I can see how this book would appeal to both the prospective BlackBerry owner and someone who just opened the box and is wondering "what next?". The first part of the book does a nice job explaining the different types of BlackBerry devices and how they are all branded based on the network provider who is selling them. From then on, it's a matter of exploring all the different software options that come part and parcel with the device. You could almost look at this as the readable instruction manual for your new toy, because there's not much that's not covered here. I was especially surprised about how the PIN to PIN messaging occurs, and how it's potentially the most secure type of messaging you can find on the market today. Plus it continues to work when many other cellular services break down due to overload. All really good stuff here...
This is worth purchasing if you've just jumped into the BlackBerry field or if you've been handed one at work with little explanation on how to use it. A little time spent between you, this book, and your BlackBerry will make everyone a whole lot happier. I'm even considering making the switch now...

Core J2ME Technology Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this book about two months ago when my company was starting a J2ME project. I read the first 6 chapters page for page as an introduction and then used the rest of the book as a reference. I now consider myself a proficient J2ME programmer.
I've used the book mostly as a reference and I have found that the way the chapters are laid out makes it very easy to find whatever information I'm looking for. The chapters on Record Stores are particularly useful.
One reviewer said to just read the online docs. CDLC and MIDP are not very difficult technologies to become proficient at but the documentation online will make it much harder on you. If you don't mind wasting hours of time to save [money] on this book thats fine. But if your time is valuable like mine break down and make the investment. This book and the JavaDocs will be all you need to start professional apps in J2ME.

(More customer reviews)If you intend to develop BlackBerry apps, this is a great book. It doesn't teach you programming, it doesn't spoon feed you on how to create apps like some of the other iPhone books.
What it does provide is that it has all the relevant information you need to know about developing for the BlackBerry platform in one location. The author is clearly very knowledgeable.
I have developed apps for the BlackBerry platform since 2002. I only wish this book was available earlier. Highly recommended for both experienced and beginners. Just don't expect this to be a book that teaches programming or J2ME fundamentals.

Blackjacking: Security Threats to BlackBerry Devices, PDAs, and Cell Phones in the Enterprise Review

(More customer reviews)Blackjacking takes on the task of educating both administrators and management about the threats of mobile devices to their enterprise. I believe this book succeeds in its task and serves as a great reference not only for the blackberry enterprise server (BES) administrators out there but also for the network administrators, help desk personnel, security personnel as well as a book that can aid in the education of the end users. It is written in a tone and dialog that can be useful to the technical reader and non-technical reader and does well digging into the relatively new field of mobile device (especially BlackBerry) security.
The book starts out with a very good overview of the threats to mobile devices (Malware, Direct Attack, Data Communication Interception, Spoofing and Sniffing, and Physical Compromise). It then moves into an excellent overview of the devices that will be covered in the book (BlackBerrys, Pocket PCs, Palm Handhelds, and Cell Phones).
From there each device is covered in depth with "Exploiting the Device", "Hacking the Supporting Device Infrastructure", and "Protecting your PC and LAN from the Device."
The BlackBerry section (which is probably why you are thinking about purchasing the book) does a great job covering the current and future attacks given the fairly limited publicly available research, tools, and code and gives solid advice on setting up your network infrastructure to deal with the growing threat with mobile devices. The vignettes discussing plausible attacks for each attack scenario serve as good feasible examples to think about for your enterprise and users and how to protect your network.
Likes: Discussion of how BlackBerry communications work with your cell phone provider and within a BlackBerry Enterprise Server environment, all the background material on the BlackBerry device, multiple examples (for further research on what is best for your environment) for AV and firewall solutions for each type of device, and seeing attacks on most of the threats in the lab using available tools.
Dislikes: while not in the scope of the book more code examples would be nice (of course it would take away from the usability of the book to "non-technical" people) and the book didn't list links for the tools and malware discussed (yes I know Google exists).
Overall an excellent book. I purchased the book for my BlackBerry admin (but I read it first) and I think he will find it useful since he is not a "security" guy. It really ties together networking best practices and technologies and while not a "BlackBerry (or mobile device) or network lockdown guide" blackjacking serves as a good reference for further research into AV, firewalls, and VPNs for mobile devices as well as safe methods for allowing those devices entry and access into your network.

The book assumes you have some familiarity with Java because that is the language used to create apps for Blackberry.

The bad news is that chapter 1 was total drivel like obama likes his blackberry a lot and a lot of people use it. The rest of the book was boring and lacked any substantial real information.
Unfortunately I would recommend that others spare themselves the agony of reading it.
