The extensive features in Apple's newest creation, the "magical" iPad, deserve this new book in The Missing Manual series. In addition to its paperback version, iPad: The Missing Manual is available from the publisher, O'Reilly, in four different electronic media versions including ePub. This reviewer downloaded the ePub version to the iPad in order to read it there while exploring the very device it described.
A veteran author of books in The Missing Manual series, Biersdorfer, a New York Times tech columnist, provides clear, detailed explanations and helpful illustrations of the iPad's many features in a very readable, often entertaining way.
Experienced Apple users and iPhone users will find much of the text very elementary (e.g., "Turn the iPad On and Off" and "Find the Home Button," in Chapter One). The five chapters devoted to the multi-media iPod functions of the iPad, music, videos, audiobooks, podcasts, photos and the newest addition, books, will be very helpful to those who come to the iPad without any prior experience with Apple products. But for those who have used a Mac, an iPod or an iPhone even for a short time, they seem superfluous. Not only do all these Apple devices have an easy and intuitive user interface, but also they are similar.
Justifiably, an entire chapter is devoted to the newest feature on any Apple device, books. Helpful sections on how to find books in the new iBookstore and elsewhere, ways to make the reading experience pleasant (changing font size, searching within a book, using bookmarks, etc.) are included in Chapter 8.
Owners who rely on the iPad as a productivity tool will welcome the chapters on email, the internet, and the iWork apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote). There are many useful explanations and tips such as "all the programs in the iWork suite can export files as PDF documents [and] can export files in their native iWork formats...[but] although Pages can export to the native Microsoft Word .doc format, Numbers and Keynote can't export their contents as Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint files. Yet, anyway." Important information to know--and not obvious.
A very helpful feature of the ebook version of iPad: The Missing Manual is that tapping on any entry in the Table of Contents and/or the Index takes the reader immediately to that precise point in the book.
iPad: The Missing Manual will be most valuable to those with little or no previous Apple device experience. Nonetheless, even those who have used Apple products for years will find insights and tidbits that make using the iPad a more productive and pleasurable experience.

D. Biersdorfer To see the pictures you synced from your computer, tap the Photos icon on the iPad's Home screen. Then tap the Photos button at the top of the screen to see your pictures in thumbnail view, filling the iPad screen in a grid. If you chose to copy over specific photo albums, tap the name of the album you want to look at. Mac syncers can also tap the Events, Faces, or Places button to see photos sorted in those categories, as page xx explains. On the thumbnails screen, you can do several things:
Tap a photo thumbnail to see it full-size on the iPad screen.
Double-tap an open photo to magnify it.
Spread and pinch your fingers on-screen (those fancy moves described in Chapter 2) to zoom in and out of a photo. Drag your finger around on-screen to pan through a zoomed-in photo.
Flick your finger horizontally across the screen in either direction to scroll through your pictures at high speeds. You can show off your vacation photos really fast this way (your friends will thank you).
Rotate the iPad to have horizontal photos fill the width of the screen or to have vertical photos fill its height.
With a photo open, tap the iPad's glass to display a strip of itsy-bitsy thumbnails of all the photos in the current album at the bottom of the screen. Tap or slide to a thumbnail to jump to a particular picture.

When you tap the ^ icon in the menu bar, you can set a photo as wallpaper, assign a picture to your iPad's Contact's program, send a pic to MobileMe, or start a photo slideshow. To get back to your library, tap the Photos or album-name button at the top of the screen.
Email Photos If you want to share your photographic joy, you can email one or a bunch of pictures right from the Photos program:
One photo. To email the photo currently on-screen, tap the iPad's glass to make the photo controls appear, and then tap the ^ icon in the upper-right corner. Tap the Email Photo button. The mail program attaches the photo to a new message, ready for you to address.
Multiple photos. To email a bunch of pictures at once, tap open the album containing the photos. Tap the ^ icon in the top-right corner and then tap the pictures you want to send (blue checkmarks appear in the corner of the thumbnails to show you've selected them). Tap the Email button to attach them to a new message. If you have a draft message in progress, tap the Copy button, then switch to the mail program, open your message, and hold down your finger until the Paste button appears. Tap it to paste in the pictures.
Delete Photos You have two ways to delete photos from your iPad. If you synced photo albums from iTunes, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes, hit the Photos tab, and turn off the checkboxes by those albums. Click Apply and then Sync to 'unsync," or remove, those pix from the iPad's gallery.
If you have pictures in your Saved Photos album you want to ditch, you can delete a currently open picture by tapping the T icon and then tapping the Delete Photo button. To delete multiple pictures from the Saved Photos thumbnail view, tap the ^ icon, then tap the unwanted pictures to assign the Blue Checkmarks of Selection. Tap the small red Delete button on the top-left side of the menu bar. There's a blue Cancel button on the other side of the menu bar if you change your mind.

