My Inventions: The Autobiography of Nikola Tesla Review

The introduction material in this book written by Ben Johnston is well prepared, informative, and brief. It is a good introduction to the rest of the book which is Tesla's writing.
Tesla's own words can be tedious, but hey the language has changed a bit in the last 100 years. He takes a few rabbit trails and talks much of his inventions not what he thinks and feels. I would really like to know why he liked pigeons so much but he never says. What Tesla doesn't say, gives us insights to what is important to him. No serious study of Tesla can neglect this work.

The Complete User's Guide to the Amazing Amazon Kindle (First Generation) Review

The Complete User's Guide to the Amazing Amazon Kindle (First Generation)
Average Reviews:

Informative and expanding, much information that an avid reader-turned-Kindle-reader might otherwise miss. Available elsewhere? Definitely, and those with an urge to tinker will find it. But if your focus is on the books and you are the sort who looks for answers in the user manual, then articles such as this are invaluable.
This is the first review I have ever submitted to Amazon. Must admit that the electronic shouting matches that many of these review lists become puts me off. But the potential for a real paradigm shift in how we use, and value, "cyber access" exists here and the window won't likely stay open long. The more folks learn about the possibilities, the greater the push. Stephen Windwalker appears to be writing for the "typical Kindle buyer" who wants an electronic reader for the convenience of having a lot of books in a small, transportable package. Thoughts of expanded uses are not even entertained in many cases. Without articles like this to inform the conventional user of these possibilities, many will be happy, contented readers and never know other capabilities exist.
Kindle is a terrific way to read books. I started a skeptic, bought my wife one as a gift, and we now have a pair. (She offered to share but I knew she didn't really want to.) We are both voracious readers, several books a week when we aren't being consumed by one work crisis or another. While we both have the tech savvy to figure out anything that is discussed in this article, for a couple dollars we didn't have to. It came instantly to my Kindle at the push of a button. And that is the bottom line for me.
Any information worth having is worth a couple dollars if you can get what you need in a concise, ordered format and if it saves you the time you would have spent in finding it yourself. The more people that have this information, the more clamor there will be to enhance and expand these capabilities, and the sooner the better. And that will make a $2.39 investment seem like a prophetic decision.

I received a Kindle 1 as a birthday gift back in November and followed the simple Amazon directions to download books and then read them. This worked. However, when I went to the Amazon website and read conversations with people that were doing more with the Kindle than I could understand, I purchased Windwalker's book. His ad offered information about "more" ways to use this revolutionary toy and I wanted more. His first book opened the door to understanding how this not just a reader, but a mini computer capable of bringing a huge world of books and information to my fingertips. Now my Kindle experience was great.
By the time Kindle 2 came out, I was way hooked on this product, bought it and of course then immediately read his Kindle 2 information. Although I really enjoyed the struggle related to Kindle 1 (I have been working with computers since the early 80's) - his Kindle 2 book puts readers just a tiny click away from anywhere they want to go and any books they want to read on this marvelous machine. Now the experience was terrific.
Windwalker has made it easy to enjoy all the benefits of the Kindle 1 and 2. His advice and ideas are very valuable and the links are perfect. By the way, I'm a 73 year old woman and I find everything about this technology fantastic.

Radio Handbook, Twenty Third Edition Review

Radio Handbook, Twenty Third Edition
Average Reviews:

The late Bill Orr, W6SAI, was a legend to many of us old timer hams. His books were always practical and helpful. Radio Handbook is no exception. This is a reprint of an older edition of Radio Handbook so its technology looks like 80's vintage. (Get the ARRL Handbook for recent stuff.) This book's strength is tube-type linear amplifiers. That's why I bought it and I'm happy with it. Very practical help and ideas. His general radio theory sections are quite clear as well. For other circuits and devices, I found the material rather dated. But for amps, it's my book!

Droid X For Dummies Review

Droid X For Dummies

I recently bought 3 Droid X phones, one for myself and one for each of my sons. Since I am 60 this new technology is harder to learn then perhaps for others. But thanks to Dan Gookin and his book I am using my new Droid like I've had it for months. His book has a wealth of information and covers everything there is to know about the phone except perhaps how to build your own. What I like most is the color pictures since I am a visual learner. Would I buy another one? Absolutely and in fact I did. The next day I went back to the book store and purchased one for my sons. Thanks from a senior citizen!

