(More customer reviews)Imagine all of those beautiful, expensive parts on your work table, and a trusted friend shows up to walk you through the process of building your first computer. He's there to look over your should and help when you need. You are confident and empowered.
This is an excellent book, with very clear logic about laying out and building three different levels of computer systems. While I have been a PC user since 1981, I never tried to build one until now, and I was worried about how the big bucks I was plunking down would translate.
Now that you have all these parts, where do you start? What should your concerns be? in 28 years of PC fiddling and replacing parts, for example, I never had anybody tell me that it was okay (and useful) to use a magnetic screwdriver.
While it is, technologically speaking, a step behind the latest state of the art, it covers the fundamental order and process of assembly and test in clear, concise and memorable prose. Couple this with the "bad english" instructions that will come with your components, and you should get through this fine.
The author is good enough to inspire confidence. I guess the only things I saw that were lacking is I would like to have seen him write about building a laptop and about liquid cooling. Other than that, I could not think of an idea that was missed.
There is also a CD with it. Oddly enough, this book lacks a "troubleshooting" chapter or section, but that's the only flaw I've found.

(More customer reviews)Possibly the most important things Gookin explains are how to keep an eye on your power consumption when using batteries, and how to hook up to the Internet. These are both usually in the real world context of you travelling to some place. That's why you're getting a laptop, right?
The battery situation can be frustrating. He warns not to lose work. Depending on your choice of laptop, power consumption might be an issue. The faster the laptop, the more power it uses. There is a complicated reason to do with CMOS technology used in most of the laptop's microprocessors, where the power consumption is proportional to the clock frequency. But the main thing is to be aware that speed comes at a price.
As far as hooking up to the Internet, Gookin shows that things are reasonably easy nowadays, and getting easier. The latter is because more wireless access points emerge in cities, and more hotels, libraries etc have wired access. Remember to change the default passwords on any networking software you run, before having it go out on a strange network.

(More customer reviews)I consider myself to be well versed in Facebook and Twitter and the etiquette for both. What I am not capable of is explaining it to my parents. I got this book today, and it's the perfect tool to introduce seniors to the social web (sorry mom).
The chapters are well laid out, with great examples of lingo that I (as a heavy social media user) take for granted.
If your mom doesn't know a DM from a status update, just buy her this book. It's really terrific. Also, Marsha mentions that as we age we are less mobile. This could be very liberating for someone who can't get out as much as they'd like to.

CompTIA A+ Certification All-In-One For Dummies Review

(More customer reviews)Waste of money, waste of time. I'm sorry to say it because I normally love (and trust) the "Dummies" series of books. But I'm a pretty computer proficient person already, and I knew a TON of the material was just useless and obsolete. To confirm my suspicions, I downloaded the official A+ 2009 exam objectives, and sure enough, about half of what this Dummies book covers isn't even covered at all. Who uses ISA slots or Pentium 2s these days, come on?!
They tried to update the book by throwing in new hardware types and such, but it was such an obvious copy and paste job. You might be reading a paragraph, talking about how new and prevalent X hardware is, only to read a recent paragraph addition about how new and prevalent hardware Y is. Guess what, only one of them is (e.g., X went out of style years ago, everyone uses Y now). This is very common.
Updating a book--especially something so technical--should involve more than pasting in some new material. It should be deleting the useless stuff, and giving the reader a true sense of what's the dominant hardware type and what's going out of style. Reading this, you might have no idea if you didn't have prior knowledge. Plus, there are blatant inaccuracies (e.g., AMD's new AM3 processors have 938 pins, not 941 as written in the book).
Sorry, but I can't recommend this book. Comprehensive, yes. Accurate, up-to-date, and relevant? Not by a mile.

(More customer reviews)I used to wonder why anyone would want to break into my computer, there's not much there of any interest. Even I don't find it all that interesting. Then one day I was puzzled when my ISP asked why my machine was putting out millions of bytes of stuff to the point where it was bogging down their T1 line. I didn't know. We unpluged the machine from the network and it stopped sending. We plugged it back in and it wasn't sending. But the next day it was.
It wasn't until we got an e-mail telling us to stop sending out copyrighted movies that we realized what had happened. It wasn't anything in my computer they wanted, it was the bandwidth. Knowing what to look for it wasn't all that hard to stop. Google quickly provided links on this problem.
This book is aimed at people just like me. It gives an overall, if fairly light, view of the overall security problem. Like the other For Dummies books it has a writing style that doesn't (quite) put you to sleep. It has enough humor to enable you to get through it. It won't make you an expert, but it will point out the problem areas so that you can go deeper into those that are important to you. It's a good introduction.

I chose to start studying at the beginning and even found the basic level of information interesting. Andy has a way of pointing out the secrets of Windows 7. He even taught me several points about Windows XP in the process.
The DVD is excellent and covers the basics of Windows 7. The book deals in the depth but the DVD gets you off and running and you can learn from there. Windows 7 is a good operating system but when you jump from XP to Win7 there are gaps that are not obvious. The DVD gets you up to speed quickly.
I think the DVD and book package are well worth the price. I have recommended it to several people already. They agree with me that it is a good purchase.

