Wireless Communications & Networks (2nd Edition) Review

If there is one word by which I would have to describe this book, it would be: "complete". The author assumes that the reader has nothing but very basic mathematic and scientific training and takes him all the way from first principles in those disciplines to the details of cellular networks, wireless LANs and Bluetooth to mention three of the latter chapters. The ample usage of illustrations, review questions and www-references position this as a high-quality textbook.
Then again, if you are an experienced engineer, looking to solve a concrete problem for the wireless system you are presently sitting in front of, you will find that Stallings' book, because of its breadth of treatment, does not reach the necessary depth. In that case: read one of the many references for further study that the author offers.

CCNA Wireless Official Exam Certification Guide (CCNA IUWNE 640-721) Review

CCNA Wireless Official Exam Certification Guide (CCNA IUWNE 640-721)
Average Reviews:

Perhaps this text would be appropriate for somebody seeking the CCNA Wireless certification, but this book seriously falls short on wireless and radio fundamentals. In the opening chapters the author introduces the concept of phase before he even describes a waveform and its components. It also contains a lot of inaccuracies. He goes into detail about the differences between DSSS bit rates and their associated encoding techniques but barely describes OFDM or 802.11n at all.
For those seeking knowledge on how to pass the CCNA Wireless exam and how to configure Cisco AP components, this book is a necessary acquisition but those who are seeking solid entry knowledge into the world of 802.11 administration should check out the CWNA book from Sybex.

9 months ago, took the ccna-wireless class from a IT training company (Not Globalnettraining), took the Cisco 640-721- failed. Bought Todd Lammle's CCNA-Wireless Study guide on 7/27/10, almost aced the Cisco 640-721 exam on 8/2/10!

CWNA Guide to Wireless LANs (Networking (Course Technology)) Review

CWNA Guide to Wireless LANs (Networking (Course Technology))

am a wireless instructor at a university. This text is a 5-Star quality textbook targeted to the classroom. As such, it contains end-of-chapter exercises and labs. These are very useful if you are preparing for the CWNA exam. It is fully illustrated and covers everything on the CWNA objectives list. FYI...If you are thinking about this book for both the Wireless# and CWNA tests, please note that the Wireless# exam is different, yet similar in some ways. My only gripe about Ciampa's book is that it is very expensive for a paperback. A hardcover would have been nice to cut down on wear and tear, becuase I use it so much.
One more thing...I'd love to see a third edition with detailed updates and coverage of 802.11n and WiMAX.

Wireless Communications: Principles and Practice (2nd Edition) Review

Wireless Communications: Principles and Practice (2nd Edition)

As a lecturer in Mobile Telecommunications I was concerned that this book is light on detail in some places, and authoritatively wrong in others. For example, the author makes basic errors in his description of the GSM logical architecture (particularly with respect to the network databases) and he does not describe the current HR and EFR GSM voice codecs; the section on IS-95 CDMA does not describe soft handoff or cell identification in detail and has not been updated to describe IS-95A. His derivation of Erlang B is also missing a number of key steps. These factors make this textbook unrecommendable for my students. A THOROUGH revision is in order for the next edition.

This is the third book of four in the Cisco's CCNA Exploration. The book is very thorough and covers all areas needed to prepare for the CCNA exam. The quality of the material is very professional, and the writers were very knowledgeable. I recommend this book to everybody who is planning on taking the CCNA exam. The book covers in detail VLAN, VLAN Trunking, Spanning Tree Protocol, and many other important areas of Layer 2 and layer 3 switching configuration. The book also has a very low price compared to other books of the same quality.
