Bluetooth: Connect Without Cables Review

Bluetooth: Connect Without Cables
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
'Bluetooth Connect without Cables' came about from a conversation in a Hotel bar following the completion of the first day of client training in our Bluetooth solution. We had spent a whole day talking and presenting and hadn't said a single word about our implementation yet! Why?, well Bluetooth was so new that nobody knew much about it, there were no text books, no courses, nothing but that thick specification document and a few white papers. So before we could begin to explain the fine details of what we'd done, we had to explain the Bluetooth specification.
After a couple of beers we had a contents page for a complete study of the Bluetooth specification covering all the additional areas that anyone implementing, selling or managing a Bluetooth product might want. We then just had to write it !
What we wound up with was the book that we had wanted to see when we first started working in Bluetooth space. Something that would give us an easy introduction, then go into enough detail that we knew how to really use Bluetooth. We put in summaries that can be read in isolation for those wanting to skip sections, and lots of diagrams and examples for those wanting to go into all the fine details.
The Bluetooth specification uses many other standards, but does not quote them, so somebody trying to get an all round understanding of Bluetooth also needs to look at: * GSM TS07.10 * OBEX * WAP * PPP * SAFER+ * Q.931 We had to hunt down diverse sources, then wade through irrelevant detail to pick out the few nuggets that are used in Bluetooth. What we really wanted was one source that just explained the relevant parts. It didn't exist, so we wrote it.
We also explain in detail other things that the Bluetooth specification either skips over or omits entirely, for example: * how to generate the UUIDs used to describe Bluetooth services * how the CVSD codec works * how to manage Bluetooth devices * a discussion of how to implement a Bluetooth system
In conferences, mailing lists, even general conversation with clients and competitors we found that people were asking questions about Bluetooth that went beyond the technical details. So we added chapters putting Bluetooth in context, covering the market for Bluetooth, other related wireless technologies, and the future of the specification.
"Bluetooth Connect without cables" is the only available source which brings together all this material in one place.

Bluetooth Application Programming with the Java APIs Essentials Edition (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Networking) Review

Bluetooth Application Programming with the Java APIs Essentials Edition (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Networking)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although it doesn't say so on the cover, this is actually a second edition of a book by the same name and the same authors. The first edition was good, but this technology moves quickly and a new edition was needed. There is plenty of practical instruction and lots of helpful figures in the book which, quite honesty, is often lacking in books published by Morgan Kaufmann - they tend to be a bit on the academic side. Plus the book has a website where there is plenty of additional code plus the javex.bluetooth and java.obex packages available for download. Also note that the old edition of the book has about two hundred more pages than this new edition. That's because much of what was previously in the book has been moved to the website, primarily code. The following is the table of contents for the new edition:
Ch 1: Introduction
Ch 2: An Overview of JABWT
Ch 3: High Level Architecture
Ch 4: RFCOMM
Ch 5: OBEX
Ch 6: Device Discovery
Ch 7: Service Discovery
Ch 8: L2CAP
Ch 9: Bluetooth and the Push Registry
Just because some of the chapter titles are the same doesn't mean the content is the same. Everything has been updated and so far it looks like a worthwhile purchase.

This book about GSM is a very clearly written and yet concisely written. Its true that this book of such a small size cannot substitute for reading the standards. However for the purposes of getting a system point of view ,understanding the Access side protocol stack this book is very good.
Especially the chapter on Physical Layer is so concise and yet covers almost everything you might want to know about Physical Layer.
Highly recommended.

Bluetooth For Java Review

Bluetooth For Java
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bluetooth is a short range (max range of 30-300 feet) wireless communications protocol. JSR-82 is a Bluetooth API for Java that allows Bluetooth enabled devices talk to each other using the Java programs. Using Bluetooth, a PDA could talk to a printer and ask for a document to be printed or two Bluetooth enabled PDAs could exchange Java objects. Even if you know nothing about Bluetooth or wireless communications, this book will give you enough information to get started.
The book starts with an examination of Bluetooth and the terminology you need to know to understand Bluetooth enabled devices. It then gets into the basics of the Bluetooth API for Java and developing programs using J2ME MIDP. Chapters cover creating a Bluetooth print server, passing objects between Bluetooth devices, and securing messages between devices. The authors discuss the PC software available to simulate two Bluetooth devices talking to each other so that you can develop an application without having two Bluetooth devices sitting on your desk. The final chapters covers topics such as Jini and Ericsson BlipNet. The book contains many well commented code samples demonstrating how to use the Bluetooth API.
The book is very clear and concise. The book reads as if it was written by a couple of enthusiastic Bluetooth developers anxious to share the technology. And they do an excellent job of doing exactly that. The book is well written and interesting. I started the book knowing almost nothing about Bluetooth but now I feel confident that I can develop Bluetooth applications. If you have any interest in Bluetooth then I can recommend this book as an excellent resource.

