(More customer reviews)I bought this book about two months ago when my company was starting a J2ME project. I read the first 6 chapters page for page as an introduction and then used the rest of the book as a reference. I now consider myself a proficient J2ME programmer.
I've used the book mostly as a reference and I have found that the way the chapters are laid out makes it very easy to find whatever information I'm looking for. The chapters on Record Stores are particularly useful.
One reviewer said to just read the online docs. CDLC and MIDP are not very difficult technologies to become proficient at but the documentation online will make it much harder on you. If you don't mind wasting hours of time to save [money] on this book thats fine. But if your time is valuable like mine break down and make the investment. This book and the JavaDocs will be all you need to start professional apps in J2ME.

(More customer reviews)This is a book of thirty two independent chapters written by some of the leaders in mobile communication studies by MIT Press, a leader in ethnographic titles devoted to technology.
The chapters span research in countries and regions including Ghana, China, Mexico, Northern Africa, the Arab Gulf States, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Israel, India, the Philippines, Indonesia and South Korea. The editor, James E. Katz, heads the Center for Mobile Communication Studies at Rutgers University.
The focus is not on mobile technology, but how it is used by people based on primary research.
The authors are largely university researchers or researchers in mobile carrier labs. Included are well known mobile ethnographers Jan Chipchase and early prognosticators on technology adoption such as Harold Rheingold and Sherry Turkle.
Much of this type of research is conducted within companies with mobile business interests, and is never published. The value of the book is as a guide to university mobile research centers, who is publishing publicly in the field, in which journals, and at which conferences.
Every essay is fascinating, readable, and extensively footnoted.
The first section is Digital Divides and Social Mobility: studies of feature phone use in developing countries. The second is Sociality and Copresence: studies of dimensions of the always connected individual and group. The third section, Politics and Social Change includes specific studies on democracy, civil society and social change driven by individual and group use of mobile technology. The last section is Culture and Imagination: including studies of mobile gaming, courtship and family dynamics in India, music, and even mobile applications to spiritual mysticism in the Philippines.
I look forward to more books in this format on the topic, published every 2-3 years. Mobile society is a critical worldchanging topic, and moves quickly.

(More customer reviews)This book should be retitled as MIDPand JDBC:The complete reference. It is in NO way a complete reference for J2ME.
If you are looking a book on using the MIDP profile, this is as comprehensive as a book can get.It has complete code listings to explain each concept and has extensive coverage of the MIDP API's.
J2ME also consists of CDC profile that is used to write J2ME applications for wireless devices that are NOT memory constrained. When one clainms that they are creating a complete reference for J2ME, they cannot leave out CDC. This book does not even devote 1 chapter to explain CDC which is such a crucial part of J2ME. Instead the author wastes space and piles on chapters by explaining JDBC and web services.
Buy this book if you want to learn only MIDP, else this one is not for you.

In my travels and relationships I have run into situations where someone isn't feeling safe. Whether it is a jealous ex- boyfriend making threats, an information hacker gaining access to personal information or an obstinate teenager on a joy ride in Mom and Dad's car, safety is paramount.
I was given a book called Is My Cell Phone Bugged?: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your Mobile Conversations Private by Kevin D. Murray, who has been a consultant in detection and counterespionage for 31 years. At first I thought, "Why would I need to know if my phone is bugged? It clearly isn't. Who would want to listen in on me?" but then I got into the reading and found that the book isn't just about phone tapping, it's about knowing what people are capable of and how to protect yourself and your family.
As it turns out, there is quite a bit out there on the market today that can turn your life upside down without detection. Things like Zombie phones and Bluetooth hacking make my skin goose bump with dread. I have become a relatively technologically savvy person over the last few years, but part of me has always felt frightened of someone getting a hold of my personal information. New apps and wireless capabilities make it so easy for us to transfer data from one place to another-sensitive material- and yet we do it almost carelessly.
The public is lucky that most cell phones that are on the market, particularly the "smart" ones, have built in anti-spyware software that will protect you in a general way, but there are still devices and spyware out there that can listen in on us.
This book gives great information on what can be done to you, how to know it is being done and even offers a free alert device that can detect possible leaks on your cell phone. He also points out that listening to your gut and matching that with important clues can be a powerful combination when you are worried about safety.
It is also interesting (and scary) to know that the average person is capable of spying. For instance, what if you suspect your nanny is stealing from you? Is your teenager where they say they were going? There are plenty of options for a protective parent to get a good look at the whole picture, rather than waiting a worrying about what is really going on.
"Is My Cell Phone Bugged" provides a comprehensive look at what is available to almost anyone, how to use it and how to protect yourself from it. The knowledge that can be gained from Kevin D. Murray is invaluable and with no exception, knowledge is power.

Femtocells: Technologies and Deployment Review

It is a catchy name for a device "smaller" than a picocell [hence femto], that allows wireless access to a phone network and in practice also to the Internet. The book suggests that femtocells can play an important role in expanding wireless coverage to the interiors of buildings. Currently, basestations for mobile phones work best when the phones are outside. Once inside a building, the attenuation can be great enough so that contact is intermittent or non-existent. The crude workaround of having a basestation expand its power level is costly, both in terms of increasing interference with other basestations and also in the cost of the power. Plus, this still might not suffice to let a user inside a building get wireless contact.
The use of a femtocell inside a building is also reinforced by the expectation that this gadget will be bought and installed by an individual who lives there, or by a company who uses that building. This frees the cellular operator from the capital cost of supplying the femtocell. But as the book makes amply clear, a consequence is that femtocell setup, initialisation and maintenance needs to be as simple as possible; autonomic is the phrase used by the text. Readers might see the analogy with the popular use of DHCP for users with laptops who connect, wired or wirelessly, to the Internet. DHCP has greatly reduced the cognitive requirement on the users regarding low level technical settings.
A major issue in the book is how to handle handoffs when a mobile device moves between a femtocell and another femtocell or a macrocell [the latter is the regular cell around a basestation]. Several algorithms are proposed to optimise the change overs.

