a book that is supposed to teach those with little or no experience with computers beyond perhaps some very basics, so misleading or unclear statements can be just as damaging to such readers as the outright incorrect statements.
OK, I just opened to a page... this one's not a biggie, but I'll start here. "Today, AMD is the leading manufacturer of Intel-compatible processors, which have an internal design similar to Intel processors..." I think that Intel would like to know about that! The architecture is not similar at all, and remember that we are talking about a college level text here. The very next paragraph: "Originally, Apple computers used only an IBM processor or a Motorola processor..." No, originally Apple used a MOS Technology 6502 processor; the Mac used Motorola and then IBM processors. Nothing critical here, so I'll move on.
At the end of chapter 4: The Components of the System Unit is a page entitled Keeping Your Computer Clean, in which the book suggests using "small attachments on your house vacuum" on the "wires, chips, adapter cards, and fan blades."!!! Even if the user is wearing an antistatic wristband -which the text recommends but makes no mention of how to ground- a house vacuum should NEVER be used on such electronically sensitive parts, as the static electricity generated by the dust flowing through the tube will very efficiently zap those chips and adapter cards. Additionally, they instruct the user to unplug the computer from everything, not necessarily a bad thing, but make no mention of grounding the case or at the very least placing it on a grounded anti-static mat. BAD BAD BAD!
Under the topic of Digital Cameras, a sidebar states that a "digital zoom digitally alters the pixels at the center of the CCD..." If it had said that it only uses the pixel data from the central areas of the CCD it would have been somewhat better, but as it stands the reader is led to believe that the CCD is somehow altered. The text attempts to explain image resolution and pixel density, delving into ppi(pixels per inch), which should almost never be mentioned in the same sentence as image resolution and pixel density. Again from the text: "For example, a 2304x1728 (pronounced 2304 by 1728) ppi camera has 2,304 pixels per vertical inch and 1,728 pixels per horizontal inch." This is just plain wrong in both a fundamental and conceptual way, and exemplifies how the entire book seems to have been authored by someone who does not understand much of the subject matter, and has simply performed a few Internet searches on the topic and then cut-and-pasted his way into a text. If you do not understand why the above sentence is wrong then how would you know it was when you read it in the text. It is not a particularly difficult concept but is misunderstood by the general public (Pixel density, ppi, dpi, etc.).
I have other studying to do, or I could spend the rest of the semester picking this waste of a tree apart. If you have any choice in the matter of selecting a book with which to learn about computers and the technology, please please please do not buy this one. I have nothing to gain what so ever by trashing this one, but I can tell you that it is very aggravating to have to memorize 'facts' that I know without question are wrong, simply to pass an exam.
Speaking of exams, you should see (not!) some of the 'edutainment' the publisher has on the associated 'learning' Web site; neither 'edu' nor 'taining'. I will say this though: I did learn to capitalize Web and Internet.

A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC, Comprehensive Review

A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC, Comprehensive
Average Reviews:

I, like so many others, was required to have this book for two of my classes. While it is a very informative, useful book, it is not very well-organized and is very boring. The videos on the CD that comes with it is very helpful to understand a lot of the hands-on stuff. Many of the "Reviewing the Basics" questions at the end of the chapter cover a lot of pointless things that are not necessary to know, and there are always anywhere from 1 - 5 questions that I just absolutely cannot find the answers to. There have also been many things that a few of my PC tech teachers have found in the book that they would like to debate with the author about. Overall, it's still a good book, but you need a LOT of time and a LOT of patience, and you can't be the type that gets bored too easily with reading, to be able to successfully read this book. The only exception to these rules is if you are required by your teacher to have this book for class. :P

Lifespan Development Review

Lifespan Development

I have taught (and taken) courses in Child Development and Lifespan Development with numerous textbooks, and this was definitely my favorite. The text is exceptionally thorough and includes a balance of theory and application. Relevant research is discussed throughout, in a way that is interesting and engaging and emphasizes the importance of scientific rigor in studying development. Most of all I appreciate the personal, direct voice of the text, as if I am listening to the author talk. Some other texts actually make reading about lifespan development boring (hard to do but can be done!) This one very effectively illuminates how fascinating it can be. My only criticism might be that I found it very difficult to cover the entire text in a one semester class, precisely because it is so rich in information.

