Principles of Digital Communication Review

Principles of Digital Communication
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is, perhaps, the most "intuitive" textbook in communications engineering in recent memory. While the emphasis of this text is on theory, Gallager does a fantastic job in connecting the mathematics to engineering. While the target audience of the text is Graduate students, anyone with a decent background in real analysis or linear algebra will be able to get a lot of mileage out of Gallager's approach, which is to start with "toy models", i.e. simple models, and then modify these models accordingly for different environments (i.e. Wireless).
While the book surveys various aspects of communications engineering, such as information theory and wireless communications, the true "meat" of the book lies in its presentation of the most fundamental aspects of communications theory. Notably, this book, like Wozencraft's and Jacob's Principles of Communication Engineering, presents the signal space approach (using L2 orthonormal expansions to represent waveforms and noise) to a in a very clear manner. Most communications engineering books these days seem to (incorrectly) teach students (including myself as an undergraduate) to reason about problems in communications theory primarily in terms of cosines and sines. This text, however makes it clear that most problems in communications theory can be explained in terms of the signal space viewpoint.
There probably isn't a single word, phrase, or mathematical expression that is not needed in this text. As another reviewer mentioned, readers have the benefit of being able to watch Gallager's online lectures, which complement this text, via MIT Open Courseware. Even if you have not studied communications engineering in great depth, I encourage you to watch the lectures to witness Gallager's clear style of articulating engineering principles.

The renowned communications theorist Robert Gallager brings his lucid writing style to the study of the fundamental system aspects of digital communication for a one-semester course for graduate students. With the clarity and insight that have characterized his teaching and earlier textbooks, he develops a simple framework and then combines this with careful proofs to help the reader understand modern systems and simplified models in an intuitive yet precise way. A strong narrative and links between theory and practice reinforce this concise, practical presentation. The book begins with data compression for arbitrary sources. Gallager then describes how to modulate the resulting binary data for transmission over wires, cables, optical fibers, and wireless channels. Analysis and intuitive interpretations are developed for channel noise models, followed by coverage of the principles of detection, coding, and decoding. The various concepts covered are brought together in a description of wireless communication, using CDMA as a case study.

MIMO: From Theory to Implementation Review

MIMO: From Theory to Implementation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is not clear from the book description, but this book is certainly not for the beginner in the field of MIMO. It assumes a strong background in DSP, mathematics, and basic understanding of MIMO. In other words, this is an industry book for experts. The book does a great job of covering the basics of MIMO, delving into the advantages of the encoding technique and its evolution over the years. Common MIMO measurements and challenges are discussed thoroughly, and one seeking additional enlightenment can find a huge index of papers and books to which he can refer for further information.
The authors also discuss very specific implementation challenges in addition to the theory, including 802.11N, LTE, and WiMax.
If you are in the industry and want a single book with just about everything you need to know on today's challenges in WiMax, I highly recommend this book. If you are just curious or new, you might want to look elsewhere.

A Foundation in Digital Communication Review

A Foundation in Digital Communication

This book is for the serious student/engineer/scientist that has a solid foundation in math. For such a person this book is a tremendous tool. It explains in the most rigorous way all concepts in the basis of digital comm. No ambiguities are left. Everything is rigorously introduced. I felt like many concepts are more clear now and if you assimilate the material, you'll gain more confidence in dealing with the concepts of digital comm. The author is not afraid of proving important results no matter how long the proof is.
As a unique characteristic (I've read the first 400 pages so far) I could not find but just 1 typo! If you compare this to books like proakis, gallager, goldsmith, Tse, these books have pages and pages of typos. You're almost afraid to start reading them...
With Lapidoth you're in solid ground. Overall a great achievement. I wish and hope that prof. Lapidoth will write a couple of more books on wireless communications, a hot topic where still I cannot find an exceptional textbook (there are several ones that are OK but still with so many errors...).

