This book gives an excellent overview of the way 3G networks are operating: air interface, radio access and core elements. It compiles and represents in readable form various IETF RFC and 3GPP documents. For my daily work I would appreciate more details on all-IP UMTS (the book ends with UMTS release 5), MEF backhaul, IpSec and packet core elements. I would trade extensive coverage of ATM, GPRS legacy and barely readable network captures for that. I hope a second edition with more contemporary subheading "IP, MEF, LTE and NGMN" is already in authors' pipeline. I'm on a waiting list...

Don't be put off by the word "Testing" in the title - there is an emphasis on RF and protocol test aspects of the UE, but this book would still be very useful to someone who is involved with general UE development/support/testing rather than just those digging into the depths of PTCRB testing, for example.
Highlights:
- General UMTS architecture overview
- Physical layer
- Layer 2
- Layer 3
- Protocol testing
- HSDPA
- Future directions
- Guide to useful 3GPP technical specs, reasonably helpful index (as opposed to some early Wiley UMTS books)
The real highlight for me is the standard of technical writing: lucid, brief but not too terse, and - where I can tell - correct. I use this as my main UMTS technical reference for UE and air interface descriptions and supplement with other books for CN. As a bridge to the standards it works very well and is well worth the investment.

This is one of the best organized and illustrated technical books on universal mobile telecommunications system - UMTS. It explains how this WCDMA, HSPA, and LTE system is packet based and is significantly different than its GSM and GPRS predecessors. There are good descriptions of key network elements including Node B (base stations), radio network controllers - RNC, subscriber databases - HLR and VLR, circuit switched gateways - GMSC, packet switched gateways/service nodes - GGSN. The book explains the physical and logical channel structures, their operation, and their relationships with each other (there are many channel configuration options). If you need a good technical understanding of WCDMA/UMTS, HSPA, and LTE radio access technology and system elements, this is a great book.

As the author indicates at the beginning of the book, "From GSM to LTE" provides a comprehensive overview of this evolution of modern wireless technologies, in a single concise but comprehensive format accessible to anyone with a prior background in communications theory. It is a plus that the author avoids the mathematics behind these standards, instead focusing on the "how and why" of all the technical components of GSM, GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/UMTS, and LTE, without going into the mind-numbing detail of the actual technical standards, which are nonetheless cited for those who wish to refer to them to actually implement these technologies. The book also has chapters on IEEE 802.16 (WiMax), IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n (WLAN), and Bluetooth, but I have not yet read them.

The title suggests that it would be a design book but the book is short on implementation details. Bulk of the book covers GSM. I expected it to have more WCDMA coverage, implementation schemes and design trade offs. Another issue is that book has spelling mistakes and does not appear to be proof read very well.

As a newcomer to standardisation work, this book has proven invaluable and my only regret is that it wasn't available when I first started work on LTE about a year ago. The book has saved me hours of tedious scouring of standards text. In this respect it is valuable both for people who are in telcos management and need an overview of LTE, as well as standards engineers who are well acquainted with the topic as it will prepare them for a more in-depth look into LTE.
Some highlights include:
1. A great introductory overview of the evolution to 4G, impartial and technically sound.
2. An in-depth analysis of the physical layer of LTE. The details include state-of-the-art simulation results and highlight the technical achievements that make the promised transfer rates and quality of service possible. The results are preceded by background theory. I found the parts on OFDM and MIMO as key enablers particularly succinct and useful. Some abstract terms, such as the notion of control channels and antenna ports, are explained in a lucid and easy-to-follow way, showing you not just what LTE mandates, but also why it is designed the way it is and what the engineering drivers behind it are.
3. An overview of higher layers, more than enough to understand how the layered paradigm is implemented in LTE.
4. The consistency of the book throughout. In my opinion you rarely see books with so many contributing authors that flow as well as this one does. Clearly, a lot of effort went into maintaining a unified style and approach, and it was well worth it.
The editors-authors are active contributors to 3GPP standardisation, and so are most of the contributing authors (with some input from academia), representing many different companies. The book therefore has a unique quality of being impartial while coming straight from the source. While only a couple of pages long, the final chapter examines the future evolution of LTE: LTE-Advanced. Thoroughly recommended.

Well writen and well presented. Chapters on HSDPA and HSUPA are very good. Summary bullet points at the start of each chapter are a nice idea - good for revision when you're trying to remember everything. Also useful to have the relevant 3GPP specifications listed there. Chapter on logical, transport and physical channels includes plenty of detail. Signalling procedures chapter very comprehensive. Good to see link budgets described in detail. This book should be valuable to anyone working on or studying UMTS.

Overall, I am pleased with its content. It is clearly written. The topics are covered in a nice way that is comprehensive. The treatment of topics is balanced. Some topics are overemphasized but that may be necessary for people who are beginners in the field.
Many books are available in this field, but I believe this one is very comprehensive, especially emphasizing wimax and Lte technology no other book has done.

This book is an extremely well written account of LTE, with the emphasis on the design and implementation of the air interface physical layer.
Chapters 1 to 5 give the reader a clear, concise account of the 3GPP specifications for LTE. Unusually for a telecommunications book, the material is extremely well written and easy to read, indicating a lot of care by the editor and authors. The information is quite densely packed and really requires previous knowledge of 3G, but is probably the most effective account of LTE that I have so far read.
My one suggestion for improvement lies in chapters 4 and 5, where I would have appreciated some use cases to illustrate how the different procedures and network elements interact. But this is not an important issue, and does not affect my overall rating.
The book really comes in to its own in chapters 6 and 7, which cover material relevant to design and implementation that lies outside the scope of the specifications. Especially valuable was a 60 page account of the characterisation and measurement of the transmitter and receiver, reinforced by signal analyser plots that illustrate what the main signal impairments actually look like. A concluding chapter describes the enhancements that are being made in LTE-Advanced, to meet the ITU's requirements for 4G.
Because of the material in chapters 6 and 7, this book will be especially valuable to those who are working on the lower parts of the LTE physical layer. However I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who requires a clearly written introduction to LTE.

From both a technical and a practical point of view, there is much to examine, evaluate and understand in the new 3GPP LTE cellular technology before its projected deployment in 2010. Chapters also cover the upper layer signalling and system architecture evolution (SAE). I have already read quite a few of the UMTS/WCDMA books on the market. This books does a superb job presenting the essential concepts of UMTS, without relying on complex equations to convey the information. The author is able to boil-up the technical details into very concise ideas, and express them clearly. There are plenty of diagrams and tables that help to illustrate the concepts.
Having already been knowledgeable about UMTS, I thought the book hit each important area with clarity: system architecture, protocol stack, air interface, signaling procedures, and services. While it does help to already be familiar with cellular communications, this book is an excellent place to start if you are new to UMTS. It's also a great high level overview for managers.

It's a very good book, it presents 3g concepts as well as other wireless networks. It has some practical examples, which makes complex concepts more clear. For a deep explanation of CDMA concepts and mathematics, you would need another book, but with this one you can get a more practical approach to CDMA. After reading this book, you would have a very precise idea of what is next in telecommunicactions. I think is a good book, though, is highly recommendable to also get UMTS and CDMA2000 specification, they are available for free.

A book for the communications engineer who has to build in roaming on a cellular network. How GSM and GPRS permit this is explained in detail. The protocols and structure of messages sent is laid out. If you have dealt with TCP/IP, then some of the ideas will be familiar.
3G networks are also covered. Somewhat newer. But the roaming descriptions suggest a capability comparable to those under GSM and GPRS.

In this book, the authors address the architecture of the 2/3G network and the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network.
