ScreenOS Cookbook Review

ScreenOS Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Simply put, anyone who is currently evaluating or managing ScreenOS based Firewalls should own this book and have it close by.
The 1st chapter of the book alone shows the most useful commands that every administrator needs to know. It also details the architecture of ScreenOS which is the key to creating and implementing a relevant security policy in any network.
The book is well written and organized with CLI commands in bold and CLI responses in plain text which make it easy to differentiate what the user should be typing and what they should be seeing. (There are also some GUI screen shots in the book as well.) The book has excellent examples of packet walks, O.S. Architecture, and network diagrams.
A huge benefit of the book is that it doesn't bore the user with the history of the Internet or TCP/IP, etc. It jumps right in to specific examples and configuration guidelines relevant to what the chapter is trying to cover. The book is also very current and covers almost the latest version of ScreenOS. A great example is that there is an excellent chapter on configuring NSRP (HA) with Dynamic Routing Protocols (to sync routes from DRP's) and how that is configured in ScreenOS 6.0 which was the first release to support that feature. ScreenOS 6.0 is a very current release of ScreenOS.
As a user of ScreenOS for 5 years, I can absolutely say this book will be a welcome addition to my library!
Last note: Chapter 21 covers VSYS or Virtual Systems which is a major strength of ScreenOS and not well understood by many users. That chapter alone makes the book worth the cost.

Windows Small Business Server 2011 Administrator's Companion Review

Windows Small Business Server 2011 Administrator's Companion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Charlie Russel and Sharon Crawford have been putting out the gold standard in Small Business Server books since the first version of SBS shipped in the late 1990's. This latest effort is as comprehensive and accurate as their previous SBS titles, including not only direct information about installing and operating SBS, but also topics such as planning, security, migration, Hyper-V, data protection, and many others.
This book will save many SBS users from having to buy other books for related functions. For example, there are chapters on subjects like Group Policy, customizing SharePoint, and adding a Terminal Server. The authors' real world, hands-on experience in planning, implementing, and managing Small Business Server networks is clear in every chapter. Not limited to just the Small Business Server itself, this book gives the knowledge needed to manage every part of the small business's back office infrastructure.
This book is a valuable reference for anyone deploying Small Business Server Standard 2011, with or without the Premium Add-On, which is also covered in depth. I wouldn't be without it.

I am an MCSE NT4 that has had a 4 1/2 year hiatus from IT work. My first read through an A+ book was in 1998 which was comparatively a bland textbook read. Myers has done a nice job with this book, even entertaining on occasion. I am quickly getting caught up on areas I missed. It is very unfortunate the CompTIA group can't seem to connect with Microsoft on their timing of OS releases. It would be nice to have Windows 7 addressed in this book.

Build Your Own Wi-Fi Network (Build Your Own...(McGraw)) Review

Build Your Own Wi-Fi Network (Build Your Own...(McGraw))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The popularity of the wireless networking of personal computers is rapidly growing, especially for laptop users. Wireless networking goes by several monikers; Apple calls it AirPort, many PC manufacturers call it Wi-Fi, and techies refer to its official name of 802.11b. Most business oriented hotels, and airport frequent-flyer lounges now provide Wi-Fi access, and boutique coffee shops are adding wireless networking to attract and keep customers.
If you want to share your Internet access at home between several computers, be they Macs or Windows machines, wireless networking is becoming more and more affordable. But there is often more to this technology than meets the eye. I have a Mac; do I have to buy Apple-branded equipment? What access point (the Base Station, in Apple-speak) do you buy? What wireless card do you buy? What about security?
Shelley Brisbin's Build Your Own Wi-Fi Network is aimed at end users wanting to learn more than just the basics of how to get your Wi-Fi up and running. Brisbin's extensive experience authoring computer books and articles (nine books and many articles) helps her to thoroughly cover the subject.
Will this book be useful to the average Macintosh owner who wants to go wireless, be it with Apple's AirPort equipment, or third-party hardware? At first glance, the distinctly Windows orientation of the book appeared to make it less-than-useful to Mac users. But Brisbin is careful to be fairly platform agnostic; each section includes Mac information. Since many wireless routers are configured via a web browser, the screen shots are perfectly useful to Mac users. Ironically, Apple's own AirPort Base Station is one of the few wireless access points not configured via a web browser!
If all you want is a quick and dirty overview of wireless networking, Build Your Own Wi-Fi Network may be a bit much. But if you want a basic grasp of the fundamentals of how 802.11b works, without being overwhelmed with too much information, Brisbin provides it. She is able to walk that fine line between too much and not enough detail. All aspects of wireless are covered, including sections on antennas, multiple access points, wireless-to-wired networking issues, and many more.
Build Your Own Wi-Fi Network covers what to look for in both access points, and wireless cards. Several brands are discussed. This kind of information is platform agnostic, so don't let the Windows screenshots and references dissuade you.
Brisbin devotes plenty of time to discuss wireless networking security in detail. Many wireless users are not aware of how exposed their networks can be. Even if they do, they don't know how to decide how much security to implement. The chapters on security are very valuable, and every purchaser of this book should read this section carefully. You may be more exposed than you think! Again, the information Brisbin provides is fully applicable to Macintosh users.
If you want a thorough grounding in wireless networking fundamentals, this book should be high on your list.
MacMice Rating: 4 out of 5