(More customer reviews)This is a collection, and the quality of the articles varies widely. Some of the folks are, to be blunt, poor writers of English and could have used some serious editing. On the other hand, several of the authors have the kind of solid understanding of the technical issues -- electromagnetic theory in this case -- that a popular journalist rarely brings to the table. The book starts with a huge chronology, which is of course a bit dull to plod through, but contains a number of remarkable revelations -- e.g. the first ideas about radar are much earlier than you would have thought!There are a couple of interesting discussions about Maxwell and his work, which conveniently provide his actual (scalar) equations in modern notation. Features are also provided on Heaviside, Hertz, Tesla, and other luminaries. Worthwhile for the scholar or serious student of the history of science, but not likely to be accessible for those looking for a quick read.

Beginning J2ME Platform: From Novice to Professional Review

(More customer reviews)J2ME is a jungle of configurations, profiles, and APIs. A beginner's book might soar over the jungle like an exotic bird, pretty but insubstantial. Such a book would see everything from a 20,000 foot view. You'd see the lay of the land, but wouldn't get your feet wet.
Another approach would be for the authors to grab their machetes and start hacking their way in, following a particular path. You'd get all dirty and sweaty and get a lot of experience, but not necessarily understand exactly how you got there.
This book decidedly takes this latter path. After a brief introductory chapter, it concentrates on the core APIs and the most commonly implemented configuration and device profile. Although there's plenty of practical information on tools and lots of code examples, as a reader unfamiliar with J2ME, and someone who doesn't own a Java-enabled phone, I felt disoriented. As an introduction to J2ME programming, I felt the book was lacking in background and motivations.
Striking a balance between the two approaches I described might be a fool's errand. Therefore you would probably need one book from each category to really get involved in J2ME development.

'Kerry Crofton, PhD is a health educator, the director of WellBeing International, and a concerned parent.' So begins this informative book on safeguarding your family from the risks of electro-pollution. Her purpose is to alert a nation of device consumers to the possible risks to mental and physical and environmental health. She divides her book into steps as The 4 Step Plan: Know the Evidence, Know the Risks, Know the Safer Solutions, and Plan for the Future. What proceeds after her lengthy introduction is a conversational book accompanied by photographs illustrating the problems she is outlining, and lots of data gathering and presentation by experts in the field of the effects of exposure to electromagnetic pollution. It is startling and while it may not be absolutely documented with long term proof (not enough time has elapsed to know just how dangerous are our habits with these devices), Crofton at least is the New Age Paul Revere we ned to alert us to think about the consequences of our habits before the damage is physically perceived.
Some may find this book a bit simplistic and some may ignore the information as 'sensational' and not worthy of time spent reading. But, as Crofton alludes to in her book, just remember how not too long ago no one connected smoking with lung cancer....This book deserves our attention and our consideration. Dr. Crofton may be a needed harbinger. Grady Harp, October 10

(More customer reviews)I knew a little bit of Java, and I found this book very good. J2ME is explained pretty good, and the examples are easy to follow. I have developed several applications that I use after reading this book.
If there is anything that is missing in this book, it would probably be an Appendix with a better description of the different APIs.
It is a very good book for anyone that wants to learn J2ME, but might be a little boring if you already have J2ME experience. However, if you buy a "Teach Yourself .... in 21 days" book, you are probably not an experienced programmer in the language anyway.

(More customer reviews)Brodsky offers a wonderful history of wireless in terms of who and why, something that has been lacking in a wireless history book until this publication. Those interested in understanding the personal connections of the individuals involved through the development of this industry will want to read it. Those who are working in the industry or desire to break in as entrepreneurs need to read it. His last section on creativity is wonderfully useful. If you have the guts to truly innovate, or are doing so now in any industry I highly recommend this book. It was obvious the material was well researched (due to the limited information available on some of the individuals involved from a historic perspective, Brodsky did provide sufficient information to get his many points across, somewhat rare in a book that covers 130+ years through the development of an industry). There was only one element that I would have liked to see him expand on a bit more, and that was in the area of convergence. I think a few more pages devoted to the cable and telephone networks along with wireless would have rounded out this section perfectly; but then maybe not, as it potentially could have risked loosing the true focus of wireless.

This is a subject I had little to no knowledge of (or interest in) and yet I found myself unable to put this book down. The story is truly incredible. The insider perspective he provides gives the reader a view into the birth of an entire industry.
Time and again he details the steps, and more often mis-steps, that led to the wireless world we live in today. As interesting as the stories of the visionaries who "got it" from the begining are, the tales of those who guessed wrong are even more incredible. Huge corporations, respected "experts," and the US government all made one wrong decision after the other, while a handful of players who figured out just how big this industry could be took incredible gambles to succeed. At the same time, every day individuals from widows to plumbers had a chance to participate, and make millions in what was essentially a government run lottery.
A riveting first hand account of the creation of an industry where billions were made and lost, and continue to be today.