From GSM to LTE: An Introduction to Mobile Networks and Mobile Broadband Review

From GSM to LTE: An Introduction to Mobile Networks and Mobile Broadband
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As the author indicates at the beginning of the book, "From GSM to LTE" provides a comprehensive overview of this evolution of modern wireless technologies, in a single concise but comprehensive format accessible to anyone with a prior background in communications theory. It is a plus that the author avoids the mathematics behind these standards, instead focusing on the "how and why" of all the technical components of GSM, GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/UMTS, and LTE, without going into the mind-numbing detail of the actual technical standards, which are nonetheless cited for those who wish to refer to them to actually implement these technologies. The book also has chapters on IEEE 802.16 (WiMax), IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n (WLAN), and Bluetooth, but I have not yet read them.

I just passed the Wireless# test today with a really good score. Before taking the test, I read every page of this book. It also has very good questions (with answers explained) at the end of each chapter. If you have a desire to work in the wireless field, but have no real experience yet, the chapters on wireless security, installation, troubleshooting and optimization really give you a head start towards that experience!
Sure you can find a study guide that will just barely give you enough information to pass the test. If you would rather have more information behind the meat, this book is for you. Some of this material was new to me, so I wanted to really know the subjects before taking the test. Besides, this book is the official study guide for the Wireless# test by the CWNP program.
This book (and certification) really is a mile wide and a couple of inches deep. Great place to start in the wireless field. After that, you're really set to start with your CWNA study and test. Now you're getting into a subject that is only a half mile wide, and many more feet deep. CWSP is even smaller but much deeper.
Good luck and have fun!

I found this to be a expectedly well-written book for one covering a technical subject so well. It is written from the perspective of insider-engineers who were hands on in the development of the Bluetooth wireless specification. I found the background, development history and methodology particularly facinating. The technical components of the specification are laid out in a logical sequence and the book is written in an easy to understand manner and with the intention that the reader understands the technology. These are obviously not guys off in some Ivory Tower, but rather they are highly skilled engineers who are willing and able to speak with those of us who are not so deep into the technology. Highly recommended.

"Essentials of Short-Range Wireless" is an excellent summary of short-range wireless technologies, an area of rapidly growing importance within electronic product design and engineering.
The book manages to be both concise and extremely informative, and is written in a very easy-to-read style which is well-suited for professionals either with engineering degrees or with non-technical backgrounds.
The book provides the best summary of wireless architecture and parameters which I have seen, as well as a deeper analysis and comparison of the Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11/Wi-Fi, IEEE 802.15.4/Zigbee, and Bluetooth low energy wireless standards.
In addition, the book provides a great deal of practical information on implementing a wireless solution, as well as a description of the key product applications and emerging markets for short-range wireless technologies.
I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in wireless product design. Nick Hunn has done the field a great service by writing a guide as compact, useful and descriptive as "Essentials of Short-Range Wireless".

A book for the communications engineer who has to build in roaming on a cellular network. How GSM and GPRS permit this is explained in detail. The protocols and structure of messages sent is laid out. If you have dealt with TCP/IP, then some of the ideas will be familiar.
3G networks are also covered. Somewhat newer. But the roaming descriptions suggest a capability comparable to those under GSM and GPRS.

Wireless Home Networking For Dummies, 3rd Edition Review

Wireless Home Networking For Dummies, 3rd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read this out of curiosity and found it to be a decent little introduction to wireless for non-networking people.
Do get the second edition as it is updated and it had the router I have been using.
The first part of the book deals with an introduction to wireless home networking, 802.11a, g, b and Bluetooth networks. There is even a little explanation to where the Bluetooth name comes from.
The sections about configuring your PCs and Macs is pretty basic and it should be pretty easy to use as support material if you are trying to hook one up to the network.
There is a section about internetworking sharing but I am wondering if people even need to do that considering the price of routers these days.
There remaining sections dealt with using and securing the wireless network. The security stuff is written well for the beginner who doesn't want to become a master of security. It explains what is involved and what it needed to set up. However, it keeps it high level as to not completely bore a person who is not interested in this stuff(ie encryption theory). In particular a gaming and a home entertainment system. There was an example of a connected jacuzzi which only costs twelve thousand dollars. :)
Other examples included a phone, a refrigerator, chipping your pets and children. The last part seems like a good idea these days but I wonder the "big brother" implications it would present.
Some of the sites mentioned in the book are interesting. I never heard of netstumbler and have found it useful.
There is always the Part of Tens section and it's ok. Nothing new for me this time.
Overall; it's a decent little book for a noob wanting to grasp the concepts of wireless networking and what is involved with running one.