This intuitive yet rigourous introduction derives the core results of digital communication from first principles. Theory, rather than industry standards, motivates the engineering approaches, and key results are stated with all the required assumptions. The book emphasizes the geometric view, opening with the inner product, the matched filter for its computation, Parseval's theorem, the sampling theorem as an orthonormal expansion, the isometry between passband signals and their baseband representation, and the spectral-efficiency optimality of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). Subsequent chapters address noise, hypothesis testing, Gaussian stochastic processes, and the sufficiency of the matched filter outputs. Uniquely, there is a treatment of white noise without generalized functions, and of the power spectral density without artificial random jitters and random phases in the analysis of QAM. This systematic and insightful book, with over 300 exercises, is ideal for graduate courses in digital communication, and for anyone asking 'why' and not just 'how'.

Introduction to 3G Mobile Communications, Second Edition Review

Introduction to 3G Mobile Communications, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a systematic look at 3G's component parts and underlying technologies. It is not an engineering text in that there are no formulae or engineering details with respect to signalling, capacity or performance (even though network planning considerations are addressed).
It dissects 3G, starting with principles to provide an anchor.
The table of contents shows the progression in which the author deals with 3G as a collection of components, principles and protocols: Principles of Division Multiple Access, WCDMA Air Interface: Physical Layer, Modulation Techniques and Spread Spectrum, Spreading Codes, Channel Coding, WCDMA Air Interface: Protocol Stack. Network, Network Planning, Network Management, Procedures, New Concepts in the UMTS Network, 3G Services, and 3G Applications.
Because of the technical nature of this book and the level of detail given, it's best suited for readers who are familiar with the technical underpinnings of TDMA, CDMA or GSM. The writing is clear and augmented by numerous illustrations, and each chapter ends with a list of references. The references are a strong point about this book because they are up-to-date and include books, papers and URLs.
If you are looking for engineering details this is the wrong book. If you have a background in related technologies and want to quickly get up-to-speed in 3G this is an excellent resource.

Dr. Madhow is an exceptional lecturer. I took several classes from him when he taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He has a very easy to read and intuitive writing style. I highly recommend this book for advanced undergraduates, 1st and 2nd year graduate students and professionals looking for a good review of the fundamentals of digital communications. I have designed many digital communications systems over the course of my career and I can tell you that without the fundamentals I learned from Dr. Madhow, I would have never been able to be an effective communication system designer.

This is a concise presentation of the concepts underlying the design of digital communication systems, without the detail that can overwhelm students. Many examples, from the basic to the cutting-edge, show how the theory is used in the design of modern systems and the relevance of this theory will motivate students. The theory is supported by practical algorithms so that the student can perform computations and simulations. Leading edge topics in coding and wireless communication make this an ideal text for students taking just one course on the subject. Fundamentals of Digital Communications has coverage of turbo and LDPC codes in sufficient detail and clarity to enable hands-on implementation and performance evaluation, as well as 'just enough' information theory to enable computation of performance benchmarks to compare them against. Other unique features include space-time communication and geometric insights into noncoherent communication and equalization.

This book was one of the earliest books on LTE, the new cellular wireless standard that is expected to be commonplace in the next few years. This book is very good for people interested in learning about LTE from a systems architecture standpoint. It covers the EPS and SAE aspects of the system. It explains about the evolved packet core which is integral to the LTE system and also the newer and simpler network elements that constitute the overall LTE eco-system. For those interested in obtaining a deeper understanding of the protocol changes and such, I would recommend the following book by Erik Dahlman titled 3G Evolution, Second Edition: HSPA and LTE for Mobile Broadband.

I'm taking a graduate course of digital communications and using Proakis' book along with Sklar's one. The 2nd one is a very illustrative, book very interesting to read and easy to follow, but when you wanna go further you must go to Proakis' book. This is a more deep reference, who takes more emphasys on mathematical and stochastic models to explain why thing happens in digital communications. In this sense, this book is rigorous, and along with Sklar's book form a very interesting/complemented reference.

