(More customer reviews)I was a "dummy" when it came to pc basics. I wanted to know Ram, rom, whats on the motherboard, etc. I wanted to know my Dell 4100 inside and out. Thanks to Mr. Gookin's excellent book, I am on my way to becoming very good friends with the very computer that once intimidated the heck out of me. He talks in, depth (but doesnt go so far as to confuse the beginner with a lot of geek jargon), and with humor, all you need to know about your computer so you can feel confident about using it. Youre not going to be a techinician when youre done with this book, but after reading it, you will be able to go to the local computer store with confidence and talk their language and not get the runaround. If every computer were to come with an instruction book, this one should be it!! Hats off to Dan Gookin and IDG books for such an excellent book. I look forward to reading Upgrading and Fixing Pc's For Dummies next!

Upgrading and Fixing Computers Do-it-Yourself For Dummies Review

(More customer reviews)I first owned a PC when I was 14 and when my mom bought it for me I didn't know the difference between Windows and DOS and didn't even know what RAM or a CPU was. When I bought this I didn't really have any experience with using a PC, so after learning how to use one for awhile I purchased this book and read it.
This taught me a lot about repairing computers and installing new hardware. Anyone who doesnt have a ton of Knowledge about computers and is just starting out with Computers should check this book out if you want to learn more about them. I know for me it helped out a lot. If you've been a computer user for years and already know how to install a Hard Drive, Motherboard, Video Card and Memory etc, then I would skip this one. It's not very technical at all and is obviously for people that don't know much about computers at all. It's really just a good place to start.
I'm now 21 and have worked as a Computer Technician for about 3 years now. I definitely think that this book helped out a ton, it was definitely a good place to start. I believe there are to many people out there are afraid to upgrade/fix their own PC, maybe they are afraid they'll break it. That's all a part of the learning process and you'll never get anywhere if you don't take a risk and attempt to work on them. Most everything I've learned when it comes to upgrading computers is all Trial and Error. If one thing doesn't work out one way, just try it again some other way.
I also have to mention that any of the For Dummies books are worth checking out. Believe it or not, for learning DOS I read DOS For Dummies. For being a Computer Technician DOS is one of the most useful things I've learned. If you don't know it I don't see how anyone could be a very good Technician.

PCs For Dummies, Windows 7 Edition Review

(More customer reviews)Purchased a new computer and Windows XP is no longer an option. Having heard many stories about VISTA, I chose WINDOWS 7. When the computer arrived, the format is very different from what I was use to on XP and being Tech Challenged I ordered this book. It is GREAT!!!!! Gives you step by step help in a language easy to understand. I highly suggest to anyone who is not a Tech sWizard to get this if switching from an old Windows system to WINDOWS 7.

(More customer reviews)This book quickly pinpoints trouble spots that any average PC user may run into. The author's personal style of solving a problem makes the text very user-friendly. For example, I occasionally am most annoyed by suddenly having my re-typing of a word deleting others. I found this problem solved in Section #45== "You may be tapping on a key without realizing you are executing a command--it's like chewing on a pencil or drumming your fingers. I had pressed a key unknowingly and each subsequent word I type deletes the previous one. Very annoying! One day I pressed the Shift Key five times, and a window popped up." In the text is a view of this window "Sticky Keys" and the author notes-- "Just click on the Go to the Ease of Access Center to disable the keyboard shortcut."
Many other examples like this are clearly and briefly given, so that the title of the text is apt! I haven't gotten to the last sections, about adding memory or changing the hard drive, but the author gives good illustrations and makes it sound easy, even for me, an amateur stay-at-home tech person. The Table of Contents lets a reader zoom directly to whatever problem has reared its ugly head, and the illustrations are very helpful. Probably a person who is experienced with computers wouldn't find much new in this book, but for newbies like me, it's most useful.
