(More customer reviews)The late Bill Orr, W6SAI, was a legend to many of us old timer hams. His books were always practical and helpful. Radio Handbook is no exception. This is a reprint of an older edition of Radio Handbook so its technology looks like 80's vintage. (Get the ARRL Handbook for recent stuff.) This book's strength is tube-type linear amplifiers. That's why I bought it and I'm happy with it. Very practical help and ideas. His general radio theory sections are quite clear as well. For other circuits and devices, I found the material rather dated. But for amps, it's my book!

The Radio Amateur's Satellite Handbook (Radio Amateur's Library;, Publication No. 232) Review

(More customer reviews)This book is essential for anyone wanting to work with the Amateur Satellites. It covers the history of various projects, explains the modes of operation, and shows the equipment needed to talk with the birds. Like all the ARRL books, it is easy to follow and clearly written. The only problem I have with the book is that it hasn't been updated since 1997. It doesn't have good information on some of the newer spacecraft. As an example, it talks about the soon to be launched Phase 3D satellite rather than talking about the now orbiting AO-40 (ex Phase 3D) and some of the problems it is having. Still, the technology and techniques are very valid and good for anyone wishing to work with space communications.
In case your are thinking this is difficult to start in, I've had success transmitting to and receiving from the International Space Station using just a handheld transceiver (Kenwood TH-D7A) and either an attic mounted or handheld directional antenna. I've also heard voice from (but not transmitted to) the OSCAR 14 satellite with this same setup. You don't need an equipment setup to rival NASA in order to start with the aspect of the Amateur Radio hobby.

ARRL's Wire Antenna Classics Review

(More customer reviews)This is a collection of wire antenna constructions articles taken mostly from QST from the 1950ties up to 1998. Actually it is a simple compilation of copies of the articles.
I am personally missing a detailed list of the articles and some kind of Index. Otherwise it's great to read these fine articles packed with good ideas, and of cause if your target is set on a wire antenna not much has changed over the last 60 years - all solid information
Further to me it's a great thing to read original articles from G5RV and W3 DZZ - to me this is a first time
This small book is a treasure of gold in a number of different ways

Bill weaves together his exploration of radio through both his experiences since joining the hobby as a boy and the continual development of his conceptualization and resulting understanding of the basics of electronics. With a liberal arts education, Bill's exploration of electronics becomes a passionate pursuit driven by questions not easily explained by standard text book answers. Anyone who has enjoyed listening to a SolderSmoke podcast knows that Bill is a wonderful storyteller. This is a good book for the general public, because it's easy to read. Engineers might use it as a general reference, but probably not as a design guide.

Essentials of Radio Wave Propagation (The Cambridge Wireless Essentials Series) Review

(More customer reviews)I seldom have the desire to write any type of a review for a text that I would not recommend to someone else. However, I feel the need to say that if you are searching for a text to introduce you to radio wave propagation...just keep browsing. This is NOT the one to get. There is really very little of value here, in my humble opinion. This text has very little detail on any aspect of propagation and instead refers the reader to other works, such as the ITU-R publications, for further details, far too often. I was so relieved that I purchased it at a huge discount from a used bookseller.
I recommend the following texts:
Propagation of Radiowaves, 2nd Edition (Electromagnetic Waves)
Radiowave Propagation
Introduction to RF Propagation
