I used this book for a first course on DSP. This book is very practical. It is loaded with Matlab algorithms that will make your discrete signal processing simulation development enjoyable and challenging.
The Matlab examples cover just about every thing encountered in DSP development. It covers statistical signal analysis, adaptive filter design, FIR, IIR and other important topics.
Readers of this book should download the entire code examples used in this book off the website assigned to this book.

I'm working on cross-layer design of OFDM based wireless system such as 802.16e and 802.11n. This book gave me a good overview of whole system from physical layer, MAC layer, to frequency planning. Basic concepts are clearly defined and key design issues are well investigated. This book is especially useful for those networking guys, like me, who want to move from networking layer down to physical layer to do cross-layer optimization. You may want to know physical layer but not every single detail. This book gives me a good abstraction of physical layer for OFDM as well as MIMO.

If you do not have any technical experience in wireless and you are looking to get a grasp on the basic technology, applications, and market, I would recommend this book. Sit down read it through quickly then move on. If you have moderate wireless experience and are trying to get caught up on 2.5G and 3G technology and standards, this is NOT the book.
Beyond this point, I found that Bates repeated the same information time and time again without any new twist. I can not say that I will forget what he had to say, but he did not enrich the information. He also prognosticates based upon inspiration without any facts. After the latest "hockey stick market" bust, I would be careful basing any demand and penetration projections on historical information.
Finally, do not use the table of contents as an indicator of the depth of this book (like I did).

If you are looking for a book that clearly explains the mysteries of OFDM and COFDM then, you will have to wait. This is not that book. Much is left to "as an exercise for the student." There is some generic stuff on coding but how it relates to multipath mitigation is not clear. There are no good pictures of spectrums. The effect of amplifier non-linearities is inadequately addressed. The concept of IFFT as applied to modulation is not explained in a way you can understand it quickly. The section on coherent and differential detection is uneven in the amount of detail and understandability. The whole book has in places either too much math or not enough. There is no section on performance that tells you what the end to performance might be. Good try but far from perfect.

This book is the "BEST" book I have ever seen in wireless technology with "practical" physical layer design focus. It is not surprising to see the author coming from rich industrial experience, I can see that easily in the book. I highly recommend the book for physical layer designers.
