Cellular/PCs Management Review

Bedell's book is the perfect go-between bridging the complex technologies behind wireless communications and the practical essentials of concern when deploying wireless as a business. While the book is crammed with detail, the author's tone and style make it remain easily digestible. You would be hard pressed to find this quality of information presented so readily elsewhere. There is something for everyone. Engineers would learn caveats like the application forms necessary to erect an antenna while business people receive a lesson on the finer points of directional gain. This breadth is one of the considerations that makes Cellular/PCS Management so special. As a practitioner in this vibrant industry, I credit this book with helping round out my knowledge tremendously. I am confident it will serve you as well.

IP for 4G Review

IP for 4G

Currently, various telecom operators throughout the world are involved in building out 3g mobile systems. But a so-called 4g has been mooted by various parties. What is this 4g? And what might be the prospects of running the Internet Protocol over it? Wisely explores these questions in this recent book (2009).
The tone is somewhat informal, which may not be to some readers' tastes, so you've been warned.
Much of the book summarises many details about current 3g and wireless LANs. It is definitely a technical discussion. But part of the value that Wisely provides the reader is he steps back from the hugely verbose descriptions of many wireless schemes. To an engineering reader, enough operational details are given for you to appreciate the gists of the systems.
From a business standpoint, the key value might be in the final chapter. Assessments are offered for future mobile services and systems. Though scattered thru the book are other related observations. We see that some previous predictions by telecos have been awry. Notably that SMS was originally intended for diagnostics by telecom engineers, yet it has grown immensely as a popular mass mode of communication and a huge revenue source.
Another observation is that 4g, at least initially, might not involve IPv6. The latter keeps getting pushed further into the future. So if you are devising an IP over 4g application, you might design for IPv4, at least for the initial years of deployment.
Things have changed since I reviewed another book on 4g, 2 years ago, 4G Roadmap and Emerging Communication Technologies (Universal Personal Communications). That text had much to say on Digital Rights Management. In contrast, Wisely omits this topic. Possibly because the intervening time has led to an overall deprecation of DRM.
One thing that Wisely chronicles well is how the current telecos face a conundrum. They want 4g to be a major new revenue stream. But if they offer IP over 4g, there is a danger that they will be reduced to dumb pipes, just supplying commodity access to the Internet. Whereupon Internet based services like search engines and auction sites might garner most of the profits, as they have done with fixed Internet access. The telecos don't want to end up like the ISPs! Hence the possible rise of walled gardens with restricted access.
How will all this play out?

SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol, Second Edition Review

SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a working developer that recently became engaged in a J2EE project where needed to design and build a SIP server for a call center requiring all manner of specialized behaviors. Needless to say I needed to learn all about the ins and outs of SIP as this system would be SIP VoIP based.
I started out trying to use the various RFCs related to the SIP and SDP protocols. Well, I could spend an entire review about how miserable it is to trudge through typical RFC documentation. Online hyperlinked documentation is indeed in some respects a miracle of our modern cyber information age. Yet it's not exactly perfect. In many respects I maintain that the traditional book remains solidly the highest technological invention that mankind has yet conceived - especially now that I can compare book form information vs. its online hyperlinked and searchable alternative.
When it comes to learning and having ready access to the relevant information I'd take a book, such as "SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol" hands down vs the RFCs. I was making slow and painful progress yet once I had this book in hand, I could quickly whip around in it and cross reference the material presented in it by flipping pages, look for things via by scanning the table of contents, or dereferencing the index. Finally I started to rapidly accelerate my endeavor.
Besides the mechanics of accessing the relevant information, this book was also solidly presented by the author. He indeed has a authoritative command of the subject matter. Many of the scenarios he presents of how SIP is deployed and used were directly relevant to my particular project. It was particularly important to see the full dialog of SIP/SDP protocol exchange and the diagrams that accompanied this were very helpful. Nice visual diagrams of this manner are not to be found in the bland RFC material.
I came to amazon.com and read up on all the reviews posted for this title. Several of them gave the book a low rating. I sensed that what these people were after was a more digestible higher level presentation of the subject matter. There is an O'Reilly title on VoIP that I think might serve some of these folks better in that regard. However, this book on SIP also does a fair job of presenting SIP in light of some of the other VoIP related standards, etc. It's just that the main thrust of this book is to convey the technical understanding of SIP so that one can program systems based on it.
So if one is a software developer and needs to learn the technical ins and outs of SIP then this books is definitely the one to get. It beats using the RFCs by themselves by many leagues.

This revised edition of "SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol" gives you a thorough and up-to-date understanding of this revolutionary protocol for call signalling and IP telephony. The second edition includes brand new discussions on the use of SIP for wireless multimedia communications. It explains how SIP is powerful "rendezvous" protocol that leverages mobility and presence to allow users to communicate using different devices, modes and services anywhere they are connected to the Internet. You learn why SIP has been chosen by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Program for wireless cell phones) as the core signalling, presence and instant messaging protocol.

Cell Phone Science: What Happens When You Call and Why (Barbara Guth Worlds of Wonder Science Series for Young Readers) Review

Ok, I admit I have not read it yet. But it's because I can't get my copy back! I loaned the book to the science teacher at my son's school, and asked her to take a look to see what she thought. She liked what she saw, and gave it to a 3rd grader who loves science to see if he liked it and could understand it. He did, so much so that he begged to keep it to finish! Clearly it's a hit! I bought another copy for the school to keep in the science class. And eventually, I and my 4th grader will get our copy back to read!

Their buzzes, beeps, bells, and tunes have disrupted countless classes, movies, and meals; public auditoriums now have signs posted prominently asking people to turn their cell phones off; cities such as Santa Fe have banned their use in automobiles. But these little connection gadgets have become ubiquitous because they are so useful many would blanch at the thought of losing their cell phone. Cell phones are useful because of the science, technology, and design that are blended to make them function.
In this work, authors Michele Sequeira and Michael Westphal help young people explore this now-commonplace, socially important gadget that connects today s youth with their friends. The underlying science and technologies, and some of the history that has influenced the development of cell phones, are discussed. Emphasis is given to building science and technology concepts through simple analogies with commonplace items and ideas.
