This book about GSM is a very clearly written and yet concisely written. Its true that this book of such a small size cannot substitute for reading the standards. However for the purposes of getting a system point of view ,understanding the Access side protocol stack this book is very good.
Especially the chapter on Physical Layer is so concise and yet covers almost everything you might want to know about Physical Layer.
Highly recommended.

As the author indicates at the beginning of the book, "From GSM to LTE" provides a comprehensive overview of this evolution of modern wireless technologies, in a single concise but comprehensive format accessible to anyone with a prior background in communications theory. It is a plus that the author avoids the mathematics behind these standards, instead focusing on the "how and why" of all the technical components of GSM, GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/UMTS, and LTE, without going into the mind-numbing detail of the actual technical standards, which are nonetheless cited for those who wish to refer to them to actually implement these technologies. The book also has chapters on IEEE 802.16 (WiMax), IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n (WLAN), and Bluetooth, but I have not yet read them.

The title suggests that it would be a design book but the book is short on implementation details. Bulk of the book covers GSM. I expected it to have more WCDMA coverage, implementation schemes and design trade offs. Another issue is that book has spelling mistakes and does not appear to be proof read very well.

When you pick this book up, it looks completely boring! Neither the title nor the cover is enticing. However the content is excellent - it has a thorough coverage of all kinds of current and upcoming wireless technologies. Not many books today mention anything about technologies such as bluetooth, however this one has a couple of pages coverage. If you're looking to get an overview of what is happening in wireless, this is a good place to start. I would definitely recommend picking up a copy of this book - I was very happy to have bought it.

I was introduced to this book by my colleague. He lent me a copy he had. I was an engineer in audio/acoustics who started to work in the mobile telephony field. I found a wealth of information in the book, and found the book easy to read at the same time. No high-brow, difficult to read writing at all.
I bought my own copy shortly after. I read this book again just prior to my interview with my present employer. It certainly helped me landing my job! This is an excellent book, and I heartlily recommend all who are working in this area.

Authors Chetan Sharma and Yasuhisa Nakamura diligently track the development of the most important wireless technologies and standards, sketch the anatomy of the value chain and make some informed judgments about the future direction of various wireless industry segments. They also examine the social and cultural influence of wireless. The book is refreshingly free of the hype and hucksterism that characterizes so many books about the business of technology. However, some readers will find its relentless focus and its scrupulously neutral prose hard to take in any but small doses. We highly recommend this book to anyone in the wireless industry whose job demands an understanding of the field's broader business and technological context. The lengthy list of industry abbreviations and acronyms is a particularly valuable feature.

Brodsky offers a wonderful history of wireless in terms of who and why, something that has been lacking in a wireless history book until this publication. Those interested in understanding the personal connections of the individuals involved through the development of this industry will want to read it. Those who are working in the industry or desire to break in as entrepreneurs need to read it. His last section on creativity is wonderfully useful. If you have the guts to truly innovate, or are doing so now in any industry I highly recommend this book. It was obvious the material was well researched (due to the limited information available on some of the individuals involved from a historic perspective, Brodsky did provide sufficient information to get his many points across, somewhat rare in a book that covers 130+ years through the development of an industry). There was only one element that I would have liked to see him expand on a bit more, and that was in the area of convergence. I think a few more pages devoted to the cable and telephone networks along with wireless would have rounded out this section perfectly; but then maybe not, as it potentially could have risked loosing the true focus of wireless.

A book for the communications engineer who has to build in roaming on a cellular network. How GSM and GPRS permit this is explained in detail. The protocols and structure of messages sent is laid out. If you have dealt with TCP/IP, then some of the ideas will be familiar.
3G networks are also covered. Somewhat newer. But the roaming descriptions suggest a capability comparable to those under GSM and GPRS.

In this book, the authors address the architecture of the 2/3G network and the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. But it is meant for people who just want to get the gist of RF technology. This review is to warn people who are planning to get into the area of RF. You may want to purchase RF Circuit Design by Chris Bowick instead. If your into the theory of RF, avoid this book.
3 stars and no less because it was well written. No more no less.
And Carl Weisman was right, when he said "hide the book from engineers."