The Droid X is one of the latest smart phones to use Google's Android Operating System (OS). While I love Google's products, they're not the most user friendly, especially when it comes to super technical devices. This is where Droid X The Missing Manual comes in. It covers in detail all the major features of the phone including calling, texting, web, apps, maps, calendars and much more. Preston tells you what to press and when to press it, including what issues you may have along the way. Unless you are extremely tech savvy and happy to make mistakes, this book is a wise purchase and a time saver.
However, this book comes to market relatively late for a phone that has been out for 8 months. By now many people (including myself) have muddled their way through Droid's various features. If you've had the phone for more than 3-4 months then much of the information will be redundant to you. I found the most helpful sections to be the tip boxes, often finding quicker ways to perform day to day tasks, while the bulk of the text reaffirmed my experiences. I can highly recommend this book for new users, less so for the Droid initiated.

This is one of the best organized and illustrated technical books on universal mobile telecommunications system - UMTS. It explains how this WCDMA, HSPA, and LTE system is packet based and is significantly different than its GSM and GPRS predecessors. There are good descriptions of key network elements including Node B (base stations), radio network controllers - RNC, subscriber databases - HLR and VLR, circuit switched gateways - GMSC, packet switched gateways/service nodes - GGSN. The book explains the physical and logical channel structures, their operation, and their relationships with each other (there are many channel configuration options). If you need a good technical understanding of WCDMA/UMTS, HSPA, and LTE radio access technology and system elements, this is a great book.

This book is a systematic look at 3G's component parts and underlying technologies. It is not an engineering text in that there are no formulae or engineering details with respect to signalling, capacity or performance (even though network planning considerations are addressed).
It dissects 3G, starting with principles to provide an anchor.
The table of contents shows the progression in which the author deals with 3G as a collection of components, principles and protocols: Principles of Division Multiple Access, WCDMA Air Interface: Physical Layer, Modulation Techniques and Spread Spectrum, Spreading Codes, Channel Coding, WCDMA Air Interface: Protocol Stack. Network, Network Planning, Network Management, Procedures, New Concepts in the UMTS Network, 3G Services, and 3G Applications.
Because of the technical nature of this book and the level of detail given, it's best suited for readers who are familiar with the technical underpinnings of TDMA, CDMA or GSM. The writing is clear and augmented by numerous illustrations, and each chapter ends with a list of references. The references are a strong point about this book because they are up-to-date and include books, papers and URLs.
If you are looking for engineering details this is the wrong book. If you have a background in related technologies and want to quickly get up-to-speed in 3G this is an excellent resource.

This book about GSM is a very clearly written and yet concisely written. Its true that this book of such a small size cannot substitute for reading the standards. However for the purposes of getting a system point of view ,understanding the Access side protocol stack this book is very good.
Especially the chapter on Physical Layer is so concise and yet covers almost everything you might want to know about Physical Layer.
Highly recommended.

This book is up to my expectations. Most of the books on 3G overemphasize the radio access part and underemphasize the other aspects like UMTS Terminal, Core Networks, Interfacing with External Networks, Services, Appilcations etc., in their coverage. This book deals with all these aspects on equal priority basis. The depth of the details is neither at high level nor at low level. It is just at right level and for people who are eager to enhance their knowledge on 3G, I recommend this book as worth having. The only missing part I felt in this book is OSS systems for 3G.

This book was one of the earliest books on LTE, the new cellular wireless standard that is expected to be commonplace in the next few years. This book is very good for people interested in learning about LTE from a systems architecture standpoint. It covers the EPS and SAE aspects of the system. It explains about the evolved packet core which is integral to the LTE system and also the newer and simpler network elements that constitute the overall LTE eco-system. For those interested in obtaining a deeper understanding of the protocol changes and such, I would recommend the following book by Erik Dahlman titled 3G Evolution, Second Edition: HSPA and LTE for Mobile Broadband.

Prior to the review, i would like to mention that i have over 6 years of experience in Wireless core network Product validation in GSM/UMTS; also i had read another book "UMTS" by "Javier Sanchez" & "Mamadou Thioune". Therefore i had a fair handle on the architecture and aspects of UMTS access, but my understanding was lacking a solid grounding.
I picked up this book and started reading, and it was like all the missing pieces were found, and my understanding stood on a more solid ground. To give a few examples,the coverage of the following things in the second chapte,were pivotal in plugging the gaps in my understanding.
- how to differtiate a UE in uplink as well as downlink
- principles of WCDMA physical layer - channelization & scrambling codes,soft handover,use of compressed mode & power management. These are known by any person who has a "more than casual" study of the UMTS access, but they were clearly marked as differtiators.
- Radio and data connections
- UMTS security architecture etc
What clinches the deal for me is Chapter 3 with its clear explanations of single user spreading code use, multi-user spreading code use(to mention a few) with clear diagrammatic illustrations.
The author has distilled years of experience in this book; any user who is suffciently experieced in wireless networks can pick this book up and glide across from beginning to end
This book caters to R99 UMTS networks;the only thing i wish this book had was the coverage of newer technologies - HSDPA, HSUPA and LTE.

