Programming the Mobile Web Review

The purpose of this book is to identify best practices when creating web applications that will be consumed by mobile web browsers. It not only does an excellent job outlining those best practices, but it's incredibly up to date in its content. Not only is there information related to "retina display" available in iPhone 4, but there is also a brief discussion about how Palm has been purchased by HP (both events occurred only a few months ago).
The book begins by providing the most comprehensive discussion of mobile browsers that I've ever seen. The author furthers this discussion throughout the book by providing some of the most detailed information on the compatibility between these various mobile browsers and the standards that each one supports. The book warrants a purchase simply for this information alone.
The author continues by providing examples of supported doctypes, coding markup, and CSS. The author demonstrates CSS differences between the major mobile browsers, and demonstrates some libraries to make web applications look more like native applications.
There is a lot of attention given to Safari, and rightly so, since it is one of the most popular mobile browsers available. However, the reader should be prepared for this fact.
All in all, I found this to be a terrific reference to the state of mobile browsers and a great reference to assist in maximizing compatibility among mobile browsers. I'd highly recommend this for any developer who is creating mobile web applications. By following the guidelines outlined in this book, your applications will be able to effectively reach the largest mobile population possible.

Microwave Radio Links: From Theory to Design (Wiley Series in Telecommunications and Signal Processing) Review

Microwave Radio Links: From Theory to Design (Wiley Series in Telecommunications and Signal Processing)

I am using the first edition of this book in my Telecommunication Engineering course. The author deserves my congratulations. This book is well organized, has clear explanations and makes an efficient compilation of the ITU-R recommendations, pointing precisely the relevant aspects when necessary. The book has also a practical focus, clearly showing real world and market experience, not only laboratory developed knowledge, still keeping well balanced level of math. This second edition certainly improves the already well-done work. I recommend it.

IEEE 802.11 Handbook: A Designer's Companion Review

IEEE 802.11 Handbook: A Designer's Companion
Average Reviews:

If you are an engineer with need to quickly understand the details of the 802.11 protocol, but do not want to plow through hundreds of pages of the IEEE specification, this book is for you. It is a good concise treatment of the details of the protocol. It is written for practicing telecommunications engineers. It is not 'wireless 101' and it is not for someone who wants to know how to set up a home or enterprise 802.11 network. It does not describe what unratified (as of this writing) 802.11e, 802.11 g, 802.11i specs are. It does cover the 802.11a and 802.11b phy layer descriptions.
Unfortunately, the lack of a detailed Table of Contents, lack of any index at all, a super sparce list of acronyms hurt the readability. This also makes its use as a quick reference not so quick. I also think that the figures are too simple and that better use of detailed figures would help the book considerably. However, the actual IEEE spec has very good figures. This book and the IEEE spec are side by side companions on my bookshelf and complement each other nicely.
I have found other books to date on the subject much too soft as far as technical detail on the protocol mechanisms. The authors participated in the design of 802.11 and know how to present the most salient features for embedded engineers. If you want a concise explanation of the 802.11 spec, and already have a fundamental understanding of how ethernet works, this is the book for you. So, I give it 4/5 stars on applicability of this content, but not for literary style and construct.
If you are more interested in what is a wireless LAN, what affects the signal propagation, how do you plan to put in an 802.11 LAN in your enterprise, and a little overview on the protocol, buy the James T. Geier book

The first generation 802.11 wireless market, once struggling to expand, has spread from largely vertical applications such as healthcare, point of sale, and inventory management to become much more broad as a general networking technology being deployed in offices, schools, hotel guest rooms, airport departure areas, airplane cabins, entertainment venues, coffee shops, restaurants, and homes. This has led to the tremendous growth of new sources of IEEE 802.11 devices. IEEE 802.11 equipment is now moving into its second stage, where the wireless LAN is being treated as a large wireless communication system. As a system, there is more to consider than simply the communication over the air between a single access point and the associated mobile devices. This has lead to innovative changes in the equipment that makes up a wireless LAN. The IEEE 802.11 Handbook: A Designer's Companion, Second Edition is for the system network architects, hardware engineers and software engineers at the heart of this second stage in the evolution of 802.11 wireless LANs and for those designers that will take 802.11 to the next stage.

Our investment club kept hearing about WiMAX so we did some research and came across this book. We are not "techies" and found this book to be real helpful in understanding the future implications for our investment portfolios (phone companies, cable TV companies, etc) in regardds to WiMAX.
If you have a nickel invested in a telecommunications related company, you MUST read this book. It earned our five stars rating!

Wi-MAX is a big deal because it's cheaper, smaller, simpler and easier to use than any existing broadband option (DSL, cable, fiber, 3G wireless) – it also bypasses the existing wired infrastructure and legacy service providers (i.e. the phone and cable companies). This book provides a basic technical introduction to the IEEE standard, allowing engineers, technologists, and decision-makers to ascertain how this hugely disruptive technology is going to affect their businesses.

ARRL's Wire Antenna Classics Review

ARRL's Wire Antenna Classics

This is a collection of wire antenna constructions articles taken mostly from QST from the 1950ties up to 1998. Actually it is a simple compilation of copies of the articles.
I am personally missing a detailed list of the articles and some kind of Index. Otherwise it's great to read these fine articles packed with good ideas, and of cause if your target is set on a wire antenna not much has changed over the last 60 years - all solid information
Further to me it's a great thing to read original articles from G5RV and W3 DZZ - to me this is a first time
This small book is a treasure of gold in a number of different ways

Droid 2 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) Review

Droid 2 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am writing this review for those who are not already smartphone users (which includes me). Perhaps the most important thing to point out is that this book is intended to serve as a reference, not necessarily to be read cover-to-cover, which at over 300 pages might seem like a lot to have to plow through. Thankfully, each chapter is self-contained, so you can jump around to find those that are best suited to addressing your interests.
Basically, I found this book easy to read, nicely illustrated (with color photographs), and definitely informative. (The author has written many books on technology topics, including the very first "For Dummies" book--on DOS--way back in 1991.) The book is organized in six parts:
Part I: Droid 2: The Sequel. This is your basic introduction and familiarization.
Part II: Phone 101. How to use your Droid 2 as a phone.
Part III: Beyond Telephone Communications. Text messaging, sending and receiving emails, web browsing, social media, networks.
Part IV: More than a Mere Mortal Cell Phone. Addresses other things you can do, such as find locations on a map, get verbal driving directions, shoot videos, and play music and games.
Part V: Hither and Thither. Using your phone overseas, making international calls, customizing for maintenance and troubleshooting.
Part VI: The Part of Tens. A traditional end for "For Dummies" books. Tips, tricks, things to remember, and some of the author's favorite apps.
In short, although even an experienced smartphone user might find some useful information and tips in this book, I am not sure these users would find the book worth the time, effort or price. However, if you are new to smartphones (and if you just got a Droid 2), then this book is well written, easy to use and sufficiently complete to merit your careful consideration. I am glad to have it.
