(More customer reviews)At the time I'm writing this there's one review below written by Mr. Stump who is spiteful because he wiped out his Windows file system.
So let me offer some advice:
This book mentions a program called Wubi that will allow you to install Ubuntu from within Windows (in MINUTES I might add) and won't wipe out your MBR or your files because you ignorantly hit "Format disk" without knowing exactly what it meant.
Now, I have tried to use Linux a few times in the past and the learning curve makes it difficult to operate. I'm incredibly proficient with PCs running Windows, but Linux has always been pretty difficult for me.
This book has helped clear up many of the things I didn't understand before. Currently I'm only in Chapter 11 but I've learned more about running Linux in the last four hours reading this book than I ever have before.
Give it a shot!
Don't be like Mr. Stump and wipe out your file system.
Maybe do a little research first. Learn what partitioning is. Maybe use another Linux disc called Parted Magic to resize and partition your drive properly using the right file system.
Maybe not blame a good book and give it one star for your own ignorant actions.

Computer Networks, Fifth Edition: A Systems Approach (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Networking) Review

(More customer reviews)A few months ago, I needed to quickly re-educate myself about Weighted Fair Queueing (WFQ). I have a bunch of networking texts on my bookshelf, but I automatically reached for the first edition of Peterson & Davie. I got what I needed: a clear, thorough, yet self-contained discussion. I even got a little extra from the text, which pointed me at other related topics and raised some open problems.
It's true that several of those other books cover WFQ, but I've learned over the last few years that I might as well start with Peterson & Davie, because I usually end up there. They cover almost all of the interesting topics in computer networks, and at just the right level of depth for a quick introduction or refresher. (The authors wrote this as a textbook, and I don't doubt that it would also be an excellent foundation for a graduate level course.) I'm glad to see the second edition, because they've included new material, as well as expanding some of the existing coverage.
This is not the book for exhaustive and definitive coverage of every network protocol; to get a fuller story, readers should turn to the concise list of references cited at the end of each chapter. (In fact, I found at least one mistake in their coverage of HTTP, an example that simply won't work, which is repeated in exercise 24 of chapter 9 -- some students might find this confusing.) But into a book that one can actually lift, Peterson and Davie have crammed a remarkable breadth and depth of detail, written with a clarity often missing from the primary source material.

(More customer reviews)One of my networking classes for IST required this book. I've read chapters 1,2,3,4,5,6, & 12. I actually enjoy reading this textbook and look forward to reading more chapters. Other students in my class enjoy reading it too.
It goes into just enough details about the electronics behind the scene but nothing to extensive. It also provides a great overview about networks, without over welling the reader with tedious facts. The book starts out about the OSI model and then walks the reader through each layer.
It is a great book and I would encourage any instructor seeking a textbook to test this one out, your students will be glad you did. *Also useful for someone interested in networking for the first time or someone who wants to see the whole picture.

So many books are just "cookie-cutter" types that merely regurgitate the same exam prep information found in all the others. I needed a textbook that went beyond that.
The A+ Guide to Hardware (and it's companion book, A+ Guide to Software), by Jean Andrews, is that textbook. I'm very happy with it's accuracy and currency and the students actually read it! The text is very understandable and well written. My students are passing the practice exams with flying colors and several have received their A+ Certification as a result of this excellent text.
I highly recommend this text for anyone desiring to understand and pass the A+ Certification exam!

All in all a great value and just what I was looking for--a review of all topics covered in the ccna curriculum.

CompTIA Security+ Review Guide, Includes CD: Exam SY0-301 Review

(More customer reviews)Update 9/12/2011: I passed the exam today; 833/900. Not stellar but OK. There were questions on the exam that were not found in any of the three books I used. Many questions were poorly worded or didn't contain enough information to properly answer the question. I found that to be true with both A+ and Net+. Aside from that, I still found this book to be excellent. Use it along with the Mike Meyers Passport book and use it for cross referencing. Unlike A+ or Net+, the Sec+ exam is pure memorization with little problem solving. Skip the monstrous Sybex book. It has way too much information not pertinent to the exam. This book is right on target but contains some errors that you will want to cross-reference with the Passport book.

I haven't taken the test yet but I thought I might review this book before and after the test. As best that I can tell, there are only three SY0-301 books available right now and I think I have all three: The Sybex book by Emmett Dulaney which I don't like, the Mike Meyers Passport book (really written by T. J. Samuell), which I like, and this one. What I really like about this book is that it follows the Security+ objectives exactly. The other books you would literally have to cut apart and rearrange them to get them in the order of the objectives. However, I guess the reasoning behind that is that if you follow the objectives exactly, there are topics (SQL injection for example) that aren't fully defined until later in the objectives. Before you start studying, go to CompTIA website and print out the objectives. You will find a lot of repetition in the objectives, which probably is why the other two books are so out of order. However, this book ignores that, and does repeat itself, which is good. I would not use this book alone to study. I decided to take a two book approach (as I have always done for A+ and Network+) using the Passport book as a first read and now this book to type up my note sheet, following the objectives in order. That way if you see a topic that hasn't been defined yet in this book, you will know what it is already from the Passport book. I haven't looked at the chapter review questions yet or the CD so I can't comment on those. The CD's are usually a disappointment anyway and nothing like the real exam. I like to do those after I have completed and studied my note sheet.
Pros: Follow objectives exactly. "Understand" sections give a concise one or two sentence definition review that is useful for note sheets. Most topics are clear and concise without extraneous information. Excellent diagrams.
Cons: Some topics are a bit confusing or not developed enough. Use a two-book approach.
Definitely worth your money.
