I was first introduced to this book through my professor. After reading this book I had a very good understanding of the material: wave guides, networks, S-parameters, filters, impedence matching, and transmission lines. This book does it all. It is an excellent introductory to intermediate book on Microwave engineering. You can understand the book entirely without getting lost in theory. Pozar does a good job at not confusing the reader, and it provides some real world examples that help the user relate. I myself go to GA Tech, and I recommend any electrical engineering student who is interested in electromagnetics or RF engineering to buy this book. If only because the GA Tech Library only has one copy and it is always checked out.

This book provides an excellent overview of microwave engineering within the industry. It is well written and laid out in an introduction to deployment fashion. Excellent discussion on link budget development and a thorough view of availability versus reliability within the microwave path. I like how the author introduces you to the basic fundamentals of microwave networks and then moves into planning, design, and deployment. If you design or work with microwave radios, this book should be on your shelf as a right hand tool. The book has been an excellent reference to me for developing software and microwave link budgets. Great job!

When I first bought this book, I was very hopeful. The book seemed to cover a lot of relevant material, in a concise fashion. When I tried to read it however, I found it a little bit too much on the concise side. I have read very complicated books with a lot of math before, and I could follow them easier than this "easy" writing style. Almost every subject is covered in other books in more detail and better. Sometimes it's nice to have a simpler book which is an introduction, and that is what I was hoping for, but this just didn't do it for me.I donated the book to the library,as I felt I would never really get too much out of it. This didn't stop me from buying Mr. Razavi's "Design of Analog CMOS ICs " and I liked his tutorial in the IEEE Phase Lock Loop book he edited.I know he can do a better job.

This is the type of book commonly published by Artech House or IEEE Press. It is as if a person who was highly skilled in writing liberal arts prose finds a file cabinet abandoned by a retired engineering manager. The file cabinet is filled with a lifetime eclectic collection of magazine articles, photo copies of sections of books, and reports from subordinates, all of which were never read by the manager because of time restraints. The liberal arts person shuffles the contents together into a book without really understanding what is written. This book is strewn with tables and illustrations which are never referenced in the text. Most of the illustrations are multiple generation photocopies. Equations contain undefined terms. Critical design issues are passed over with one sentence while there is a several page mathematical derivation of the DC output impedance of a BJT. The author infers that it is not necessary to understand what you do as long as you can get the answer from a CAD program. The book perpetuates the urban legend that Gilbert invented a mixer. This topology goes back to at least 1920 and had been implemented with relays, vacuum tubes, specialized vacuum tubes, and discrete transistors. The author references Gilbert's paper which references the discrete transistor version as prior art and then shows how to make a pre-distortion circuit to add to this mixer to obtain a four quadrant linear multiplier. So much for not reading your references. Finally, the book does not explain anything very clearly. people who are not already skilled in RF will not gain any design ability from this book. They will however get a false sense of skill level that will allow them to do basic, simple designs, but not designs that push technology. That is, they could do a day late dollar short design of consumer products, but not military products.
This comment was added in 2007. It seems that Artech House and the IEEE press have become more careful in what they publish. Most of the books published recently by them are edifying to read and I have purchased and enjoyed several of them.

This book covers a wide range of knowledge needed to get started on RF engineering field. It covers background theories in wireless technology, transmission lines, antennas, filters, amplifiers, mixers, oscillators, some modern modulation techniques, and also transceiver architecture.
Although this book does not provide in depth coverage on those topics, it still provides enough background for begineers to get started in radio design with discrete components. Many practical examples are given including low noise amplifier design and practical filter transformation (Kuroda transformation) into microstrips.
One great thing about this book is its completeness from transmitting end to receiving end, which provide readers with better overall picture on what is needed in RF design.
