This book is really well written. It goes into detail on a difficult subject and doesnt assume you already know the basics like a lot of books do. It goes into both the theory and how you would implement a numerical solution via matlab. Definately worth the expense if you are learning numerical solutions of EM problems.

A most welcome book on recent developments in antenna theory and practice, fully justifying use of the term "Frontiers" in the title. Perhaps the closest that comes to this book in coverage of modern topics is Volakis's Handbook, now four years old. Modern applications of this classical field are emerging at a fast pace - largely spurred by the growth of wireless communications technology. In one handy volume one finds an encyclopedic coverage of modern antenna types - including ultra-wideband antenna arrays, smart antennas, Vivaldi arrays, artificial magnetic conductors, metamaterial antennas, leaky-wave antennas, plasma antennas and reconfigurable antennas; along with a select coverage of numerical modeling and optimizing techniques and of emerging applications in medicine, including ingestible capsule antennas! The book has a lovely cover and a spine that adorns my shelf along with classics like Schelkunoff and Friis, Silver, Kraus, Collin, Hansen, Stutzman and Thiele, Elliott, and Balanis, to name only a few.
The book is clearly meant for select readers - such as a graduate student with a background of EM fields and waves who is looking for a topic for research in antennas, or is in the midst of it. In general, the book will serve as a great reference for any one who has more than a casual interest in antennas.

The little, most basic research she included in this book just somehow wasn't enough coming from an author who spends a good portion of the book trying to lecture me on how to spend time with my family away from the wireless world. I wanted a book that was 100% research and science that I could use in my quest to teach people about this growing health threat - not mushy lectures about how I should go out and climb trees, study insects, watch fish swim, or throw a ball around with my children instead - nobody is going to listen to that. Though I agree with the author that this is what needs to be done, I just felt this was obvious and shouldn't have been included in the book.
An even bigger gripe of mine though about this book was that the author suggests 'safer' ways of using this technology (for example, ear pieces or headsets instead of holding a cell phone directly against the head). I'm sorry, but safer for who? Even if every person who owns a mobile phone today pinky swears to only use it in the event of a 'true' emergency, that cell phone tower down the street will still need to irradiate me and my loved ones all year long for that one emergency call that may never happen. The author is foolish in thinking we can hold onto this technology in ANY amount and at the same time be healthy, just as foolish as an alcoholic or drug addict who thinks he'll be okay if he limits it to one sip or one line. Bottom line: as long as billions of people own cell phones, billions of towers and antennas will be required. And whether we use our cell phones heavily or not, if we choose to own one and are paying the cell phone company every month, whether we realize it or not, we are essentially funding this massacre.
At times I wondered if the author was completely aware of the urgency of the matter at hand. Honey bees are dying, the bats, the fireflies, sunspots are disappearing, the solar wind pressure is diminishing... This planet does not have time for a 10-year rehabilitation program. We cannot afford to be mushy at presenting this subject to the public, and we need to take a stand now and say NO to this technology. This technology - wireless technology in any way, shape, or form needs to go - period. I'd even be willing to give up the light bulbs and heat in my home just to have some measure of health again.
Far better choices would be "Cell Towers - Wireless Convenience? or Environmental Hazard" by B. Blake Levitt or "Cross Currents" and "The Body Electric" by Dr. Robert O. Becker.

Fact: we are a world committed to technology, especially when technology provides immediate access to people and information. How many people do NOT own a microwave - or several at office, home, garage? Cell Phones and computers were not around a few years ago and now it seems as though even the youngest child who can carry and poke has a cell phone on their person 'just in case of an emergency'. And who can compete in the communications world without a computer on the desk, a laptop in the backpack, or an iPhone variation in the pocket/purse/belt? Can anyone remember the telephone that was on a cord in a room in the house where you actually had to walk to to answer? Is anyone without the various digital radios, timers, televisions with video games, etc.? That is just the way we live today - too little concerned about the side effects of 'convenience' and not concerned enough about the daily increasing amount of electromagnetic energy filling our breathing and living space - energy that has been proven to kill bees and diminish other wildlife as well as injure our sacred green earth.
'Kerry Crofton, PhD is a health educator, the director of WellBeing International, and a concerned parent.' So begins this informative book on safeguarding your family from the risks of electro-pollution. Her purpose is to alert a nation of device consumers to the possible risks to mental and physical and environmental health. She divides her book into steps as The 4 Step Plan: Know the Evidence, Know the Risks, Know the Safer Solutions, and Plan for the Future. What proceeds after her lengthy introduction is a conversational book accompanied by photographs illustrating the problems she is outlining, and lots of data gathering and presentation by experts in the field of the effects of exposure to electromagnetic pollution. It is startling and while it may not be absolutely documented with long term proof (not enough time has elapsed to know just how dangerous are our habits with these devices), Crofton at least is the New Age Paul Revere we ned to alert us to think about the consequences of our habits before the damage is physically perceived.
Some may find this book a bit simplistic and some may ignore the information as 'sensational' and not worthy of time spent reading. But, as Crofton alludes to in her book, just remember how not too long ago no one connected smoking with lung cancer....This book deserves our attention and our consideration. This textbook is the best of all fundamental texts on smart antennas and adaptive arrays. It reduces this complex topic into the basic elements that are necessary for understanding smart antennas. Basic chapters are written on electromagnetics, antennas, arrays, random processes, channel modeling, spectral estimation, and adaptive arrays. Most chapters include worked out Matlab examples illustrating concepts just explained. The Matlab codes for each example, figure, and homework problems are included with the text. I have seen no other comparable text which lucidly explains the foundations of smart antennas and which also gives computer examples.
