IP for 4G Review

IP for 4G
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Currently, various telecom operators throughout the world are involved in building out 3g mobile systems. But a so-called 4g has been mooted by various parties. What is this 4g? And what might be the prospects of running the Internet Protocol over it? Wisely explores these questions in this recent book (2009).
The tone is somewhat informal, which may not be to some readers' tastes, so you've been warned.
Much of the book summarises many details about current 3g and wireless LANs. It is definitely a technical discussion. But part of the value that Wisely provides the reader is he steps back from the hugely verbose descriptions of many wireless schemes. To an engineering reader, enough operational details are given for you to appreciate the gists of the systems.
From a business standpoint, the key value might be in the final chapter. Assessments are offered for future mobile services and systems. Though scattered thru the book are other related observations. We see that some previous predictions by telecos have been awry. Notably that SMS was originally intended for diagnostics by telecom engineers, yet it has grown immensely as a popular mass mode of communication and a huge revenue source.
Another observation is that 4g, at least initially, might not involve IPv6. The latter keeps getting pushed further into the future. So if you are devising an IP over 4g application, you might design for IPv4, at least for the initial years of deployment.
Things have changed since I reviewed another book on 4g, 2 years ago, 4G Roadmap and Emerging Communication Technologies (Universal Personal Communications). That text had much to say on Digital Rights Management. In contrast, Wisely omits this topic. Possibly because the intervening time has led to an overall deprecation of DRM.
One thing that Wisely chronicles well is how the current telecos face a conundrum. They want 4g to be a major new revenue stream. But if they offer IP over 4g, there is a danger that they will be reduced to dumb pipes, just supplying commodity access to the Internet. Whereupon Internet based services like search engines and auction sites might garner most of the profits, as they have done with fixed Internet access. The telecos don't want to end up like the ISPs! Hence the possible rise of walled gardens with restricted access.
How will all this play out?

This book was one of the earliest books on LTE, the new cellular wireless standard that is expected to be commonplace in the next few years. This book is very good for people interested in learning about LTE from a systems architecture standpoint. It covers the EPS and SAE aspects of the system. It explains about the evolved packet core which is integral to the LTE system and also the newer and simpler network elements that constitute the overall LTE eco-system. For those interested in obtaining a deeper understanding of the protocol changes and such, I would recommend the following book by Erik Dahlman titled 3G Evolution, Second Edition: HSPA and LTE for Mobile Broadband.

I bought this book sometime ago because I thought that the author's previous book was well written, however I never found time to read it thoroughly.
Over past few months, I discovered that I kept going back to the book and the author's blog to look for reference (e.g. to get a better understanding on SIM card, or to calculate spectrum efficiency and cell capacity, etc.). So I decided to bring this book with me on a trip and finally read the whole book (well... almost). I have to say this is another very well written book from the author. The writing is very clear and the figures show up at where they are needed, nothing fancy, dry, or redundant. Just enough text and figures to cover the topic and I never had to re-read a section to understand the subject (like I usually do when reading a 3GPP standard).
What I liked the most about this book is that the selected areas that the author chose to dive into reflected not only his thorough understanding of the standard, but also his obvious hands-on experience. This book was not only well comprehensible, but also practical, an excellent reference to have at your desk for a wireless engineer. I look forward to read future publications from the author, either at his blog or a new book.

LTE for 4G Mobile Broadband: Air Interface Technologies and Performance Review

LTE for 4G Mobile Broadband: Air Interface Technologies and Performance

Working in 4G / WiMAX for last two years as part of team for launching the 1st Commercial Mobile 4 G network in Baltimore/Washington DC and being responsible for the 1st trail test bed in Arlington, I am always in look for 4 G materials and books.
This is one of the best books so far I have come across regarding the 4th Generating Mobile networks. The 400 plus pages are a power house of sheer knowledge and explanations regarding the 4th generation and LTE. The books covers almost every subject matter starting from the basic network architecture to the advance topics like Channel coding, MIMO, Scheduling, H-ARQ, P-Control, signaling details, so on and so forth. One of the best chapters I like is the Chapter 16 i.e. Page 409 to 425, where Interferences, cell edge, frequency reuse and loading is discussed. I believe that these are the must know topic for anyone who is going to design the Future LTE and 4th generation networks. The point I especially liked is the diagrams. The book has adequate diagrams which are clear and precise that describes the text in perfect supplement. There are also a lot of mathematical expressions which not only proves the detail explanations but also show the full command of Author of the subject. As said, the topics are well explained and we do not need any more details but never the less there is a detail list of references at the end of each chapter.
For me it is kind of hard to find a short coming of book as it is so well written and the author is a SME. We could have an extra cherry on the cake by have some more treatment of the IP / network regarding the LTE and 4th generation by beefing up the chapter regarding the network architecture and protocol. For marketing and management staff, I talked to they would like to have more of an extended summary in start of chapters without technical details. Last but not least, in due time it will be interesting to see how the real networks data compares out to the chapter 19 regarding the LTE performance and verification. I am sure both will be in perfect accordance.

I'm working on cross-layer design of OFDM based wireless system such as 802.16e and 802.11n. This book gave me a good overview of whole system from physical layer, MAC layer, to frequency planning. Basic concepts are clearly defined and key design issues are well investigated. This book is especially useful for those networking guys, like me, who want to move from networking layer down to physical layer to do cross-layer optimization. You may want to know physical layer but not every single detail. This book gives me a good abstraction of physical layer for OFDM as well as MIMO.

Fundamentals of WiMAX: Understanding Broadband Wireless Networking Review

Fundamentals of WiMAX: Understanding Broadband Wireless Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for a book on WiMax as a reference for designing WiMax radios. Trying to understand WiMax by reading the IEEE 802.16, 16e standards is difficult. The original 802.16-2004 standard was organized in a convoluted way. On top of that there were numerous errors, even in the mathematical formula and the critical system parameters. 16e was written as a errata and addendum to .16. Given the amount of major changes required by .16e, this format of a .16+.16e makes it almost impossible to read to gain engineering understanding. I was looking for a book that could untangle this mess and present the information in .16+.16e in a linear and logical way, if not the MAC, at least the PHYs. The Andrews book does not serve this purpose. Most of the technical details of the WiMax system are missing. For example, a WiMax radio starts with transmitting or receiving the preambles. There are hundreds of preambles in WiMax. I would expect the book to describe all these preambles for reference. It would be even better, if there are insights into the mathematical properties of these preambles for the receiver design. If you agree with my statement, just let me say that the Andrews book contains none of the details the preambles beyond saying WiMax has something called preamble. Of the limited amount of PHY details the book did contain, there are critical errors. For example, the book seems to suggest that the downlink PUSC subchannels consist of two chunks of contiguous OFDM subcarriers of 14 each. According to the 802.16/16e, the 28 subcarriers in a subchannel are scattered. For the lack of details, I feel this book serves poorly as an engineering design reference. It also serves poorly as a guide to untangle the material in IEE802.16/16e due to the lack of details and the critical errors.