Digital Interactive TV and Metadata: Future Broadcast Multimedia (Signals and Communication Technology) Review

Digital Interactive TV and Metadata: Future Broadcast Multimedia (Signals and Communication Technology)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

One way to determine the level of growth of a research field is to assess the availability of relevant conferences, journals and books. In particular, the latter is a good measure of the maturity of the field, since they provide an overview of a critical mass of published work. In the interactive TV field, there been more than a few conferences and special issues in journals, but books are still scarce. So, it was a pleasant surprise to discover the book "Digital Interactive TV and Metadata", which was written by a very active team of researchers from the Digital Media Institute at the Tampere University of Technology, in Finland.
The first part of the book (Theory) begins with a short overview of DTV standards and the respective applications types that are enabled by this basic set of industry standards. Next, the book surveys the fields of Web, multimedia, DTV, in order to provide an extensive overview of metadata standards, which is the core focus of this work. Having laid the background theory, the authors present the "Digital Broadcast Item Model", which they have helped define, in the context of the MPEG21 standard. The first part of the book closes with a discussion of the implementation requirements for metadata in DTV systems.
The second part of the book (Application) begins with an interdisciplinary analysis of DTV in the fields of business strategy, consumer behaviour and narrative, all of which are put in a metadata context at the end of the chapter. Next, the authors describe the application of metadata in several DTV fields, such as digital rights management, production, interactive TV content, and personalization. The book closes with a discussion of a few innovative applications and future scenarios for DTV.
Overall, it is a rather accessible technical book for DTV and metadata. It is suitable for researchers and developers of DTV systems. In a field that is in constant growth it would have run the risk of missing recent developments, but the book is coupled with a web site that offers additional and up-to-date information (http://www.digitalbroadcastitem.tv/). Moreover, the website offers complementary slides, handouts and exercises that can be used for teaching a DTV and metadata module in university programs.

The Book of Wi-Fi: Install, Configure, and Use 802.11B Wireless Networking Review

The Book of Wi-Fi: Install, Configure, and Use 802.11B Wireless Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What I liked a lot about this book besides the wealth of information presented in a concise form was also its (at times) informal approach to the topic. The author places himself in the shoes of the average person struggling to set up their own wireless network in either a business or home situation.
The book's first chapter describes how "wi-fi" works, and the next chapter explains the "materials" you need to set up a wireless network. The next couple of chapters describe how to install network access points and interfaces. Since I have some knowledge of LAN's, I was able to see the "comparisons" between conventional networks and wireless. I'm assuming that was what the author had in mind while writing the book.
He also talks about extending your wireless network, guerilla (ie "illegal") networking. and security for wireless networks. I was glad to see that chapter, as I had heard it could be relatively easy to "interrupt" network traffic, as well as breaking into a wireless network illegally. While the author points out no wi-fi network will ever be 100% safe, better to be safe than sorry. And last but not least, the book's final chapter is on troubleshooting your network.
I found this book to be a great introduction to wireless networks.

Generally a good overview of technologies available to wireless developers today, including WAP, Bluetooth, GPRS and 3G. As other reviewers have stated, the scope of the book is rather broad, so there is surface coverage of lots of issues.
However, there is a hidden gem in this book, Chapter 8. This chapter delves into the theory of wireless application development and presents some good foundational strategy for dealing with packet loss, discontinuous service, security holes, and so on. It also provides a good overview of the proper use of caching, compression, and reducing overhead. There is a discussion on the right way to keep the user engaged through a difficult airlink connection, and that's information which is usually ignored in most texts.

