This is, perhaps, the most "intuitive" textbook in communications engineering in recent memory. While the emphasis of this text is on theory, Gallager does a fantastic job in connecting the mathematics to engineering. While the target audience of the text is Graduate students, anyone with a decent background in real analysis or linear algebra will be able to get a lot of mileage out of Gallager's approach, which is to start with "toy models", i.e. simple models, and then modify these models accordingly for different environments (i.e. Wireless).
While the book surveys various aspects of communications engineering, such as information theory and wireless communications, the true "meat" of the book lies in its presentation of the most fundamental aspects of communications theory. Notably, this book, like Wozencraft's and Jacob's Principles of Communication Engineering, presents the signal space approach (using L2 orthonormal expansions to represent waveforms and noise) to a in a very clear manner. Most communications engineering books these days seem to (incorrectly) teach students (including myself as an undergraduate) to reason about problems in communications theory primarily in terms of cosines and sines. This text, however makes it clear that most problems in communications theory can be explained in terms of the signal space viewpoint.
There probably isn't a single word, phrase, or mathematical expression that is not needed in this text. As another reviewer mentioned, readers have the benefit of being able to watch Gallager's online lectures, which complement this text, via MIT Open Courseware. Even if you have not studied communications engineering in great depth, I encourage you to watch the lectures to witness Gallager's clear style of articulating engineering principles.

The various concepts covered are brought together in a description of wireless communication, using CDMA as a case study.

This book is for the serious student/engineer/scientist that has a solid foundation in math. For such a person this book is a tremendous tool. It explains in the most rigorous way all concepts in the basis of digital comm. No ambiguities are left. Everything is rigorously introduced. I felt like many concepts are more clear now and if you assimilate the material, you'll gain more confidence in dealing with the concepts of digital comm. The author is not afraid of proving important results no matter how long the proof is.
As a unique characteristic (I've read the first 400 pages so far) I could not find but just 1 typo! If you compare this to books like proakis, gallager, goldsmith, Tse, these books have pages and pages of typos. You're almost afraid to start reading them...
With Lapidoth you're in solid ground. Overall a great achievement. I wish and hope that prof. Lapidoth will write a couple of more books on wireless communications, a hot topic where still I cannot find an exceptional textbook (there are several ones that are OK but still with so many errors...).

This intuitive yet rigourous introduction derives the core results of digital communication from first principles. Theory, rather than industry standards, motivates the engineering approaches, and key results are stated with all the required assumptions. The book emphasizes the geometric view, opening with the inner product, the matched filter for its computation, Parseval's theorem, the sampling theorem as an orthonormal expansion, the isometry between passband signals and their baseband representation, and the spectral-efficiency optimality of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). Subsequent chapters address noise, hypothesis testing, Gaussian stochastic processes, and the sufficiency of the matched filter outputs. Uniquely, there is a treatment of white noise without generalized functions, and of the power spectral density without artificial random jitters and random phases in the analysis of QAM. This is a textbook and it seems to me that it's meant to be used in a classroom environment. That being said, it's not as dry as many that I had when I was in school.
After the preface and introduction the book launches into sixteen and a third pages of abbreviations and you need to spend some time with these pages as the abbreviations are used throughout the book.
There are twelve chapters here: Chapter 1: Introduction to Mobile Broadband Wireless Access. Chapter 2: WiMax Network Architecture. Chapter 3: IEEE 802.16m Reference Model and Protocol Structure. Chapter 4: IEEE 802.16m System Operation and State Diagrams. Chapter 5: The IEEE 802.16m Convergence Sub-Layer. Chapter 6: The IEEE 802.16m Medium Access Control Common Part Sub-layer Part 1 and Chapter 7 is Part 2. Chapter 8: The IEEE 802.16m Security Sub-Layer. Chapter 9: The IEEE 802.16m Physical Layer Part 1 and Chapter 10 is Part 2. Chapter 11: Multi-Carrier Operation. And lastly Chapter 12: Performance of IEEE 802.16m and 3GPP LTE-Advanced.
There you have it, a list of the chapters in this book. I'm no expert, not even a novice. I got this book for my nerdy brother who eats this stuff up. But I agreed to review the book and I sincerely hope that if you're interested in it, that the information I gave you above will help you.

Dr. Madhow is an exceptional lecturer. I took several classes from him when he taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He has a very easy to read and intuitive writing style. I highly recommend this book for advanced undergraduates, 1st and 2nd year graduate students and professionals looking for a good review of the fundamentals of digital communications. I have designed many digital communications systems over the course of my career and I can tell you that without the fundamentals I learned from Dr. Madhow, I would have never been able to be an effective communication system designer.

The book don't have an in-depth detail concerning the material, but its reading can be very fluent speeding up the understanding of the covered concepts. This is also all thanks to its simple (but not simpler nor simplistic) presentation of the concepts, e.g., no complicated formulas neither complicated schemes nor complicated views; only the essencial. In spite of these features, the book is excelent to understand the material, but also it is an excelent book to the beginer reader how want to be in touch with the sebject. In my personal case, it was of good help and I strongly recomend both for update the knowledges and for use in teaching classes.

Let me first make sure where this book stands. Well, if you are an undergraduate student, then this book is not for you. If you are a first or second year graduate student pursuing non-thesis masters, then this book is not for you. This book covers some of the advanced topics that are somewhat redundant for the students of aforementioned categories.
In my opinion, this book is useful for the graduate students who are either pursuing PhD or at least trying to accomplish a master's thesis. This might also serve as an excellent reference book for professional engineers who work in R&D.
This not a typical book where one, two or even three writers flock together to write a whole book. Rather each chapter of this book is written by several persons who are expert to that specific topic. For example, one of the authors of Chapter 2 OFDM is Ramjee Prasad who is probably the best known person in the area of OFDM. Hence the reader can be assured about the contents. Last but not least, the book is edited by another legend of current communications world Vahid Tarokh.
The name of the book is pretty much self explanatory. As the name says the book provides a clear view of the underlying technologies used in current wireless world. Most importantly it provides direction about the trend of near future wireless technology such as LTE or cooperative communications. Anyone who is conducting research in this area can get insight about the trend of current research and gear his research towards that direction. In my opinion this book can serve as life saver for the new PhD students who are still searching a suitable research topic for their PhD dissertation.
