(More customer reviews)This is not a book about how to hack the controllers in your car's engine to make it go fast, burn different fuel mixtures, etc. Just like the title says, it is about car computers-and this means everything from actual onboard computers, to audio and video configurations. Like the other books in the "Hack" series, this is not a long narrative about Car PCs, it is simply a book full of 75 projects arranged by topic. Some of the tamer projects include installing headrest video screens, listening to email on the road once you've rigged up your computer to receive free wi-fi, installing a back-up camera and screen, receiving satellite TV, and rigging a free GPS-based navi-system. Of course, since all this stuff is power-heavy, there's also a bunch of hacks on how to strengthen your car's electrical system. To give you an idea, one of the hacks shows how to install a heavier-duty alternator. Throughout the book there are plenty of instructive diagrams, cross references to other relevant hacks in the book, and lots of links to web addresses where further instruction and freeware can be found.

There is a quick start guide that tells you where the power button and a few other buttons are, but after that you're pretty much on your own. This is probably fine for most users who already love the MAC format and bought the iPad as soon as it came out. But as its popularity spreads, more individuals with less experience are likely to buy one-- and this is the perfect guide for them. Teach Yourself Visually iPad follows the format of the other books in this series-- lots of step-by-step illustrations to walk you through every aspect of the iPad. The chapters include Exploring the iPad (which explains every button, the home screen and basic settings), Understanding What You Can Do with Your iPad (which covers apps, music, videos, etc.), Configuring the iPad, Getting the Most from the Internet, etc. The chapters go into detail on how to get email, explains YouTube and other popular internet sites, how to download podcasts, etc. While these are things that many computer-savvy individuals won't need help with-- again, for someone just starting out this could be very helpful.

Home Networking: The Missing Manual Review

(More customer reviews)I wish I had read this book about three months ago. I bought a wireless router and a card for my laptop. I set up the network. I could get on the internet now from the laptop -- I was thrilled.
Then I tried to print. Nothing.
Then I tried file sharing. Nothing.
If I had a new laptop, it would have been no problem, but I have an ancient laptop -- a Pentium 1, 166Mhz machine running Windows 98. And I had no clue what to do.
I'm still not really sure how I got everything to work right. I messed with settings and finally got it working. I can print, and share files. But it took me a lot of mucking around with things that I really didn't feel qualified to muck around with.As I read this book, I kept saying "I should have done THAT!! Why didn't I do THAT? So THAT'S what that does!" Slapped myself on the forehead a few times, too. It was bad -- my head still hurts.
This book breaks the process of setting up a home network down into managable steps. It talks about both Windows and Mac OS setup, and shows easy ways to get the two operating systems talking to each other. It shows how to set up wireless AND regular networks -- it even mentions Powerline networking, and shows how it can be used to extend an existing network. Everything you need to start networking at home is right here, in one volume.
I learned several things that I'm planning on using in the near future. One problem with my home systems is the lack of storage space. This book shows how to set up networked storage using USB hard drives and a Linksys Network Storage Link. I've also been introduced to Apple's AirPort Express, which I would already own if I had seen it before.
This book is essential for anyone who is going to set up a home network. If you've done that already, read the book anyway. You might get some ideas for things that you can do with your network that you hadn't thought of before.

While my network is simple - and getting the AirPort network up and running for my Macs was a breeze - it does involve a DSL modem, a switch, an AirPort base station acting as a bridge to a wired Ethernet network, and several computers, including PCs. I remember spending a fair amount of time when first setting it up to get everything working correctly, especially the link between the wired and wireless network. Negrino and Smith walk the reader through all the steps required to set up and configure an 802.11 network, and cover the sticky issues concerning IP addresses, DHCP addressing and many other acronyms that novice users may be unfamiliar with.
One of the strengths of this book is the authors' tone of voice. Negrino and Smith assume that the reader does not know a lot about the many protocols and acronyms used, and they explain these elements in a cool and patient manner. There is no talking down to the reader, nor is there any obfuscation. The explanations are clear and simple, and readers will be able to set up a wireless network - no matter how complex - with ease.
But the book goes beyond mere WiFi networking, with a thorough presentation of Bluetooth, cellular connectivity, Rendezvous and more. No matter which wireless technologies you want to use with Mac OS X, this book explains them in simple, non-geeky language.

After reading this book, you'll walk away with a complete knowledge of how to create a wireless network. The contents is written in a manner most readers can understand. Technical terms are used but are explained using common terminology.
Having years of computer technical background, I found this book complete in it's information. This is the ideal book for anyone in the computer field. The only drawback in this book becomes clear if all you want to do is a simple task such as creating a wireless network to access the internet. In such a case, to a non technical reader, you would have to dig through countless pages to find what is needed.
I guess it comes down to if you want a book that shows you all aspects of a wireless network or a specific task. This book covers all of it.