Newton's Telecom Dictionary: Telecommunications, Networking, Information Technologies, The Internet, Wired, Wireless, Satellites and Fiber
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

REVIEW OF THE 26th EDITION:
The past few days I've been browsing the 26th edition. The dictionary has a nice look and feel, like the 25th edition. It has 26,283 definitions, up from 24,950 in the 25th edition. I like how it stays open on any page you open it to. Sounds simple, but it's a nice user-friendly feature.
There are LOTS of new wireless terms in the 26th edition, for example, at least 20 new terms related to Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi calling, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi peer-to-peer, Wi-Fi roaming, Wi-Fi tethering, Wi-Fi smog, carrier Wi-Fi, and a bunch of definitions for new flavors of 802.11).
New Bluetooth definitions have been added (for example, Bluetooth 2.1, Bluetooth 3.0, and Bluetooth LE).
There also now are definitions for White-Fi, white space network, and white space phone.
There also are many other new wireless-related definitions in the 26th edition that pertain to ham radio, military communications, cellular telephony, small cells, and maritime communications. I like how the dictionary has gone beyond its roots in wireline telephony and embraces wireless communications in a big way.
The 26th edition also has a lot of "green telecom" and cloud-related definitions that were not in earlier editions.
One of the other reviewers of the 25th edition here on Amazon.com will be pleased to learn that the 26th edition's definitions of DOCSIS, DOCSIS 1.1, DOCSIS 2.0, and DOCSIS 3.0 have been updated, and definitions for all versions of HTML up to and including HTML 5.0 have been updated or included if they were missing before.
All things considered, the 26th edition is a great update.
My review of the 25th edition, which follows, contains information that is also true about the 26th edition.
EARLIER REVIEW OF THE 25th EDITION:
Speaking from over 20 years of experience working at LECs and domestic and international LD carriers, and having used various telecom and networking dictionaries over the years, I can say with certainty that Newton's Telecom Dictionary is the best -- by a mile.
Each year 500 to 1,000 new definitions are added to Newton's, and existing definitions are updated, improved, or enhanced in other ways. No other telecom dictionary on the market has even half as many definitions as Newton's. In fact, if you combine the definitions from all the other telecom dictionaries and weed out duplicates, their combined total probably still will be less than half of what's in Newton's. Harry Newton clearly loves telecom, as shown by the copiousness of the dictionary, the continuous additions to it, and the continuous refinements of it.
Our company currently has around 30 copies of the 25th edition and 300 copies of earlier editions. Newton's is used in the following departments: network engineering, network planning, circuit layout, security, legal and regulatory, enterprise sales, small and medium business sales, consumer sales, wholesale markets, sales engineering, managed network services, strategy and business development, marketing, customer service, billing operations, operator services, IT, education and training, corporate communications, outside plant, station I&M, wireless ops, and PMO; it's also used by our company's senior executives.
Newton's Telecom Dictionary is widely used in industry, government, the U.S. military, and academia. It is frequently cited by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and in documents submitted to the FCC by petitioners. Newton's Telecom Dictionary is also cited in print by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), U.S. District Courts, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), the U.S. Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS), the U.S. National Communications System (NCS), the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC), the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Small Business Administration (SBA), public utilities commissions (PUCs), public service commissions (PSCs), state and municipal government in the U.S. and abroad, and overseas PTTs (Post, Telephone, and Telegraph organizations).
It is also cited by over 100 textbooks, handbooks, and other technical reference books.

I've seen Newton's at telcos, cellular phone companies, long-distance carriers, broadband service providers, MVNOs, electrical engineering firms, defense contractors, systems integration companies, software services companies, commercial and public radio stations, a TV station, an Army satellite communications station, law firms, an ad agency, the IT department of a health services organization, the IT department of a realty company, the offices of a technology magazine publisher, universities, high schools, and state government offices.
Users of earlier editions of Newton's will be very pleased with this 25th anniversary edition. It has more terms than ever -- probably closer to 26,000 by my reckoning (based on a 10-page random sample) than the 24,950 indicated on the book's cover -- and a much more visually appealing and readable typography than was used in earlier editions. There are some new tables in the dictionary, expansions and updates of earlier definitions, and additional timeline dates.
Another interesting change is that the 25th edition uses a much thinner paper than earlier editions. It's the kind of paper that you see in books published in parts of the Far East, for example, in China and Taiwan. There are two practical benefits of this. First, even though the dictionary has grown by over 200 pages from its previous edition -- there are now 1,274 pages in the dictionary, not 1,250 pages as incorrectly stated in various booksellers' descriptions of it -- the dictionary is actually much lighter and thinner than previous editions. You can now easily carry it around with you. Second, because of the thin paper, it makes the book more flexible. You can open it to any page, let go of the page, and the book will stay open on that page.
This dictionary belongs in every department in every telco, cellco, cableco, pubco, satco, IXC, VoIP provider, AOS provider, systems integrator, managed services provider, equipment manufacturer, data center, and carrier hotel. Anyone outside of these industries who is involved in some way with telecom or networking, or who is studying it in school, or who writes about it for a living, will also find the 25th edition an indispensible resource.
