Primary focus of this book is protocols for 3G/UMTS networks. This book covers 3G concepts in some detail but pays attention mostly on network side and protocols. Which makes this book a must to have together with Kaaranen's and/or Korhonen's book. Contents is light in maths and easy to read. Very good diagrams and plain English. A concise and easy to access content makes this book very useful. Read at once and get the idea how it works. Warmly recommended.

Local Positioning Systems: LBS Applications and Services Review

Local Positioning Systems: LBS Applications and Services
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My greatest difficulty in using this book was locating the positions of the useful technical information scattered among all of the bad writing and poor document structure. Hiring an English major to clean up the writing, and a tech writer to revise the structure, could have helped bring the useful content out. Many sentences are poorly structured, individual paragraphs contain unrelated topics, sections seem to wander, acronyms go either undefined or repeatedly defined within adjacent paragraphs and sentences, some paragraphs repeat sentences almost verbatim, and there is an uneven mix of useful technical information, useful marketing information, and marketing/management drivel. There were parenthetical comments (like this) injected all over the book (or at least many parts). Some serious editing could have cut down the length. Here is an example:
"Whichever world model you use, information related to position must somehow be stored, modeled and mapped. The storage is typically handled in a spatial database; the modeling depends on the algorithms that can be associated with the world model. The mapping is the role of the mapping infrastructure, and to create those, location (or space or world) models are essential. It is also about the content or context data that can be associated with that location data for specific location-based services."
One might expect a hierarchical exposition on a) storage, b) modeling, and c) mapping after this apparently introductory paragraph. Unfortunately, this apparently introductory paragraph pops up in the middle of a subsection in the middle of a section in the middle of a chapter in the middle of the book, to be followed by a similar paragraph that wanders around a tangentially related set of topics.
The best thing about this book is its collection of links to web resources with better writing and clearer documentation. The book is worth about 1/2 of the pages it presents and 1/2 of its cost to the buyer, so I'd give it 2.5 stars if I could. Managers will love it.

Local Positioning Systems: LBS Applications and Services explores the possible approaches and technologies to location problems including people and asset tracking, mobile resource management, public safety, and handset location-based services. The book examines several indoor positioning systems, providing detailed case studies of existing applications and their requirements, and shows how to set them up. Other chapters are dedicated to position computation algorithms using different signal metrics and determination methods, 2D/3D indoor map data and location models, indoor navigation, system components and how they work, privacy, deployment issues, and standards. In detail, the book explains the steps for deploying a location-enabled network, including doing a site-survey, creating a positioning model and floor maps, and access point placement and configuration. Also presented is a classification for network-based and ad-hoc positioning systems, and a framework for developing indoor LBS services.
This comprehensive guide will be invaluable to students and lecturers in the area of wireless computing. It will also be an enabling resource to developers and researchers seeking to expand their knowledge in this field.

Core Data for iOS: Developing Data-Driven Applications for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch Review

Core Data for iOS: Developing Data-Driven Applications for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch

