LTE is the next evolution of wireless communications. I have to state at the outset that as a former COO of NYNEX Mobile and one of the proponents of CDMA in the 1980s, I find that LTE is merely a natural progression of what was started almost a quarter century ago. LTE does not deliver any major technical advances, it implements them. OFDM has been around for almost fifty years in some form as has been the MIMO antenna configuration. LTE is the natural progression to an all IP fabric, a vision that Irwin Jacobs and those at Qualcomm in the 1980s had envisioned.
The authors of this book have achieved a very useful product which has a great demand. They have managed to write about LTE in a highly structured yet simple and direct manner. They cover all of the key issues at a level of detail which is perfect for those seeking to get updated as well as those who are starting out. This book is NOT a technical dissertation of LTE or wireless. If you have the expertise it fills out the edges, if you do not it will enlighten you.
The authors move through the book in a logical manner and at no point did I find them speaking down to the reader or making a presentation over simplistic. In a sense this is an overview but in a sense it is also a well composed detailing of LTE.
Unlike many of the other books I have seen on similar topics, this does not have the feel of some overused power point presentations with words interspersed. The flow of ideas is superb.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone seeking to get a feel for the details of LTE.

This book is very simplistic. It covers basic topics and not in a logical order. In other words, this is not a how-to book. I was specifically looking to gain an understanding of neworking a home computers with a broadband Internet connection. This book could offer no help and had only one paragraph on routers (which wasn't very helpful). If you are just trying to understand what a home network is about then maybe this book will be helpful, but this will not help you set up a network.

I'm a technology consultant for a Wi-Fi company, so I'm interested in books that go beyond how to set up a nice network in your home or connect to the hotspot at your local café.
I've researched quite a few books and while many offer insights into Wi-Fi, this is finally a book that offers the depth and coverage that I need.
The book covers the entire spectrum of information (pardon the pun) from the history of Wi-Fi down to the gritty details of just what a radio signal looks like, how antennae function, the nuts and bolts of the various standards, and what it really takes to roll out a secured hotspot for the home, the local café, or the business enterprise.
I especially enjoyed the insights into the entrepreneurial aspects of Wi-Fi. The book covers various business models, how the market was segmented at the time of writing, and who the players were.
The only drawback is that as a hot technology, the landscape is changing quickly. I did find that the book was dated in several areas just because it is already a few years old, and the market is changing quickly.
I do consider this a must-have on the shelf of anyone who either works with Wi-Fi or is managing projects that involve Wi-Fi, and especially those companies tapping into delivery of Wi-Fi solutions as a business model.

True, books on this type of subject are almost obsolete as fast as they get published because the field is changing so rapidly. I picked this book up for a friend and this is what he had to say:
"It is a guide to basic iPhone operation with step by step instructions for most
tasks. I don't think this is widely needed due to the iPhone being fairly intuitive or
at least consistent in design. But the book is much more explicit than the
small "manual" included with the iPhone, so some will find value.

There are a handful of interesting tips that are not obvious, but I would have
liked more. In my case, it was marginally helpful for a different reason. I did not yet
have access to an iPhone and needed to know more about it for a work-related project.
The purchase includes online access to audio and video clips. Videos can be
helpful for some things, but I'd much rather read a transcript of the audio. I
mean, I got the book, right? I can obviously read.

That said, after 2 days of various registration attempts, I was unable to
actually access the online media.

Note that Apple does have a fairly detailed user guide online and available on
the phone itself.
Suggest 3 stars as it mostly delivers what it claims."

Here is an upbeat look at future medicine. The ever cheaper cost of computing and communications promises significant improvements in telemedicine. The authors survey the possibilities.
Prominent amongst these is safety. Being able to remotely monitor elderly or others who might need urgent assistance. As the proportion of elderly increases in several countries, this affords lifestyle improvements and productivity gains.
In related ways, there are others who need regular monitoring of their health. The example of diabetics keeping an eye on their insulin levels in blood is given. Especially relevant, since diabetes has been increasing worldwide. For cases like this, the monitoring might be automatically done by instruments on the person, and then uploaded to a central location, for future analysis.
Another improvement is for a doctor to be able to diagnose a patient remotely. Or even to conduct surgery in this manner. The latter might be still fairly rare, however.