CWAP - Certified Wireless Analysis Professional Official Study Guide (Exam PW0-205)

I actually went to the beta CWAP class when it was being introduced. I was amazed and impress with the contribution made to this book by some of the wireless industry experts. The class was taught by Devin Akins who also wrote and contributed to every Planet3 books. I sat next to experts in the protocol fields and was able to learn and steal knowledge from experts.
I was not disappointed with this book at all. It covers basic topics from WEP to 802.1x. If you want to learn the process of authentication and be able to break down the protocols, please get a copy of this book. Even if you do not take the certification test, the knowledge in this book should be added to your library.

Essentials of Radio Wave Propagation (The Cambridge Wireless Essentials Series) Review

Essentials of Radio Wave Propagation (The Cambridge Wireless Essentials Series)
Average Reviews:

I seldom have the desire to write any type of a review for a text that I would not recommend to someone else. However, I feel the need to say that if you are searching for a text to introduce you to radio wave propagation...just keep browsing. This is NOT the one to get. There is really very little of value here, in my humble opinion. This text has very little detail on any aspect of propagation and instead refers the reader to other works, such as the ITU-R publications, for further details, far too often. I was so relieved that I purchased it at a huge discount from a used bookseller.
I recommend the following texts:
Propagation of Radiowaves, 2nd Edition (Electromagnetic Waves)
Radiowave Propagation
Introduction to RF Propagation

Wireless Home Networking For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))

This book is a terrific resource. I knew very little about networks or wireless accessing and just had wireless installed. We were up & running for less than a week before I lost my wireless connection. I LABORED over re-connecting for hours and then days. Pure torture. Even the ADSL guys (as well as the Linksys-router folks) couldn't help us. Finally, I found this book and read it cover to cover. Within 10 minutes of finishing it, I was reconnected, AND I now understand so much about how this system works. Reading this book prior to having wirless installed is like taking your driver's license test prior to driving alone. (And the humor is always uplifting). I definitely would recommend this book!

Phase-Locked Loops for Wireless Communications: Digital, Analog and Optical Implementations Review

Phase-Locked Loops for Wireless Communications: Digital, Analog and Optical Implementations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased, read, and refer to this book. It is good. But different from my other PLL books. On a higher more technical level than the other PLL books which I have reviewed. Reads more like a thesis than the other PLL books. I feel that it covers exactly what the title indicates, more wireless communication and space-based PLL coverage than the other books, except no 'implementations' except at conceptual mathematical level. Not a circuits book. No circuits to copy/use. Much more of a pure PLL communications theory book.

Phase-Locked Loops for Wireless Communications: Digitial,Analog and Optical Implementations, Second Edition presents acomplete tutorial of phase-locked loops from analog implementations todigital and optical designs. The text establishes a thoroughfoundation of continuous-time analysis techniques and maintains aconsistent notation as discrete-time and non-uniform sampling arepresented. New to this edition is a complete treatment of charge pumpsand the complementary sequential phase detector. Another importantchange is the increased use of MATLAB, implemented to providemore familiar graphics and reader-derived phase-locked loopsimulation. Frequency synthesizers and digital divideranalysis/techniques have been added to this second edition. Perhapsmost distinctive is the chapter on optical phase-locked loops thatbegins with sections discussing components such as lasers andphotodetectors and finishing with homodyne and heterodyne loops.Starting with a historical overview, presenting analog, digital, andoptical PLLs, discussing phase noise analysis, and includingcircuits/algorithms for data synchronization, this volume contains newtechniques being used in this field. Highlights of the SecondEdition:
Development of phase-locked loopsfrom analog to digital and optical, with consistent notationthroughout;
Expanded coverage of the loop filters used todesign second and third order PLLs;
Design examples ondelay-locked loops used to synchronize circuits on CPUs and ASICS;
New material on digital dividers that dominate a frequencysynthesizer's noise floor. Techniques to analytically estimate thephase noise of a divider;
Presentation of optical phase-lockedloops with primers on the optical components and fundamentals ofoptical mixing;
Section on automatic frequency control toprovide frequency-locking of the lasers instead of phase-locking;
Presentation of charge pumps, counters, and delay-lockedloops.
The Second Edition includes the essential topics needed bywireless, optics, and the traditional phase-locked loop specialists todesign circuits and software algorithms. All of the material has beenupdated throughout the book.