WCDMA Design Handbook Review

WCDMA Design Handbook

Prior to the review, i would like to mention that i have over 6 years of experience in Wireless core network Product validation in GSM/UMTS; also i had read another book "UMTS" by "Javier Sanchez" & "Mamadou Thioune". Therefore i had a fair handle on the architecture and aspects of UMTS access, but my understanding was lacking a solid grounding.
I picked up this book and started reading, and it was like all the missing pieces were found, and my understanding stood on a more solid ground. To give a few examples, the coverage of the following things in the second chapte, were pivotal in plugging the gaps in my understanding.
- how to differtiate a UE in uplink as well as downlink
- principles of WCDMA physical layer - channelization & scrambling codes, soft handover, use of compressed mode & power management. These are known by any person who has a "more than casual" study of the UMTS access, but they were clearly marked as differtiators.
- Radio and data connections
- UMTS security architecture etc
What clinches the deal for me is Chapter 3 with its clear explanations of single user spreading code use, multi-user spreading code use(to mention a few) with clear diagrammatic illustrations.
The author has distilled years of experience in this book; any user who is suffciently experieced in wireless networks can pick this book up and glide across from beginning to end
This book caters to R99 UMTS networks;the only thing i wish this book had was the coverage of newer technologies - HSDPA, HSUPA and LTE.

I bought this book sometime ago because I thought that the author's previous book was well written, however I never found time to read it thoroughly.
Over past few months, I discovered that I kept going back to the book and the author's blog to look for reference (e.g. to get a better understanding on SIM card, or to calculate spectrum efficiency and cell capacity, etc.). So I decided to bring this book with me on a trip and finally read the whole book (well... almost). I have to say this is another very well written book from the author. The writing is very clear and the figures show up at where they are needed, nothing fancy, dry, or redundant. Just enough text and figures to cover the topic and I never had to re-read a section to understand the subject (like I usually do when reading a 3GPP standard).
What I liked the most about this book is that the selected areas that the author chose to dive into reflected not only his thorough understanding of the standard, but also his obvious hands-on experience. This book was not only well comprehensible, but also practical, an excellent reference to have at your desk for a wireless engineer. I look forward to read future publications from the author, either at his blog or a new book.

Digital Techniques for Wideband Receivers, Second Edition Review

Digital Techniques for Wideband Receivers, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

This book is a great intro to digital receiver design and techniques. The focus of this book however, is for those receivers which are used for Radar Warning Receivers (RWRs). The second chapter starts off with typical and desirable characteristics applicable to these type of receivers (wides bandwidth and large instantaneous dynamic range, etc). He then uses this intro to gradually introduce all parts of a receiver and signal processing techniques.
This book covers ADC and their pertinent selection criteria, analog RF chain analysis, probability of detection, FFTs, monobit receiver design, antenna arrays, angle of arrival, spectral estimation techniques (I actually like the presentation here more than compared to Proakis and Manolakis's Digital Signal Processing book), and then how do you test it all as a system.
There are many more topics that I am missing, but I think that I have hit on the main points. All in all, I would recommend this book if you are interested in learning the techniques used in RWRs, but the chapter on ADCs is also good for any designer looking for ways to choose ADCs and how to test them.

Telegraph, Telephone, and Wireless: How Telecom Changed the World

In Telegraph, Telephone and Wireless, Bert Lundy examines the origins and early developments of these three communication systems. The work is comprehensive and could replace with one volume a small shelf of communication titles. It should be a first choice for libraries and individuals wanting one book to explain the history of early wired and wireless networks. The book looks at the technology of each system in a simple way without bogging down in technical details. Those that wish to go further can pursue the well done bibliography. But technology is not the only focus here, far from it. The book's 540 pages puts most accomplishments into their necessary context. That includes, where necessary, an inventor's background, regulatory concerns, government policies, financial impacts, and legal issues. Patent law is much discussed. The book reads well and moves quickly. A thoughtful analysis and opinion chapter concludes the work. Lundy should be congratulated for penning such a complete and engaging book.