But thanks to Dan Gookin and his book I am using my new Droid like I've had it for months. His book has a wealth of information and covers everything there is to know about the phone except perhaps how to build your own. What I like most is the color pictures since I am a visual learner. Would I buy another one? Absolutely and in fact I did. The next day I went back to the book store and purchased one for my sons. Thanks from a senior citizen!

Switching to a Mac For Dummies Review

(More customer reviews)I am a novice Mac user and I have been attempting to make the adjustment from using a PC to a Mac. I thought written information would assist in my transition and, after receiving my dummies book, I immediately began reading through it. The Table of Contents makes it easy to find subjects you are looking for. The first chapters of the book are very basic, exactly what you would expect if you were new to the world of Macs. I will say that throughout the book, the author writes as an enthusiastic fan of Mac products and his cheery attitude builds excitement for making the change to Mac. As I skimmed through the information I was familiar with, I learned about the command key and other unique features of the Mac. Chapter 5 was the most helpful one for me because it contained a great table comparing terminology between Windows and Mac. Also included in Chapter 5 was a list of keyboard shortcuts.
Tips, things to remember, and warnings are highlighted throughout the book making it easy to thumb through chapters and find important items. The author spent quite a bit of time discussing passwords and security. One important thing I learned was that the author does not recommend downloading virus protection unless you are also planning to install Windows on your Mac.
I was especially interested in learning about Snow Leopard but was disappointed when reviewing the book. Although the book's cover states "get the most from Mac OS X Snow Leopard" I didn't find any specifics. The book does state that Snow Leopard is an updated version of the Mac operating system and is version 10.6. Information on what makes Snow Leopard a better operating system would have been helpful, even if release notes from Apple had been included.
What helped me: Chapter 5: Mac OS X for Windows Users. This chapter, as I stated earlier in my review, has terminology, keyboard shortcuts, and information on Time Machine and Time Capsule and other differences between Macs and Windows.

What I have yet to explore: IPhoto (Chapter 12), Producing Movies and Music (Chapter 13), and Building Your Space on the Web (Chapter 14). I have uploaded photos to my Mac and my son has used IPhoto to play a slide show accompanied by ITunes music. The slide shows are so much fun to view.
Bottom line recommendation about book: This book provides a good overview of the differences between Macs and Windows. The author definitely is a Mac fan and recommends Macs for their quality. You can find terminology, program information, and lots of tips if you have questions and don't want to search Help on Apple's web site.

Home Theater For Dummies Review

(More customer reviews)I went out and got Home Theater for Everyone (Harley), Build Your Home Theater in a Weekend (Bruyn/Karabian), The Complete Idiot's Guide to Home Theater Systems (Miller), Use Your PC to Build An Incredible Home Theater System (Farkas and Govier), and Home Theater for Dummies (Briere and Hurley). (I've posted this review in each of the books).
There's a clear difference among these books, and approaches. In order, I would get these books:
1. (tie) Home Theater for Everyone; Home Theater for Dummies. This surprised me. I've heard a lot about Harley's book and it is great. It's getting dated though, and some stuff was simply way over my head for what I'm going to do with my home theater. But it's one of those books you have to read even if you don't understand a lot of it (and mind you, I've got seven computers in my house, a 100Meg LAN, multiple wireless systems, etc...I'm not scared of technical stuff.) It's not so much not understanding it, as much as it is that a lot of it while important to a magazine editor such as Harley, it's not something that you're going to use in putting in your home theater.
Home Theater for Dummies surprised me. I must say, I found it incredibly well researched, practical, and more homey and less academic than Harley's book. I think the title would keep a lot of the HT mags from reviewing it, thinking it beneath them. And the authors clearly know how to have fun (they have sections on how to create your own drive-in and another on bathroom theater.) They cover home theater PCs and Windows XP Media Center PCs, as well as wireless projectors -- so this is truly up to day at publication time because these are relatively new things. (Harley's book does not even mention HTPCs and gives relatively small coverage to personal video recorders (PVRs) which HT for Dummies covers well. I'd say just get this book, but no one would believe me.
3. User Your PC To Build An Incredible Home Theater System. This is a niche book for the techies that like to build their own PCs. Sort of like me :-) I found it knowledgeable and fun, but like I said, you would not buy this book to build a home theater.
4. The Complete Idiots Guide to Home Theater Systems. I liked this book's coverage of budgets and little facts in the book. However there was nothing on HTPCs, the pricing is already dated, and there was nothing in it not covered in Home Theater for Dummies. So if I have to choose between being a Dummy or an Idiot, I'd say I'm a Dummy.
5. Build Your Home Theater In A Weekend. This was basically a waste of money. It was a nice effort, but outclassed by the competition above. It's not worth a longer review.
If you are looking to put a home theater in your home, I'd recommend Harley and Briere/Hurley. Briere/Hurley also wrote Smart Homes for Dummies which they referenced in the HT book -- I'm getting that now, because it basically tells me how to extend my home theater all over the house. Since I spent a lot of money on my home theater, I'm betting, based on HT4Dummies, that their book is worth the $$$.

It's written (as all the Dummies books) by a "normal" person for "normal" people. The Apple Mac setup wizard (unlike Pc ones) included with your purchase of the Airport is actually useful but there are some extra choices in the menus that are explained in greater detail and much clearer here.
