i-mode Strategy Review

i-mode Strategy

The book's title promises "i-mode strategy" but fails to deliver anything but a strangely low-level account covering some of the difficulties encountered in the initial development and launch of i-mode. The book feels like it's been scrubbed clean of interesting anecdotes by a corporate PR department. It's also written by an author who remains annoyingly proud of her luddite status, so there's very little in the way of real tech strategy to be gleaned from it.

Java ME Game Programming Review

Java ME Game Programming

This book has little to do with game programming. It's a book about MIDP 2.0 programming with Java ME for building mobile applications (using GUI controls). The last three chapters (which are quite small) touch on tiles and sprites. So basically you've got a 400+ page book while only about 50 pages is actually about programming mobile games? I would have STARTED the book with chapter 13 and moved on from there into various game topics, instead of ENDING there and doing a poor job of it. The example game in the last chapter was designed for the old 128x128 screens and is probably about 4-5 years old (with 8x8 sprites) which is unacceptable for a book released in 2007 with this title. This is a GOOD book on MIDP 2.0 programming...if you ignore the "game" part of the title. I used this book to teach a course on the subject, but will need to find another for next semester.

Is My Cell Phone Bugged?: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your Mobile Conversations Private Review

Is My Cell Phone Bugged: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your Mobile Conversations Private
Average Reviews:

I don't like to be a downer and talk about topics that scare us or call up negative feelings, but family security is something that needs to be considered. In my travels and relationships I have run into situations where someone isn't feeling safe. Whether it is a jealous ex- boyfriend making threats, an information hacker gaining access to personal information or an obstinate teenager on a joy ride in Mom and Dad's car, safety is paramount.
I was given a book called Is My Cell Phone Bugged?: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your Mobile Conversations Private by Kevin D. Murray, who has been a consultant in detection and counterespionage for 31 years. At first I thought, "Why would I need to know if my phone is bugged? It clearly isn't. Who would want to listen in on me?" but then I got into the reading and found that the book isn't just about phone tapping, it's about knowing what people are capable of and how to protect yourself and your family.
As it turns out, there is quite a bit out there on the market today that can turn your life upside down without detection. Things like Zombie phones and Bluetooth hacking make my skin goose bump with dread. I have become a relatively technologically savvy person over the last few years, but part of me has always felt frightened of someone getting a hold of my personal information. New apps and wireless capabilities make it so easy for us to transfer data from one place to another-sensitive material- and yet we do it almost carelessly.
The public is lucky that most cell phones that are on the market, particularly the "smart" ones, have built in anti-spyware software that will protect you in a general way, but there are still devices and spyware out there that can listen in on us.
This book gives great information on what can be done to you, how to know it is being done and even offers a free alert device that can detect possible leaks on your cell phone. He also points out that listening to your gut and matching that with important clues can be a powerful combination when you are worried about safety.
It is also interesting (and scary) to know that the average person is capable of spying. For instance, what if you suspect your nanny is stealing from you? Is your teenager where they say they were going? There are plenty of options for a protective parent to get a good look at the whole picture, rather than waiting a worrying about what is really going on.
"Is My Cell Phone Bugged" provides a comprehensive look at what is available to almost anyone, how to use it and how to protect yourself from it. The knowledge that can be gained from Kevin D. Murray is invaluable and with no exception, knowledge is power.

Professional Android 2 Application Development (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) Review

Professional Android 2 Application Development (Wrox Programmer to Programmer)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Android 2 is pretty new (as of March 2010) so having an Android 2 book on the market that is good quality was unexpected. I have not read all chapters, but here are my impressions so far:
Pro's
=====
- Author's style is neither dull or exciting, just to the point. Most explanations are clear and thorough.
- I definitely feel I have a good resource to complement the online Android docs. There have been a variety of topics I've tried to answer using Android docs (and Google searches) without much luck that this book covered clearly.
- There are a lot of good topics covered. Space is not wasted on reprinting information readily available online. Instead, author regularly refers reader to web links.
- And, finally, I appreciate the well-edited index.
Con's
=====
- The book is very weak in the illustration department. For example, instead of showing an image of a NinePatch bitmap, the author explains how a NinePatch should be constructed. This is chintzy and unforgivable for a book about a heavily visual technology.
- Occassionally, concepts are introduced without providing context. 'Kinda like when you walk into a meeting and the speakers clearly know their material but forget that 90% of the others in the room need to be brought up to speed before instructing.
- Some conspicuous omissions. For instance, no information on fonts.