The concept of medical treatment from a distance (in absentia care) is actually quite ancient, dating back to tribal days where smoke signals were used to warn of serious disease in a community. Nowadays, telemedicine is used to facilitate treatment in rural areas, where the nearest doctor is miles away, through various forms of information technology, including videoconferencing and digital imaging. While Windows users have no problem using all the wireless gear out there, not everything is supported in Linux. Add to this the command line tools for dealing with wireless, and you have a recipe for confusion. "Linux Unwired" demystifies the Linux Wireless system, and provides guidance for purchasers to make sure that they buy the most supported equipment possible.
It should be noted early on that 802.11b is not the only thing covered in the book. The other variants (a and g) are there, in addition to IRDA (infrared), Bluetooth, and Data over Cellular. On the latter point, much of the content deals with US based providers, but it still provides a good backing on the subject for those of us outside the country.
802.11b is the main focus, taking up around half the book. It starts with a discussion of the chipsets behind the cards, and how the map to Linux support. Here is where the reader gets advice on which card to buy, or at least what to look out for when buying a card. One thing I found interesting was the WLAN driver loader, which is an inexpensive product that lets Linux load binary WLAN modules. Some cards are not supported enough in Linux to do things like WEP security, which is where this product comes in. Again, the book leads the reader around the situations when this is necessary and when it isn't.
In addition to WEP, other methods of authentication are covered such as 802.1x authentication and 802.11i, the successor to WEP. It's also a good example of the broad scope of the book and a focus on interoperability with existing systems, rather than assuming the reader is building everything from the ground up.
Access points take up two chapters, the first looking at how to use them with Linux. Before reading this book, I was under the impression that access points all used web browsers or telnet for configuration, but apparently some need Windows software. There are situations where people have developed software to emulate this functionality, and pointers are provided. The second of the two chapters is on building your own access point, which is a fascinating look at using micro-linux distributions and mini-x86 hardware to build access points with rich functionality (for those less adventurous or well funded, the same can be done with any old hardware). There is also a look at soldering on a serial port to a popular Linksys router to allow command line access to the underlying Linux OS.
Bluetooth and IRDA are less common uses of wireless that let computers speak to phones and PDAs. I was completely unaware of the level of support that existed in Linux until after I read these chapters. While the Bluetooth coverage was comprehensive, it went to a deeper level of detail than I thought necessary, such as a detailed breakdown of the Bluetooth stack of protocols. However, at the end, it is possible to use Bluetooth and IRDA to pull data from devices, and to connect to their resources (ie modems and databases) over the air.
I should also mention the chapter on GPS. It is fairly thin on its own, but as an addition to the 802.11b section (ie wardriving), it does well.
A couple of things stood out about this book. The first is that the target audience isn't necessarily Linux geeks, but Linux users. You don't have to be a Linux guru to get this stuff running, the level of detail is sufficient to get anyone who isn't scared of a command line up and running. The second is that the authors spent a lot of time testing various hardware. Many wireless cards and Linux distributions were tested in the early chapters. Where several options for software existed, they were all looked at (such as the source vs binary drivers mentioned above). This all adds to the book's value not only as a howto manual for wireless, but also as a guide for navigating through product and software selection.
"Linux Unwired" is perfect for anyone who wants to use wireless on Linux, be it connecting to an 802.11b network, or trying to use a cell phone to send a fax. Those looking to purchase equipment will want to go through the book first to make use of the product advice and compatibility testing.

This is one of the best organized and illustrated technical books on universal mobile telecommunications system - UMTS. It explains how this WCDMA, HSPA, and LTE system is packet based and is significantly different than its GSM and GPRS predecessors. There are good descriptions of key network elements including Node B (base stations), radio network controllers - RNC, subscriber databases - HLR and VLR, circuit switched gateways - GMSC, packet switched gateways/service nodes - GGSN. The book explains the physical and logical channel structures, their operation, and their relationships with each other (there are many channel configuration options). If you need a good technical understanding of WCDMA/UMTS, HSPA, and LTE radio access technology and system elements, this is a great book.

