This book intends to be the de facto handbook for IMS, but it ends up being mostly reference material.
While it has some fairly detailed descriptions of the standards and protocols involved, it does not go beyond the specifications already publicly available, or the methods that some vendors already use. Some chapters read like a translation of technical drafts, while others concerning less defined areas are very high level.
The authors, while doing a good job assembling useful information, probably set out to write this book too early, when IMS was still only a reference framework, without widespread service provider adoption. Furthermore, the corresponding expertise across the industry is missing, thus making this a less elaborate view on the services that IMS would provide, compared to what the book's subtitle would suggest.
If you need a book on IMS right now, and are not happy with the abundance of online materials, buy this book. If you are looking for a comprehensive guide on what IMS means for providers and customers, I personally have not read such a book yet - but even if it has not been released, it is only a matter of time. Keep your eyes peeled for snippets of information coming out of service providers and infrastructure vendors, and for the ongoing debates in the industry around the evolution of the service delivery platform.

If you're looking for an in depth book on AAA and it's associated algorithms, there's no match for this book. Much as I wish I was wrong and that I could replace the book I borrowed from my friend with a cheaper book, I'm afraid I'm about to be forced to shell out the [...] on AAA. And I'm only going to need it as an intermittent reference. There's no math (at least no Greek), but many of the algorithms used to underpin the subject are explained concisely and clearly. It's simply well written and more informative than anything else on the market. I'm a sales engineer and this book was written on the ideal level for me. Technical enough but also abstract enough. Good work sir!

This book stands out amongst the limited titles on IMS,which are really comprehensive in nature and would specially seem very well structured in terms of flow of information to those who have tried to go through endless revisions of 3GPP standards.But where this book disappoints is that it has only and only reffered to 3GPP standards and have got no referrence to 3GPP2 and some delta specifications by Cablelabs for cable service providers.

Cisco Press has published many technical books about their products and about networking in general. But this book is a little atypical in that it seems to have far more detailed content. Also and perhaps pleasantly to some readers, the level of detail is not about an exhaustive explanation of the features of some Cisco product. You could construe this book as a timely discourse on numerous industry efforts at the intersection and integration of mobile networking (which is effectively equivalent to the use of cellphones) and the Internet.
One topic bruited about is the use of femtocells to improve cellular reach; especially inside buildings. Three methods are given - WiMax, UTMS and cdma2000. A chapter gives a detailed scrutiny of the latter.
For the Internet, there is much about IPv6. It seems far easier to handle cellphones and the movement of these via IPv6 than shoehorning the problem into IPv4. The reader might be struck by the idea that this, finally, could be what drives a large scale deployment of IPv6.
We also see that within IPv6, advances have been made. There are details of an improved next generation IPv6. Chapter 4 seems to be a key section of the book. Titled "An IP Refresher", it does not just cover the usual beginner's stuff about v4 and v6, but delves into cutting edge material.
Later portions of the book also explain how the 3G and 4G cellphone levels might evolve and tie into the Internet. The text is a useful complement to these recent offerings on 4g - IP for 4G by Wisely, and 4G Roadmap and Emerging Communication Technologies (Universal Personal Communications) by Kim.

This book is a must have for anyone wanting solid information on IMS. This is some of the best IMS reference materials with only around 300 pages. You can't beat the value this book offers.
The authors do an incredible job in explaining IMS to readers. I enjoyed the layout of this book for the "modular design" it contained within its sessions. The first session of this book is dedicated to high-level architecture and the foundations of IMS. It is easy to understand the values of IMS such as session control, service blending, QoS, flexible charging and the evolution with key elements in control, bearer, and application planes. Once you have a good grasp from session 1, session 2 further breaks down various essences of IMS into components. This is very helpful in getting the background information such as SIP, SDP, MSRP, XML, and Diameter for building IMS serving certain types of purposes.
Session 3 are dedicated to the `enablers' of IMS OMA. These chapters include information on these OMA enablers' design purposes, features, values provided to subscribers and how to implement them. The book is written in an easy to follow layout.
Session 4 is most interesting session by reading various vignettes to get into the contexts of IMS in real world implementations. The IMS service delivery framework are laid out for high-level viewing on what and how IMS new services are designed, introduced and maintained. The authors did a marvelous job on these real-world scenarios to help readers fully understand how IMS relates to everyone's life.
I believe that anyone reading this book will benefit from the information presented, no matter how the depth the readers expect on IMS real world implementations. The book helps in these areas and more. The real bonus of this book is written by three experts from AT&T. It's by far the best IMS book I have ever read. Grab it and read a few pages, you will find how indispensable this book is.
