CompTIA Security+ Review Guide, Includes CD: Exam SY0-301 Review

CompTIA Security+ Review Guide, Includes CD: Exam SY0-301
Average Reviews:

Update 9/12/2011: I passed the exam today; 833/900. Not stellar but OK. There were questions on the exam that were not found in any of the three books I used. Many questions were poorly worded or didn't contain enough information to properly answer the question. I found that to be true with both A+ and Net+. Aside from that, I still found this book to be excellent. Use it along with the Mike Meyers Passport book and use it for cross referencing. Unlike A+ or Net+, the Sec+ exam is pure memorization with little problem solving. Skip the monstrous Sybex book. It has way too much information not pertinent to the exam. This book is right on target but contains some errors that you will want to cross-reference with the Passport book.
--------------------
I haven't taken the test yet but I thought I might review this book before and after the test. As best that I can tell, there are only three SY0-301 books available right now and I think I have all three: The Sybex book by Emmett Dulaney which I don't like, the Mike Meyers Passport book (really written by T. J. Samuell), which I like, and this one. What I really like about this book is that it follows the Security+ objectives exactly. The other books you would literally have to cut apart and rearrange them to get them in the order of the objectives. However, I guess the reasoning behind that is that if you follow the objectives exactly, there are topics (SQL injection for example) that aren't fully defined until later in the objectives. Before you start studying, go to CompTIA website and print out the objectives. You will find a lot of repetition in the objectives, which probably is why the other two books are so out of order. However, this book ignores that, and does repeat itself, which is good. I would not use this book alone to study. I decided to take a two book approach (as I have always done for A+ and Network+) using the Passport book as a first read and now this book to type up my note sheet, following the objectives in order. That way if you see a topic that hasn't been defined yet in this book, you will know what it is already from the Passport book. I haven't looked at the chapter review questions yet or the CD so I can't comment on those. The CD's are usually a disappointment anyway and nothing like the real exam. I like to do those after I have completed and studied my note sheet.
Pros: Follow objectives exactly. "Understand" sections give a concise one or two sentence definition review that is useful for note sheets. Most topics are clear and concise without extraneous information. Excellent diagrams.
Cons: Some topics are a bit confusing or not developed enough. Use a two-book approach.
Definitely worth your money.

One of the first books I purchased on my new Kindle. Amazon's documentation was quite weak With this guide, I was able to find many hidden features which helped me enjoy my e-reader much more. Loading pictures, music and posting excerpts of books on Facebook. Only four stars because it would benefit from some how-to diagrams.

Even Steve Jobs didn't know what he had on his hands when he announced the original iPhone as a combination of a mere "three revolutionary products"--an iPod, a cell phone, and a keyboard-less handheld computer. Once Apple introduced the App Store and opened it up to outside developers, however, the iPhone became capable of serving a rapidly growing number of functions--now more than 350,000 and counting.

Managing Service Level Quality: Across Wireless and Fixed Networks Review

Managing Service Level Quality: Across Wireless and Fixed Networks

Tomi Ahnonen provides an excellent collection of thoughts and ideas to monetize 3G. Even though the telecom industry is struggling, 3G is going to happen. This is a must read for the planners at wireless carriers to chart out a plan for rolling out 3G services. Application developers will have a better appreciation of the value chain and how they fit in to the bigger picture. Coverage of topics is pretty good as well. I hope author maintains a website to update information in the book as things are bound to change and new strategies likely to emerge. In anycase, if you are someone who has anything to do with 3G, I would recommend the book. Thanks.