The Secret Wireless War Review

The Secret Wireless War
Average Reviews:

This is not a James Bond story, nor does it have an exciting fast moving plot; rather it is a detailed history about MI6 communications during WWII written by a man who was part of it. It offers a considerable collection of photos, descriptions and accounts of who, what, when and where MI6 communications operated in England and sites all over the world.
Much has been said about Bletchley Park (BP) and its important work breaking the Enigma codes, but this book tells a great deal of "the rest of the story." To do the work at BP that was so critical, thousands of people were collecting the needed raw communications intelligence and it is the story of these men and women that is told here.
Radio Amateurs (Ham Operators) in particular should find the information about British "VI" (Volunteer Interceptors) very interesting since at least 1500 civilian Radio Amateurs made up this intercept service during the war. In fact, it seems that a great number of the officers, operators and technicians involved in the MI6 communications and Royal Signals were experienced Ham Operators!
If you keep in mind that this is a collected history and not a novel, and you enjoy reading about wartime communications operations, then this will be a most interesting book for your library.
I enjoyed it as I learned about how MI6 conducted it communications during the war.

Possibly the most important UK wireless traffic in World War II was handled by a unit formed in 1938 by Brigadier Richard Gambier-Parry head of MI6 Section VIII - the communications division of SIS.This book tells of its formation and includes diary entries by one of the 'founding fathers' recording the secret meetings that took place, and the assembly of its talented staff. It reports the earlier days of the original SIS wireless 'Station X' based in Barnes in south west London, and the building of its second station in a bungalow in Surrey with the strange name of 'Funny Neuk' - which turned out to be owned by Admiral Sir Hugh Sinclair - 'C' - Chief of Secret Intelligence Services. The units wireless station at Bletchley Park is described and its replacement by the stations at nearby Whaddon Hall which then became the wartime headquarters of Section VIII.It documents the work of our agents in embassies abroad, and of those in German occupied territories; the story of Churchill's personal wireless operator, and there is the description by a German soldier of the Afrika Corps of his operating an Enigma machine at Rommel's headquarters in the desert. The curious story of 'Black Propaganda' is told and the units handling of the military ULTRA traffic out to commanders in the field.Personal tales by those who were part of this most secret of units abound in the book and it is an important record of people and events that-it is no exaggeration to say-helped to win the war.Whilst essential, the technical side of the tale has not been allowed to dominate the book which is profusely illustrated.

3G Evolution, Second Edition: HSPA and LTE for Mobile Broadband Review

3G Evolution, Second Edition: HSPA and LTE for Mobile Broadband
Average Reviews:

As an implementation engineer, I needed to understand in detail each and every aspect of LTE specification. My job is to design the network stack of LTE (both base station and mobile station). When I started reading 3GPP LTE specification(36 series) 4 months ago, I found several sore concepts sticking out. Then I read the first edition of this book and found several concepts cleared. However the first edition had very few pages on LTE and focused more on WCDMA.
Then came this edition. I ordered this book from Amazon and it came within 2 weeks. This book makes understanding of LTE very easy. For instance I had several doubts in the RLC spec of 3gpp. Then I read the RLC content of this book and got all my doubts cleared.
The best thing about this book is that unlike other books, the contents of this book are not directly picked up from specification. It seems the authors of the book have a good grasp of what they are writing and have spent enough time to make it easy to read. Language is very succint. Each line makes sense, is relevant and helps increase understanding of LTE.
Overall this is probably the best book for LTE(and I have read several books). The book has been written in a fluid way and the flow of thought is connected. I have still not read the book completely, but I find myself going to the book again and again(in my free time or bedtime) just because it is a pleasant read.
Cons: At $120 I could not buy the book myself and had to ask my employer to purchase it. I wish they reasonably price it so that I can get a personal copy(and be able to underline several important things).
