Inside WAP: Programming Applications with WML and WMLScript Review

Previous reviews are somewhat misleading: One claims that software provided with the book comes without a licence - in fact the readme on the CD gives clear and simple instructions for obtaining the necessary licence (takes about 60 seconds). Another criticizes the book for only testing applications for use with Nokia and Ericsson handsets - in fact, as a glance at the back cover could tell you, every example in the book was also tested on a Phone.com (as was) emulator.

Programming Java 2 Micro Edition for Symbian OS: A developer's guide to MIDP 2.0 (Symbian Press) Review

Programming Java 2 Micro Edition for Symbian OS: A developer's guide to MIDP 2.0 (Symbian Press)
Average Reviews:

Haven't read the whole book since I already knew MIDP 1.0, and the only reason I bought this one was that at the time I bought it was the only book I could find on MIDP 2.0. This rating will only be based on the more advanced stuff (APIs in MIDP 2.0). The author spend a lot of time talking about you can do with MIDP 2.0 and how to code some different applications which I think is covered pretty well. However, the applications I have looked at does not work. There are even classes that are missing, as well as other errors in the examples. I don't think anyone learning java wants to deal with this. "Teach yourself java with J2ME in 21 days" is a very good book if you know a little bit of programming, but are new to j2me.

Handheld Usability Review

Handheld Usability
Average Reviews:

I am an experienced interface designer who has never designed for a handheld. So, when I faced a new project that would be deployed on a handheld, I looked here to further my education. This is the only book I could find that is specific to handhelds.
When I was considering this book I read seven glowing reviews, and one total pan. The pan got it right. This book may be more useful for someone who knows very little about interaction design, usability testing, prototyping, and all that, and who isn't interested in gaining more than a superficial understanding of these topics. (If you are new to usability design, you'll find a much better place to start with Mayhew's "The Usability Engineering Lifecycle: A Practitioner's Handbook for User Interface Design.") If, however, you are a usability professional looking for insight on how you need to think differently now that your screen is the size of a Post-it note, wait for the next book to be written. I could have written this book, and the sum of my handheld experience is that I own a Palm and a cell phone.

M Commerce: Technologies, Services, and Business Models Review

M Commerce: Technologies, Services, and Business Models
Average Reviews:

Sadeh's "M-Commerce: Technologies, Services and Business Models" is an outstanding introduction to this, the next step in the e-business revolution.
Sadeh's writing style is very simple to understand and follow and he does an outstanding job of relating the material to everyday life through good, real-life examples. He cites current m-commerce usage in Japan and Europe and relates how it could be used here at home. Among his prime examples are NTTDoComo's I-mode, Nordea's WAP as well as vendors such as Ericsson, Nokia, and AT&T. You also get a good grounding in the technology and history of the mobile industry as well as best practice business tips that industry innovators have used to gain their competitive advantage. Overall, this is a great look at the technologies behind m-commerce and the various types of services it can afford.
Here is the listing of topics Sadeh addresses:
1.The Buzz Behind M-Commerce: Proliferation of mobile devices, personalized and location-sensitive services, new usage scenarios, etc
2.The M-Commerce Value Chain: Business models, content providers, aggregators, software vendors, equipment vendors, network operators
3.The Transition to 3G: 2G technologies, 2.5G technologies, wireless architecture
4.The Mobile Internet: TCP/IP on wired and mobile Internet, WAP architecture, WAP protocols
5.Mobile Security and Payment: Cryptography, digital signature, certificate authorities, public and private key encryption
6.M-Commerce Services: Information services, directory services, banking and trading, e-tailing, e-ticketing, entertainment, business applications
7.Next-Gen M-Commerce: Personalized services, location-sensitive services, global positioning services
Overall, this book is extremely easy to read and more importantly, a good learning tool. This book was used as the text for an m-commerce course I took during the fall of 2002. Whether you are studying this subject independently or whether you are an instructor looking to use this book for your course, you cannot go wrong with Sadeh's "M-Commerce: Technologies, Services and Business Models."

True, books on this type of subject are almost obsolete as fast as they get published because the field is changing so rapidly. However this monograph gives an excellent point of departure as health care professionals make the giant leap from the inefficient and ineffective world of paper to a world where the information they need is in their hands when they need it. The basics of a Personal Area Network and how it can interface with modern GPS technologies to save lives and take modern health care to the next level make M-Health an important first stop on the road to implementing mobile solutions.

Using the iPhone (covers 3G, 3Gs and 4 running iOS4) Review

Using the iPhone (covers 3G, 3Gs and 4 running iOS4)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked this book up for a friend and this is what he had to say:
"It is a guide to basic iPhone operation with step by step instructions for most
tasks. I don't think this is widely needed due to the iPhone being fairly intuitive or
at least consistent in design. But the book is much more explicit than the
small "manual" included with the iPhone, so some will find value.

There are a handful of interesting tips that are not obvious, but I would have
liked more. In my case, it was marginally helpful for a different reason. I did not yet
have access to an iPhone and needed to know more about it for a work-related project.
The purchase includes online access to audio and video clips. Videos can be
helpful for some things, but I'd much rather read a transcript of the audio. I
mean, I got the book, right? I can obviously read.

That said, after 2 days of various registration attempts, I was unable to
actually access the online media.

Note that Apple does have a fairly detailed user guide online and available on
the phone itself.
Suggest 3 stars as it mostly delivers what it claims."

Wiring Home Networks: How to Plan, Design, and Install Home Computer, Video, Telephone, and Audio Systems Review

Wiring Home Networks: How to Plan, Design, and Install Home Computer, Video, Telephone, and Audio Systems
Average Reviews:

I rewired my house for cable, phone and a computer network and this book covered it all. It did take a couple of rereadings on the part about how to do the final terminations (there are a lot of colors and wires), and there are two wiring standards, but the book did cover it. I'm not a technician, but with a little forethought and common sense I got all 3 systems working the first time.
