Don't be put off by the word "Testing" in the title - there is an emphasis on RF and protocol test aspects of the UE, but this book would still be very useful to someone who is involved with general UE development/support/testing rather than just those digging into the depths of PTCRB testing, for example.

- Guide to useful 3GPP technical specs, reasonably helpful index (as opposed to some early Wiley UMTS books)
The real highlight for me is the standard of technical writing: lucid, brief but not too terse, and - where I can tell - correct. I use this as my main UMTS technical reference for UE and air interface descriptions and supplement with other books for CN. As a bridge to the standards it works very well and is well worth the investment.

So what is a femtocell? It is a catchy name for a device "smaller" than a picocell [hence femto], that allows wireless access to a phone network and in practice also to the Internet. The book suggests that femtocells can play an important role in expanding wireless coverage to the interiors of buildings. Currently, basestations for mobile phones work best when the phones are outside. Once inside a building, the attenuation can be great enough so that contact is intermittent or non-existent. The crude workaround of having a basestation expand its power level is costly, both in terms of increasing interference with other basestations and also in the cost of the power. Plus, this still might not suffice to let a user inside a building get wireless contact.
The use of a femtocell inside a building is also reinforced by the expectation that this gadget will be bought and installed by an individual who lives there, or by a company who uses that building. This frees the cellular operator from the capital cost of supplying the femtocell. But as the book makes amply clear, a consequence is that femtocell setup, initialisation and maintenance needs to be as simple as possible; autonomic is the phrase used by the text. Readers might see the analogy with the popular use of DHCP for users with laptops who connect, wired or wirelessly, to the Internet. DHCP has greatly reduced the cognitive requirement on the users regarding low level technical settings.
A major issue in the book is how to handle handoffs when a mobile device moves between a femtocell and another femtocell or a macrocell [the latter is the regular cell around a basestation]. Several algorithms are proposed to optimise the change overs.

I was introduced to this book by my colleague. He lent me a copy he had. I was an engineer in audio/acoustics who started to work in the mobile telephony field. I found a wealth of information in the book, and found the book easy to read at the same time. No high-brow, difficult to read writing at all.
I bought my own copy shortly after. I read this book again just prior to my interview with my present employer. It certainly helped me landing my job! This is an excellent book, and I heartlily recommend all who are working in this area.

If you do not have any technical experience in wireless and you are looking to get a grasp on the basic technology, applications, and market, I would recommend this book. Sit down read it through quickly then move on. If you have moderate wireless experience and are trying to get caught up on 2.5G and 3G technology and standards, this is NOT the book.
Beyond this point, I found that Bates repeated the same information time and time again without any new twist. I can not say that I will forget what he had to say, but he did not enrich the information. He also prognosticates based upon inspiration without any facts. After the latest "hockey stick market" bust, I would be careful basing any demand and penetration projections on historical information.
Finally, do not use the table of contents as an indicator of the depth of this book (like I did).

Unlike alot of other books out there, the title of this book is right on the money when it comes to the content of the book. This book IS an essential guide to wireless communications. Like many other people out there, I often read the online articles and technical editorials of Mr. Dornan (do a web search, they are great reading too!). So I thought I could not go wrong with his book. I was right. Starting with a bit of a history lesson, the author takes you through current 2/2.5G cellular and then hits the ground running. He doesn't stop until he has covered 3G, wireless LANs, messaging, WAP, wireless e-commerce, security, fixed wireless (WLL) and satellite technology. Mr. Dornan has a great writing style and throughly knows his material. So, no matter what your knowledge level, the read always has a light and easy feel to it and is still able to communicate a ton of relivant information to you. If you need a good starting place on wireless communications or a refresher course, you won't find too many books better than this one.

This book is NOT for you if you plan on building or designing an RF circuit. It is definetely not for the TECHNICAL consumer.
But it is meant for people who just want to get the gist of RF technology. This review is to warn people who are planning to get into the area of RF. You may want to purchase RF Circuit Design by Chris Bowick instead. If your into the theory of RF, avoid this book.
3 stars and no less because it was well written. No more no less.
And Carl Weisman was right, when he said "hide the book from engineers."

This book is a must buy for newcomers to the wireless industry or for those who just want to know how wireless systems work. I gave this a 4 instead of a 5 because I was expecting a little more digital wireless information. This book gives an excellent explanation of analog cellular, the foundation of wireless as we know it today. There is a section later in the book that goes over digital wireless, (GSM, CDMA, TDMA). I think differences between analog and digital protocols should be discussed throughout the book, not just one section at the end. The author does an excellent job of taking a very complex system and filtering out the technical jargon to give the readers a book that has a balance of technical information that is easy to read and easy to understand. This is a great book for your money, and it is definitely worth your time to read it.
