Teach Yourself VISUALLY Windows 7 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech)) Review

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Windows 7 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech))

I got this book thinking it would have some decent Windows 7 information that was at least an intro to intermediate guide. However, I must say I was kind of surprised at how basic the book truly is. When I say basic, I mean it. It covers things like how to enter text in text boxes, mouse basics, etc. There is very little here that is really dedicated to Windows 7 specific features as most of the book is taken up with just basic computer learning skills for those that have never used a computer OS before or Windows. If you already know how to use Windows XP or Vista and have more knowledge than just beginner skills, you will find the book to be down right mind numbing because it covers nothing of significant use.
The positives I will say about this book is it is one of, if not the best in terms of the color guides for showing information and getting its point across in an easy to understand fashion. This book truly is "visual" and has many photos and examples that are well done. If you are truly a newbie to computers or you are wanting to give this book to someone that is for learning basic computer skills, then this book would be just fine. It fits very well for those that have never used a computer OS before or even perhaps someone that is older and wanting to learn how to use a computer that is Windows 7 based.

Computer Networks (5th Edition) Review

Computer Networks (5th Edition)

The book maintain the classic structure of subjects based on the OSI model (which is good and proven to work for those who learn about networking)...you will notice the author has updated contents in several sections of the book: from entire new paragraphs, going trough the examples to the jokes itself, adapting them to the modern context in which we live.
New interesting topics as RFID and 3g-4g cellular networks are also commented in good detail...I would say not "mile wide, inch deep", but "mile wide, two inches deep"
I do not give them 5 stars because the problems and exercises at the end of each chapter do not have the solution (or at least the correct answer)...why not sharing the information once and for all???...

Computer Networks, 5/e is appropriate for Computer Networking or Introduction to Networking courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, CIS, MIS, and Business Departments.

Tanenbaum takes a structured approach to explaining how networks work from the inside out. He starts with an explanation of the physical layer of networking, computer hardware and transmission systems; then works his way up to network applications. Tanenbaum's in-depth application coverage includes email; the domain name system; the World Wide Web (both client- and server-side); and multimedia (including voice over IP, Internet radio video on demand, video conferencing, and streaming media. Each chapter follows a consistent approach: Tanenbaum presents key principles, then illustrates them utilizing real-world example networks that run through the entire book—the Internet, and wireless networks, including Wireless LANs, broadband wireless and Bluetooth. The Fifth Edition includes a chapter devoted exclusively to network security. The textbook is supplemented by a Solutions Manual, as well as a Website containing PowerPoint slides, art in various forms, and other tools for instruction, including a protocol simulator whereby students can develop and test their own network protocols.

Head First iPhone Development: A Learner's Guide to Creating Objective-C Applications for the iPhone Review

Head First iPhone Development: A Learner's Guide to Creating Objective-C Applications for the iPhone

This is the book you want if you want to build applications for the iPhone, you are an experienced programmer, and if you do not already know Objective C. The only book as good as or better than this one is Beginning iPhone 3 Development: Exploring the iPhone SDK. The first two-thirds of that book guides you through iPhone OS programming in general, concentrating on the display. Later chapters cover more advanced topics. What that book has in detail though, it somewhat lacks in perspective. In other words - it fails to step back and give you the big picture. This head first book excels in the big picture as well as the details.
This head first book covers everything you need to know just as long as programming is not something that is new to you. In particular, object-oriented concepts should be familiar to you as well as programming in a procedural language such as C. The book takes it from there. If you have used the head-first series of books before then you know what you are in for. The book uses cartoons, crossword puzzles, Q&A sessions, fake interviews with devices and programs, and strange looking photographs to make your brain remember what it sees. The book is not a reference book on Objective C, and honestly, if you are going to go far with iPhone application development, then you probably should have a conventional book on that very topic after you finish this book and all of its exercises.
This book also gets you going by building an iPhone app in the first chapter. It will also do odd things that make you think about a design, such as leading you down the wrong path in the design cycle so that you remember the right path. For that very reason it is important to go through this book from beginning to end and do all of the exercises. You won't get the most out of it if you do not. Highly recommended if you are teaching yourself this subject.
The table of contents is not yet listed for this book, so I show that next:
getting started
iPhone app patterns
objective-c for the iPhone
multiple views
plists and modal views
saving, editing, and sorting data
tab bars and core data
migrating and optimizing with core data
camera, map kit, and core location
leftovers
preparing an app for distribution
None of these chapter names will probably mean that much to you until you finish the book. Highly recommended for the experienced programmer who is a novice at writing iPhone applications.

Voice, Video, and Data Network Convergence: Architecture and Design, From VoIP to Wireless Review

Voice, Video, and Data Network Convergence: Architecture and Design, From VoIP to Wireless

This book is ideal for University applications/student use as well as for Systems Engineers (I am one) and (I'd venture to guess) even CTOs as well! It covers the latest standards as well as those currently evolving. My class at UCLA used it as a textbook a couple years back and since graduation in '07 it sits on my desk as a handy resource in the real world. I refer to it at least weekly when I'm in a bind or want to know more about a particular technology.
The previous reviewer must obviously have personal issues with the author or the publishing company - it's not legitimate as this is a well-written, easy to read, and I've found, accurate text.

*Covers the latest standards and those being developed in an ever-evolving field *Provides insight into the latest technology of video and data over wireless networks and how convergence will be a driving force in this industry *Provides an understanding of the true capabilities behind each vendor's solution to allow for informed buying decisions A recent survey of 500 U.S. companies with multiple locations found that 81% are planning to implement IP Telephony on their local area networks (LANs) in 2003, and two-thirds are looking at convergence for their wide area networks (WANs) as well. This includes voice, video and data over hard line and wireless networks. Today, new standards and technologies are being developed to support convergence and voice over IP (VoIP) and Video over IP and wireless. Because convergence covers the voice and data world, it will be critical to understand all of these environments. This book provides detailed information on convergence network models, protocol stacks, routing algorithms, gateways and switches required to support these networks.*Covers the latest standards and those being developed in an ever-evolving field *Provides insight into the latest technology of video and data over wireless networks and how convergence will be a driving force in this industry *Provides an understanding of the true capabilities behind each vendor's solution to allow for informed buying decisions