Note: I did receive the example code from the author of this book. He is working with the Publisher to get the code available on their website. Meantime he noted he is glad to make it available simply by emailing him a request.
Got my copy yesterday and have been skimming through it. Recently started another book on the same topic by APress. Both appear to be good books but this one I have been waiting over a year for. I am not disappointed in the wait because the book is up to date on the latest iOS at the time of publishing. Just glancing through the book, I can tell it is written by two iOS veteran programmers who are there to guide the reader with best practices and a lot of things to watch out for. For example, there is a section describing various ways of storing binary large objects (BLOBS) and the authors present a handful of options and explain when each can be useful and what to watch out for with respect to memory management and future needs to adjust the object model with new versions.
I plan to update this review after working through the sample code and reading the book cover to cover. But for now, I can say that in the handful of pages I have read over, the book has well paid for itself in helping me understand how to write a professional class application. I am fairly new to iPhone development having only a single app for sale on Apple's App Store. If I had this book during development of that application, it would be a far better app in many respects related to data storage. Looking forward to my next app which will use Core Data with the help provided in this book. Thanks to the authors!
2nd Update (7/6/11)
I felt compelled to update my review and also to comment on the other reviewer who noted that chapter 5 is confusing. Well, that reviewer states correctly that chapter five takes chapter 4 and reworks the code. Chapter five shows how to use an NSFetchedResultsController, a class that works as a go-between of in the example a SQLite database and the in-memory object context "object graph". It is a difficult concept to grasp but nonetheless, I think the authors do a good job showing the standard methods used by Core Data. I think the authors intent is to build up to showing the more excellent way of working with data by way of showing a more primitive way first. Chapter four used a basic array to hold the data but that would not scale well with an application that had hundreds or thousands of data objects. Yes they could have probably went straight into the chapter 5 content but in my opinion, since the whole subject is rather complex to grasp, leaving out chapter 4 would have made it very difficult to understand the technology explained in chapters five and onward. I am now nearing the end of this book and still feel that it was a very good investment. I am about to jump back over to completing the Apress book on Core Data which I bought at the same time as this book and will later post back if I feel this book is as good or better. I find this book to be a very valuable desk reference. Both books do require a good understanding of Objective-C and are written with the expectation that the reader is well versed in using the XCode IDE. So if you don't know Objective-C or the basics of working in XCode, I recommend getting that foundation before jumping into either of these books.

RF and Digital Signal Processing for Software-Defined Radio: A Multi-Standard Multi-Mode Approach Review

RF and Digital Signal Processing for Software-Defined Radio: A Multi-Standard Multi-Mode Approach

Some obvious errors worry me. For instance, the equations in Section 7.3.1 (Loop Detector) are not consistent with the diagram of the system on which they are based: Figure 7.9 (the AGC Loop). One glaring problem is that a signal sample v(n) enters a delay z^-1 and comes out as a future sample v(n+1). This does not inspire confidence. Furthermore, trying to correct an author's errors while trying to learn the material is unwanted, extra and misapplied effort.

Digital Interactive TV and Metadata: Future Broadcast Multimedia (Signals and Communication Technology) Review

Digital Interactive TV and Metadata: Future Broadcast Multimedia (Signals and Communication Technology)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

One way to determine the level of growth of a research field is to assess the availability of relevant conferences, journals and books. In particular, the latter is a good measure of the maturity of the field, since they provide an overview of a critical mass of published work. In the interactive TV field, there been more than a few conferences and special issues in journals, but books are still scarce. So, it was a pleasant surprise to discover the book "Digital Interactive TV and Metadata", which was written by a very active team of researchers from the Digital Media Institute at the Tampere University of Technology, in Finland.
The first part of the book (Theory) begins with a short overview of DTV standards and the respective applications types that are enabled by this basic set of industry standards. Next, the book surveys the fields of Web, multimedia, DTV, in order to provide an extensive overview of metadata standards, which is the core focus of this work. Having laid the background theory, the authors present the "Digital Broadcast Item Model", which they have helped define, in the context of the MPEG21 standard. The first part of the book closes with a discussion of the implementation requirements for metadata in DTV systems.
The second part of the book (Application) begins with an interdisciplinary analysis of DTV in the fields of business strategy, consumer behaviour and narrative, all of which are put in a metadata context at the end of the chapter. Next, the authors describe the application of metadata in several DTV fields, such as digital rights management, production, interactive TV content, and personalization. The book closes with a discussion of a few innovative applications and future scenarios for DTV.
Overall, it is a rather accessible technical book for DTV and metadata. It is suitable for researchers and developers of DTV systems. In a field that is in constant growth it would have run the risk of missing recent developments, but the book is coupled with a web site that offers additional and up-to-date information (http://www.digitalbroadcastitem.tv/). Moreover, the website offers complementary slides, handouts and exercises that can be used for teaching a DTV and metadata module in university programs.