CISSP Guide to Security Essentials Review

CISSP Guide to Security Essentials
Average Reviews:

Peter Gregory is a prolific author and well-known computer security professional who is also very active in the information security community. Peter wrote this book to address the current situation in information security, which is stated in the Introduction, as "There aren't enough good security professionals to go around". Information security is a broad field with many sub disciplines. Many professionals feel they should know more about security, but don't know where to start. Peter's book is an attempt to change that situation by providing the foundational materials that every security professional needs to know before undertaking advanced or specialized study. The book is suitable for self-study or as a classroom text. Each chapter has a summary, a glossary of key terms, review questions, hands-on projects, and ideas for case projects. For those interested in obtaining the CISSP, they will find this book a good place to start. The strength of this book lies in its organization and clarity. The book's ten chapters map to the ten CISSP Common Body of Knowledge Domains. Each chapter is broken into many subheadings, with an outline-style organization that clarifies each distinct topic. Acronyms are defined in the text and in the glossaries, which are presented in each chapter and at the end of the book. There are two appendices. One appendix provides summary outlines of the ten domains of CISSP security; the other reproduces the code of ethics of CISSP professionals. The Introduction reviews the steps needed to obtain CISSP certification and, together with the code of ethics, gives a good sense of the knowledge, behavior, and attitude necessary to succeed as a security professional. A CD-ROM containing practice questions for the CISSP exam is included. No single book can provide all you need to know to be a CISSP, but this is a good place to start.

Information Technology for Managers Review

I just started using this book for an Information Systems class for my MBA. It was a required text so I did not choose it. It is lightweight and small and the chapters aren't too long, so it seems like a good book for managers to use to learn about Information Technology. The technology being discussed may change but the principles of how to manage technology are constant.

I am an MCSE NT4 that has had a 4 1/2 year hiatus from IT work. My first read through an A+ book was in 1998 which was comparatively a bland textbook read. Myers has done a nice job with this book, even entertaining on occasion. I am quickly getting caught up on areas I missed. It is very unfortunate the CompTIA group can't seem to connect with Microsoft on their timing of OS releases. It would be nice to have Windows 7 addressed in this book.

Principles of Information Systems Review

Principles of Information Systems
Average Reviews:

One of the book's biggest problems is that it rambles. The book has 14 multi-topic-chapters. This could be solved with going to 20 or 24 focused chapters. Part of the problem is the book's target audience - accounting, business or management majors that should know what IT can do for them. I have over 25 years in business and over 10 years in IT, dealing with Fortune 100 companies to mom and pop shops. When I read this book, I get they impression they talked to one person or one company and they take that as industry standards. Oops these generalizations miss the mark. If they talk to only one company they should say so- this is the way XYZ does this. If you have a 42 page chapter called "Database Systems and Business Intelligence" the business intelligence (BI) section should be longer than a 1/2 page. I have thought this book wouldn't be a good value at half the price.

My roommate used this book in her class and asked if I wanted it when I take the class. I looked it over and I am sure it's fine for some, but if you managed to turn your computer on, find the Internet, find amazon, and search for these reviews, then you no longer need this book. I wasn't impressed that the author rated his own book, but at least he gave it 5 stars. I would hate to think of an author giving less than that to his own book.

Microwave and Rf Design: A Systems Approach Review

Microwave and Rf Design: A Systems Approach
Average Reviews:

"Microwave and RF Design" fills a much needed void in describing the basic principles of RF engineering and application. Included are many examples clarifying techniques that one uses in making practical RF design decisions. Whether one is a seasoned engineer in need of a review or an aspiring student, "Microwave and RF Design" promises to provide the reader with the knowledge and confidence necessary to tackle many of the problems seen in today's world.

Plain and simple, this book is the result of years of work, including the publication of a beta version so we could make sure the final product is the very best textbook available. Just as an example, the beta version was 670 pages, and comments from reviewers like you have resulted in a 1,000 page powerhouse. Written by Michael Steer, Lampe Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina State University, the independent modules in this book can be employed for a single course, or the same textbook can carry the student and instructor through multiple courses in microwave and radio frequency design. This book is a comprehensive introduction to RF and microwave design with a systems first approach. However, this does not mean that components are ignored. The book is arranged in five modules (see the TOC) that are independent but do build on each other and are best taught in sequence. Design examples are used throughout the book, and many of them incorporate design tradeoffs that are only appreciated in the context of a specific design. The book is also characterized by design emphasis with discussion of manufacturability and practical design decisions. Modern treatment - This treatment of radio frequency and microwave engineering provides the tools for engineers to work with modern radio, radar and sensor systems. Advanced components and design techniques are presented, along with a thoroughly modern treatment of traditional microwave theory and techniques. Well rounded radio frequency and microwave engineer - Learning RF and microwave engineering through this book prepares the student and practicing engineer with the skills to engage RF and microwave engineering in the context of the larger system. The engineer will be able to engage in the important tradeoffs between microwave, analog, RF, digital and algorithmic design. Valuable resource - This book is a valuable resource for the practicing engineer with in-depth analysis of modern microwave components and subsystems. The practicing engineer will be able to develop and refine the techniques required to achieve competitive designs.

Introduction to Information Systems: Supporting and Transforming Business Review

Introduction to Information Systems: Supporting and Transforming Business

The book was purchased in conjunction with taking a college business course. The book is excellent for this purpose and for those wishing to study the topic but it is not a casual read. It is strong on information and communications technology in business that support the enormous changes in this area over the past few decades. It is not so strong on database and other program usage, etc., and I found recommended supplemental readings (from articles older than the date of publication of the book) helpful in studying this area so it is perhaps better as part of an organized course than for self-study.