I bought this book sometime ago because I thought that the author's previous book was well written, however I never found time to read it thoroughly.
Over past few months, I discovered that I kept going back to the book and the author's blog to look for reference (e.g. to get a better understanding on SIM card, or to calculate spectrum efficiency and cell capacity, etc.). So I decided to bring this book with me on a trip and finally read the whole book (well... almost). I have to say this is another very well written book from the author. The writing is very clear and the figures show up at where they are needed, nothing fancy, dry, or redundant. Just enough text and figures to cover the topic and I never had to re-read a section to understand the subject (like I usually do when reading a 3GPP standard).
What I liked the most about this book is that the selected areas that the author chose to dive into reflected not only his thorough understanding of the standard, but also his obvious hands-on experience. This book was not only well comprehensible, but also practical, an excellent reference to have at your desk for a wireless engineer. I look forward to read future publications from the author, either at his blog or a new book.

I am an RF Engineer, tasked with optimizing the radio link between the phone and the tower (or in LTE terminology, the User Equipment and e-Node B). Admittedly, this is the first BOOK about LTE I have read. Without other perspective, I give it a 3 star rating because of how useful it will be to me in my role. This is a great reference text for LTE--detailed as it is--on the background considerations and ALL the possibilities and thought that went into the LTE standard, but it's really over my head! It has little information, probably quite understandably, about vendor implementation and how to solve practical issues. What I needed to learn from the book could be reduced to 50 pages instead of 383, that's why I'll keep it on my shelf as a reference text, just in case. But otherwise I've taken extensive notes, which is really all I need.
The author(s) is a good teacher; he keeps re-expressing relevant points previously covered at the appropriate time in each lesson, and gives good summaries at the end of each chapter. The book is thoroughly indexed, and the text of each chapter points the reader to where other matters are more fully explained in other chapters/sections. Though it has a very useful list of acronyms, about 10 important acronyms are not on the list (an oversight by the editors). But the book could really benefit (I could really benefit) from also having a glossary, it would be worth extending the page count to 400. I suggest others on my level take advantage of the authors pedagogical style and the book's index in the following manner: start with the summary at the end of each chapter and if you see something you want to dig into, then go into the chapter for more details or use the index to find the actual lesson. By this means you can extract the most information with the least investment of time. Not all books are written well enough to use (or trust) this method to cover the material. This one is.

As the author indicates at the beginning of the book, "From GSM to LTE" provides a comprehensive overview of this evolution of modern wireless technologies, in a single concise but comprehensive format accessible to anyone with a prior background in communications theory. It is a plus that the author avoids the mathematics behind these standards, instead focusing on the "how and why" of all the technical components of GSM, GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/UMTS, and LTE, without going into the mind-numbing detail of the actual technical standards, which are nonetheless cited for those who wish to refer to them to actually implement these technologies. The book also has chapters on IEEE 802.16 (WiMax), IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n (WLAN), and Bluetooth, but I have not yet read them.

The title suggests that it would be a design book but the book is short on implementation details. Bulk of the book covers GSM. I expected it to have more WCDMA coverage, implementation schemes and design trade offs. Another issue is that book has spelling mistakes and does not appear to be proof read very well.

As a newcomer to standardisation work, this book has proven invaluable and my only regret is that it wasn't available when I first started work on LTE about a year ago. The book has saved me hours of tedious scouring of standards text. In this respect it is valuable both for people who are in telcos management and need an overview of LTE, as well as standards engineers who are well acquainted with the topic as it will prepare them for a more in-depth look into LTE.
Some highlights include:
1. A great introductory overview of the evolution to 4G, impartial and technically sound.
2. An in-depth analysis of the physical layer of LTE. The details include state-of-the-art simulation results and highlight the technical achievements that make the promised transfer rates and quality of service possible. The results are preceded by background theory. I found the parts on OFDM and MIMO as key enablers particularly succinct and useful. Some abstract terms, such as the notion of control channels and antenna ports, are explained in a lucid and easy-to-follow way, showing you not just what LTE mandates, but also why it is designed the way it is and what the engineering drivers behind it are.
3. An overview of higher layers, more than enough to understand how the layered paradigm is implemented in LTE.
4. The consistency of the book throughout. In my opinion you rarely see books with so many contributing authors that flow as well as this one does. Clearly, a lot of effort went into maintaining a unified style and approach, and it was well worth it.
The editors-authors are active contributors to 3GPP standardisation, and so are most of the contributing authors (with some input from academia), representing many different companies. The book therefore has a unique quality of being impartial while coming straight from the source. While only a couple of pages long, the final chapter examines the future evolution of LTE: LTE-Advanced. Thoroughly recommended.