The Preface of the book talks about the offering that the author's firm is providing. I believe the book is just another sales tool for the author's consulting firm. It's filled with a lot of information that are irrelevent of (Wi-Fi) security. It poses a lot of questions without giving you the specific answers or solutions. Just take a look at the paragraphs under title "Building a Private Wireless Infrastructure" (bottom of page 88) and see if you can get what you expect from the title. I think this book is only good for either junior high school kids who like to know more about IT buzz words or those high-level executives who love to pay big money for thousand of words (not works) from the so-called consultants (It's not a coincident that the author's firm is called Executive Information Service).

I never wrote any review before. But after reading this book, I feel like writing one to warn other potential buyers against buying this book. I think the author has good marketing sense for himself. He sensed that there is a market for a wimax book and he went ahead writing one, although he doesn't really has the insight/expertise on wimax to deliver a good one. He also cleverly positioned this book as more on Wimax business than technology. I guessed I fell into the trap and bought this book, only to be disppointed by it. The author wrote many crash course books on other topics. I would take it as evidence in support of my judgment above: he is not a real expert on any of these topics (how can one be an expert of so many topics?), but is good at pushing out books that people may be interested in.
As an example: this book has 339 pages, of which 102 pages are acronyms, glossary, and index. Another 95 pages are list of companies in the wimax forum and what these companies do. Can you image - about 60% of the book requires no/mimimal insight/expertise to write.

The resource kit for R2 is very similar to the R1 version - it is a very technical reference on the servers, roles, services, ports and communications mechanisms to the latest version of OCS. In that, it is written for those with on-hand experience with Microsoft server OS deployments such as Server 2003 and Server 2008. This book is not a book for beginners on OCS. In my opionion, there isn't a good written published reference for beginners - stick with the Microsoft white papers and TechNet articles. If your job is to design, architect OCS R2, this book is very valuable and will provide the process and procedures for completing your design. Deployment tasks are treated a little more lightly; while they are covered, the specific task-by-task details are not provided. That, again, is left to the white papers Microsoft has written well on the subject. As far as migration from OCS R1 to R2, the pages covered are from 659 to 662. Only a few pages - but the process to migrate is depicted in the pages. Migration from LCS or OCS R1 is a coexistence process as you will likely deploy OCS R2 on net-new hardware along side the existing legacy product. This allows easy migration by simply associating the legacy SIP-enabled users to the new system.
This reference is well worth the purchase price. This, along with the Microsoft-provided technical references will steer you in the right direction for OCS R2.

This book with it's 9 chapters and 3 case studies covers every aspect of Mobile Technologies as applied to business. These include the economic, technical, process and social dimensions of Mobile Business. The book clearly embodies a healthy combination of solid research and hands-on practice. As the CEO of a Company that provides technology to the enterprise that crosses Mobility, I've found this to be a great practical and strategic read. It dissects 3G, starting with principles to provide an anchor.
The table of contents shows the progression in which the author deals with 3G as a collection of components, principles and protocols: Principles of Division Multiple Access, WCDMA Air Interface: Physical Layer, Modulation Techniques and Spread Spectrum, Spreading Codes, Channel Coding, WCDMA Air Interface: Protocol Stack. Because of the technical nature of this book and the level of detail given, it's best suited for readers who are familiar with the technical underpinnings of TDMA, CDMA or GSM. If you are looking for engineering details this is the wrong book. If you have a background in related technologies and want to quickly get up-to-speed in 3G this is an excellent resource.

This is indeed written in a clear understandable style that takes you from the problem to the proposed solution in an understandable progression. It is the only book I've found on the subject that I would recommend, and I've read them all. Working as an engineer on the system he briefly gives as an example, it is the book I recommend to all our engineers getting involved in Mobile IP for the first time. The book is not an easy read. Let me say that right up front. In part due to the inherent complexity of SIP. And the fact that when you try to use it in tandem with other protocols and products, the complexity increases.
However if you persevere, it may be worthwhile. SIP's main usage in the marketplace seems to be as one of the enabling underlayers of VoIP. And VoIP is growing strongly, due to the allure of free long distance calls.
Not that you are necessarily restricted to VoIP. Another advantage of the book is its delineation of various other applications that also use SIP.