QoS (Quality of Service) and Network Management are old topics. However, the fusion of IP style multimedia and wireless networks (3G) means that network managers who might previously have dealt with one or the other, must now manage and provide service guarantees for the both. This is where Managing Service Level Quality across Wireless and Fixed Networks steps in...It begins by examining the mechanisms that already existed in fixed IP data networks prior to the introduction of probe and agent technology. A look at these later developments is then supplemented with a real-world scenario of how real time application performance monitoring can not only provide service level management but can also aid in root cause analysis. This same model is then applied to a wireless environment examining which elements are required to be able to deliver multimedia services across 2nd and 3rd generation mobile networks, detailing the components of data networking that will assist in guaranteeing service level performance and the constraints placed on those guarantees when passing services over an air interface to a wireless-enabled device. It asks a simple question: will multimedia applications and the guaranteed levels of service required by them work when traversing from fixed to wireless networks? It tracks QoS components and mechanisms of both environments and looks at what will provide the glue in this brave new converged world and also provides empirical data to back up the conclusions drawn.* First book available which applies QoS techniques and technologies to wireless/mobile networks 3G/UMTS* Deals with the search for the real time information that constitutes the "customer experience" in terms of application performance so that service levels can be verified against measurable and relevant data in a true end-to-end manner across both fixed and wireless networks* Presents probe and agent technology* Features a real-world scenario of how real time application performance monitoring can not only provide service level management but can also aid in root cause analysis - this will be of particular interest to practitioner* Analyses which elements are required in order to deliver multimedia services across 2nd and 3rd generation mobile networks* Details the components of data networking that will assist in guaranteeing service level performanceEssential reading for Wireless and IP data network professionals/practitioners, network managers and architects, technical consultants, quality assessment engineers, infrastructure vendors, application developers, portal designers, wireline operators, lecturers, postgraduates, senior undergraduate students and industry trainees.

GPRS and 3G Wireless Applications: Professional Developer's Guide Review

GPRS and 3G Wireless Applications: Professional Developer's Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Generally a good overview of technologies available to wireless developers today, including WAP, Bluetooth, GPRS and 3G. As other reviewers have stated, the scope of the book is rather broad, so there is surface coverage of lots of issues.
However, there is a hidden gem in this book, Chapter 8. This chapter delves into the theory of wireless application development and presents some good foundational strategy for dealing with packet loss, discontinuous service, security holes, and so on. It also provides a good overview of the proper use of caching, compression, and reducing overhead. There is a discussion on the right way to keep the user engaged through a difficult airlink connection, and that's information which is usually ignored in most texts.
Add it to your library!

To ensure competitive advantage for their companies in wireless product development, developers need to understand how wireless technologies work, what impact they have on applications being developed, and how to use them to optimize products for success in the marketplace. Designed to answer these and other wireless development questions, this unique handbook explores how a host of relevant technologies work together with the new worldwide standards for wireless technologies--General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Third Generation (3G). Leading expert Christoffer Andersson clearly explains how GPRS and 3G control the mobile environment, then goes on to describe how the emerging radio technology of Bluetooth fits in with WAP and Java, how wireless applications work with HTTP and TCP/IP on the Internet, and how to create "always-on" wireless applications.

Advanced Wireless Networks: 4G Technologies Review

Advanced Wireless Networks: 4G Technologies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What comes after 3G? Given that many telecoms are still struggling to deploy some version of 3G, Glisic offers a longer termed perspective.
Mobility is a key idea; since we are talking about wireless networks after all. There is an extrapolation from current cellphone usage. In one direction, it is to smaller length scales. So that you might have a personal area network of a few meters range, within which might be devices accessible in a wireless manner by your phone. Another idea is that the phone can be used across more regions. With seamless hand off between different providers. Of course, there remains an immense amount of behind the scenes details to be resolved amongst these providers. Not all of these are technological. Crucial issues involved a viable business model for them to rationally offer these fancy new services. (Whatever those might all turn out to be.)
Readers interested in Glisic's account might also want to venture into a related book on the same subject, 4G Roadmap and Emerging Communication Technologies (Universal Personal Communications). Both authors offer considerable overlap in their discussions.

Average Reviews:

Complaints or concerns against the 802.11 family of networking standards can usually be broken down to quality of service (QoS), security and range of service and bandwidth. The authors of this great book tackle these subjects head on and show you how this is not the case and how they can be over come. In this book, each is highlighted independently (after a good overview of 802.11) and the information presented there is wonderful. They wrap everything up with some real life scenarios that are also worth a detailed read. If you are in the business of setting up WLANs in a corporate environment, then you will want this book to occupy a place on your reference shelf. But more importantly, if you are on the technical sales side of the house, this book could be a real life saver and deal closer for you. Highly recommended!
