Simulation and Software Radio for Mobile Communications (Artech House Universal Personal Communications) Review

Simulation and Software Radio for Mobile Communications (Artech House Universal Personal Communications)

Harada & Prasad provide a very good working-level
understanding of how to simulate communication systems
using MATLAB. This book will appeal to advanced
undergraduate and beginning graduate electrical
engineers. It emphasizes nuts&bolts simulation, and
assumes a good working knowledge of communication
system analysis. Professionals who use MATLAB to
analyze communication systems for a living will find
the coverage fairly basic - even shallow - but the
authors well meet their goal of giving beginners a
better leg up on the process. Including their MATLAB
source code on a CD with the book may make the purchase
worthwhile all by itself.

A Foundation in Digital Communication Review

A Foundation in Digital Communication
Average Reviews:

This book is for the serious student/engineer/scientist that has a solid foundation in math. For such a person this book is a tremendous tool. It explains in the most rigorous way all concepts in the basis of digital comm. No ambiguities are left. Everything is rigorously introduced. I felt like many concepts are more clear now and if you assimilate the material, you'll gain more confidence in dealing with the concepts of digital comm. The author is not afraid of proving important results no matter how long the proof is.
As a unique characteristic (I've read the first 400 pages so far) I could not find but just 1 typo! If you compare this to books like proakis, gallager, goldsmith, Tse, these books have pages and pages of typos. You're almost afraid to start reading them...
With Lapidoth you're in solid ground. Overall a great achievement. I wish and hope that prof. Lapidoth will write a couple of more books on wireless communications, a hot topic where still I cannot find an exceptional textbook (there are several ones that are OK but still with so many errors...).

This intuitive yet rigourous introduction derives the core results of digital communication from first principles. Theory, rather than industry standards, motivates the engineering approaches, and key results are stated with all the required assumptions. The book emphasizes the geometric view, opening with the inner product, the matched filter for its computation, Parseval's theorem, the sampling theorem as an orthonormal expansion, the isometry between passband signals and their baseband representation, and the spectral-efficiency optimality of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). Subsequent chapters address noise, hypothesis testing, Gaussian stochastic processes, and the sufficiency of the matched filter outputs. Uniquely, there is a treatment of white noise without generalized functions, and of the power spectral density without artificial random jitters and random phases in the analysis of QAM. This systematic and insightful book, with over 300 exercises, is ideal for graduate courses in digital communication, and for anyone asking 'why' and not just 'how'.

Excellent book.
Despite of ignoring Winner models that book is a very helpful.
Costa introduces in the 2nd chapter all the basis you need to make students understand correlative and cluster models discussed in 3rd and 4th chapters.
Helpful appendices on tensor theory and useful examples in 6th chapter.
The book is pretty short, but MIMO channel modeling is also a recent subject.

I used this book for a first course on DSP. This book is very practical. It is loaded with Matlab algorithms that will make your discrete signal processing simulation development enjoyable and challenging.
The Matlab examples cover just about every thing encountered in DSP development. It covers statistical signal analysis, adaptive filter design, FIR, IIR and other important topics.
Readers of this book should download the entire code examples used in this book off the website assigned to this book.

Based on fundamental principles from mathematics, linear systems, and signal analysis, digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms are useful for extracting information from signals collected all around us. Combined with today's powerful computing capabilities, they can be used in a wide range of application areas, including engineering, communications, geophysics, computer science, information technology, medicine, and biometrics. Updated and expanded, Digital Signal Processing with Examples in MATLAB, Second Edition introduces the basic aspects of signal processing and presents the fundamentals of DSP. It also relates DSP to continuous signal processing, rather than treating it as an isolated operation.New to the Second EditionDiscussion of current DSP applications New chapters on analog systems models and pattern recognition using support vector machinesNew sections on the chirp z-transform, resampling, waveform reconstruction, discrete sine transform, and logarithmic and nonuniform sampling A more comprehensive table of transformsDeveloping the fundamentals of DSP from the ground up, this bestselling text continues to provide readers with a solid foundation for further work in most areas of signal processing. For novices, the authors review the basic mathematics required to understand DSP systems and offer a brief introduction to MATLAB. They also include end-of-chapter exercises that not only provide examples of the topics discussed, but also introduce topics and applications not covered in the chapters.

Signals and Systems Laboratory with MATLAB Review

Signals and Systems Laboratory with MATLAB

This book provides a very efficient way to the direct adoption of fundamental concepts and the implementation of advanced techniques in Signal Processing (SP).
Although one can find plenty of books in the market covering aspects of SP in a pure theoretical sense and also several others teaching the MATLAB language itself in a function-to-function basis, however it is very difficult to identify a single handbook oriented mainly toward the direct implementation of SP techniques. Since SP is a prerequisite for many scientific fields of engineering and other applied sciences, it is very frequent that many times we cannot proceed very easily in the completion of a task or a project, since basic concepts related to the signal nature are missing (e.g. Frequency Response, Sampling Theory, Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) etc). On the other hand, several people interested in the area, especially students, find it really difficult to follow the mathematic manipulations found in the literature or being taught in the class, since they cannot "play" with the signal in a try-and-error way.
This book is novel in the sense that it smoothly bridges the gap between theory of SP and practice in terms of implementation through simple MATLAB commands. The reader can easily grab a concept related to SP, either simple or advanced, by studying the corresponding compact theoretical background (without being confused with generalities or unnecessary details) and looking at the provided examples along with the given graphs in order to visualize the effect of the SP action. Additionally, with just a few commands typed in the MATLAB Command Window, he/she can effortlessly reproduce the same results that can be used as a basis for further processing. However, it is evident, that if the potential reader wants to focus much further on a specific concept/technique, then this material has to be accompanied by a more theoretical oriented SP book.
I absolutely recommend this handbook to everyone that can understand the value of the top-to-bottom approach in the study!

Smart Antennas for Wireless Communications: With MATLAB (Professional Engineering) Review

Smart Antennas for Wireless Communications: With MATLAB (Professional Engineering)
Average Reviews:

This textbook is the best of all fundamental texts on smart antennas and adaptive arrays. It reduces this complex topic into the basic elements that are necessary for understanding smart antennas. Basic chapters are written on electromagnetics, antennas, arrays, random processes, channel modeling, spectral estimation, and adaptive arrays. Most chapters include worked out Matlab examples illustrating concepts just explained. The Matlab codes for each example, figure, and homework problems are included with the text. I have seen no other comparable text which lucidly explains the foundations of smart antennas and which also gives computer examples.

OFDM Baseband Receiver Design for Wireless Communications Review

OFDM Baseband Receiver Design for Wireless Communications
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For some reason I thought this would be a "direct from RF to baseband" OFDM receiver design book, including example circuitry, etc.. Instead it does not cover any RF modulation/demodulation issues, other than to show a block diagram including "RF TX" and "RF TX" (a typo, should be "RF RX"). English is choppy in spots, but completely understandable. If you are looking for lots of theory and diagrams concerning the many aspects of OFDM receiver design, this is a good book. If you are looking for anything hardware related, or even RF mod/demod issues, you will be disappointed.
