Build Your Own PC Do-It-Yourself For Dummies Review

Build Your Own PC Do-It-Yourself For Dummies

Imagine all of those beautiful, expensive parts on your work table, and a trusted friend shows up to walk you through the process of building your first computer. He's there to look over your should and help when you need. You are confident and empowered.
This is an excellent book, with very clear logic about laying out and building three different levels of computer systems. While I have been a PC user since 1981, I never tried to build one until now, and I was worried about how the big bucks I was plunking down would translate.
Now that you have all these parts, where do you start? What should your concerns be? in 28 years of PC fiddling and replacing parts, for example, I never had anybody tell me that it was okay (and useful) to use a magnetic screwdriver.
While it is, technologically speaking, a step behind the latest state of the art, it covers the fundamental order and process of assembly and test in clear, concise and memorable prose. Couple this with the "bad english" instructions that will come with your components, and you should get through this fine.
The author is good enough to inspire confidence. I guess the only things I saw that were lacking is I would like to have seen him write about building a laptop and about liquid cooling. Other than that, I could not think of an idea that was missed.
There is also a CD with it. Oddly enough, this book lacks a "troubleshooting" chapter or section, but that's the only flaw I've found.

Ubuntu Linux For Dummies Review

This provides a great beginning overview to Ubuntu Linux and had some very interesting history about it. Switching from Microsoft to Linux, this book carefully explained the similarities and differences. Because Ubuntu is very intuitive, some of the book's sections were simplistic, but thorough in the explanation. Overall, a very good starting point in learning the new OS.

Facebook and Twitter For Seniors For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) Review

Facebook and Twitter For Seniors For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))
Average Reviews:

I consider myself to be well versed in Facebook and Twitter and the etiquette for both. What I am not capable of is explaining it to my parents. I got this book today, and it's the perfect tool to introduce seniors to the social web (sorry mom).
The chapters are well laid out, with great examples of lingo that I (as a heavy social media user) take for granted.
If your mom doesn't know a DM from a status update, just buy her this book. It's really terrific. Also, Marsha mentions that as we age we are less mobile. This could be very liberating for someone who can't get out as much as they'd like to.

Windows 7 For Dummies Book + DVD Bundle Review

Windows 7 For Dummies Book + DVD Bundle
Average Reviews:

Very well written with a gentle humor. The book is written for all levels of computer knowledge. You can skip around and read subjects where you need help or have an interest. I chose to start studying at the beginning and even found the basic level of information interesting. Andy has a way of pointing out the secrets of Windows 7. He even taught me several points about Windows XP in the process.
The DVD is excellent and covers the basics of Windows 7. The book deals in the depth but the DVD gets you off and running and you can learn from there. Windows 7 is a good operating system but when you jump from XP to Win7 there are gaps that are not obvious. The DVD gets you up to speed quickly.
I think the DVD and book package are well worth the price. I have recommended it to several people already. They agree with me that it is a good purchase.

Wireless Broadband Handbook Review

Wireless Broadband Handbook
Average Reviews:

If you do not have any technical experience in wireless and you are looking to get a grasp on the basic technology, applications, and market, I would recommend this book. Sit down read it through quickly then move on. If you have moderate wireless experience and are trying to get caught up on 2.5G and 3G technology and standards, this is NOT the book.
Beyond this point, I found that Bates repeated the same information time and time again without any new twist. I can not say that I will forget what he had to say, but he did not enrich the information. He also prognosticates based upon inspiration without any facts. After the latest "hockey stick market" bust, I would be careful basing any demand and penetration projections on historical information.
Finally, do not use the table of contents as an indicator of the depth of this book (like I did).

Hacking Wireless Networks For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)) Review

Hacking Wireless Networks For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Think your wireless network is secure from unauthorized use or attack? It's probably not. I just finished reading Hacking Wireless Network For Dummies by Kevin Beaver and Peter T. Davis, and this is one of the most practical books I've ever read for testing a network against attack.
Contents:
Part 1 - Building the Foundation for Testing Wireless Networks: Introduction to Wireless Hacking; The Wireless Hacking Process; Implementing a Testing Methodology; Amassing Your War Chest
Part 2 - Getting Rolling with Common Wi-Fi Hacks: Human (in)Security; Containing the Airwaves; Hacking Wireless Clients; Discovering Default Settings; Wardriving
Part 3 - Advanced Wi-Fi Hacks: Still at War; Unauthorized Wireless Devices; Network Attacks; Denial-of-Service Attacks; Cracking Encryption; Authenticating Users
Part 4 - The Part of Tens: Ten Essential Tools for Hacking Wireless Networks; Ten Wireless Security-Testing Mistakes; Ten Tips for Following Up after Your Testing
Part 5 - Appendixes: Wireless Hacking Resources; Glossary of Acronyms
Index
The target of this book is the security professional involved in testing networks to make them more secure. There's a heavy emphasis on "ethical hacking", or learning how to test a network's security without doing harm or using the information in a destructive fashion. A security consultant using this book would learn how to pre-plan a test, work with the company to make sure they were properly authorized, and then write up the results in a professional manner. That aspect of the book is impressive, and it helps to frame the information in the right light (not as a textbook on how to break into networks).
From a practical standpoint, this book excels. Each of the chapters covers the theory behind how or why a certain aspect of a wireless network would be vulnerable to an attack or exploit. Then the authors cover a number of open source and commercial software packages that are available to focus on that area. For instance, chapter 14 goes into why WEP encryption is flawed and how it can be broken with relatively little effort. It's followed by an explanation on how WPA addresses some of those issues. Finally you get coverage on available tools that are used to crack WEP and how you can use them to test your own network.
Highly practical and heavy on application... If you're a security professional with responsibility for your organization's wireless network, you need to read this book. And if you're a techno-geek with your own wireless network, you'll want to get this book to play around. I know I will be doing a little hacking at Chez Duffbert...

Become a cyber-hero - know the common wireless weaknesses

Wireless networks are so convenient - not only for you, but also for those nefarious types who'd like to invade them. The only way to know if your system can be penetrated is to simulate an attack. This book shows you how, along with how to strengthen any weak spots you find in your network's armor.
Discover how to:
Perform ethical hacks without compromising a system
Combat denial of service and WEP attacks
Understand how invaders think
Recognize the effects of different hacks
Protect against war drivers and rogue devices
