I really have some difficulty with this book. I have a lot of network design experience and a CCNA, but I need to learn the "Cisco way" of network design. This book is 930 pages long, but I think with a little effort the information within it could have been condensed into under 100 pages. there's so much to read to get to the meat of the subject. And when I look back at the pages I earmared for re-reading later, there are many pages each with just a small amount of info I want to go over again before the exam.
In at least one case, each bullet point in a list was a paragraph long, and the summary at the end of the bullet list was simply a repeat of the last bullet point. It seems that there was a concious effort to "pad out" the book.
The book does not cover all the information needed to pass this intro-level course in design (it refers you out to texts for the next level course up: eg. Building Cisco Multilayer Switch Networks). To my mind, one should not have to purchase reference material for the advanced courses in order to be able to get through the introductory courses.
All in all an overly-hard read and, at times it seems, more focussed on advertising Cisco product and positioning Cisco as a locked-in solution than on helping one through the CCDA exam.
After 570 pages of text, I have little clue as to what kinds of questions will be on the exam to come (at least in terms of the design questions).

Authors Mark Grayson, Kevin Shatzkamer and Klaas Wierenga have done an outstanding job of writing a book that examines the different techniques for building mobility into the Internet.
Authors Grayson, Shatzkamer and Wierenga, begin by defining the mobility market in terms of device proliferation, consumption trends and radio-specific challenges in scaling for massive adoption of the mobile Internet. They also explain the protocols and layers that make up the Internet architecture; as well as, the fundamental problem with that architecture in supporting mobility. The authors continue by describing how users and devices are authenticated for using the network and its applications; in particular, those that are not operated by the operator that the user has a subscription with. Then, they explain the benefits of solving mobility at the data link layer. Next, they provide an overview of a number of network layer solutions for delivering seamless mobility and session continuity. The authors also describe the advantages of integrating mobility functionality into transport/session layer. They continue by describing how the application layer can be enhanced with additional mobility functionality, thus allowing advanced mobility use cases to be supported, including the ability to move media sessions between different devices. Finally, the authors provide an overview of the approaches fro redesigning the Internet architecture to allow better mobility; as well as, a discussion of the pros and cons of some typical examples of those approaches.
This most excellent book takes a look at mobility from a broad perspective of use cases and examines how mobility solutions are in fact pervasive across all layers of the protocol stack. This book is a must have for anyone wanting solid information on IMS. This is some of the best IMS reference materials with only around 300 pages. You can't beat the value this book offers.
The authors do an incredible job in explaining IMS to readers. I enjoyed the layout of this book for the "modular design" it contained within its sessions. The first session of this book is dedicated to high-level architecture and the foundations of IMS. It is easy to understand the values of IMS such as session control, service blending, QoS, flexible charging and the evolution with key elements in control, bearer, and application planes. Once you have a good grasp from session 1, session 2 further breaks down various essences of IMS into components. This is very helpful in getting the background information such as SIP, SDP, MSRP, XML, and Diameter for building IMS serving certain types of purposes.
Session 3 are dedicated to the `enablers' of IMS OMA. These chapters include information on these OMA enablers' design purposes, features, values provided to subscribers and how to implement them. The book is written in an easy to follow layout.
Session 4 is most interesting session by reading various vignettes to get into the contexts of IMS in real world implementations. The IMS service delivery framework are laid out for high-level viewing on what and how IMS new services are designed, introduced and maintained. The authors did a marvelous job on these real-world scenarios to help readers fully understand how IMS relates to everyone's life.
I believe that anyone reading this book will benefit from the information presented, no matter how the depth the readers expect on IMS real world implementations. The book helps in these areas and more. The real bonus of this book is written by three experts from AT&T. It's by far the best IMS book I have ever read. Grab it and read a few pages, you will find how indispensable this book is.
