If you want to learn wireless and mobile commerce development this is the best place to start. The 34 lessons cover the absolute basics of "what is ... ?" to actual coding. It uses audio, code examples and more resources than you can possibly get through in a lifetime. Better, the web site that the authors put up to support the book provides even more material.
I like the way that authors cover all technologies with no favoritism. There is something for every developer and platform, including Palm, Pocket PC, WAP, WML/WMLScript, Web Clipping, i-Mode, Bluetooth, XML, J2ME, .NET, Qualcomm BREW. The audio is over 9 hours, and over 10 thousand lines of code is provided to play with and learn from. If you don't have the time or budget for training this is a great way to learn on your own time at a reasonable cost.

Signals and Systems Laboratory with MATLAB Review

Signals and Systems Laboratory with MATLAB

This book provides a very efficient way to the direct adoption of fundamental concepts and the implementation of advanced techniques in Signal Processing (SP).
Although one can find plenty of books in the market covering aspects of SP in a pure theoretical sense and also several others teaching the MATLAB language itself in a function-to-function basis, however it is very difficult to identify a single handbook oriented mainly toward the direct implementation of SP techniques. Since SP is a prerequisite for many scientific fields of engineering and other applied sciences, it is very frequent that many times we cannot proceed very easily in the completion of a task or a project, since basic concepts related to the signal nature are missing (e.g. Frequency Response, Sampling Theory, Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) etc). On the other hand, several people interested in the area, especially students, find it really difficult to follow the mathematic manipulations found in the literature or being taught in the class, since they cannot "play" with the signal in a try-and-error way.
This book is novel in the sense that it smoothly bridges the gap between theory of SP and practice in terms of implementation through simple MATLAB commands. The reader can easily grab a concept related to SP, either simple or advanced, by studying the corresponding compact theoretical background (without being confused with generalities or unnecessary details) and looking at the provided examples along with the given graphs in order to visualize the effect of the SP action. Additionally, with just a few commands typed in the MATLAB Command Window, he/she can effortlessly reproduce the same results that can be used as a basis for further processing. However, it is evident, that if the potential reader wants to focus much further on a specific concept/technique, then this material has to be accompanied by a more theoretical oriented SP book.
I absolutely recommend this handbook to everyone that can understand the value of the top-to-bottom approach in the study!

After spending the last seven months researching many sources of information about electromagnetic radiation, I wanted a source that I could share with others to help them understand what I had learned so they could make intelligent informed decisions about their lives and the lives of their children. I have found such a source in this book.

The reader of this book can get an overview of the EMF radiation subject from personal experiences and from worldwide researchers and experts. Also, there are specific suggestions for evaluating one's environment, reducing one's personal radiation exposure, and suggestions for relating to the larger societal challenges.

The presentation is user-friendly. One is not overwhelmed in one's learning process, but assisted in the relaxed friendly style of the author, the open format, the simple headings and the clear organization. This is a good introductory source of information for family, friends, co-workers, those who work in libraries, schools, health centers, and government.

Because an estimated three percent of the world's populations is already electro-magnetically sensitive, and brain tumors are the leading cancer cause of death for children, there is an urgency in educating humans to reduce this invisible danger in their lives. This book serves this purpose.

Radiation Rescue: 4 steps to safeguard your family from the other inconvenient truth - the health hazards of wireless technology
Prominent physicians and eminent scientists around the world are raising the alarm about the adverse health effects of wireless technology - cell phones, PDAs, wireless Internet access, headsets and more.
Most assume that if something is on the market it must be safe. Surely, this wireless technology was pre-market tested before we flooded our homes, offices, schools and cities? No, it was not tested for safety - and now leading scientists have the proof: it is not. And the government standards we rely on to protect us are out-dated and not relevant to this type of exposure - their 'safe" levels have been shown to cause biological harm.
Nor is there any government or industry post-market surveillance to monitor adverse health effects.People of all ages rely on these increasingly high-powered devices. It's not only business people, as it was not that long ago. Parents provide their young children with cell phones believing it ensures their safety. Young adults - most have never had a corded landline - chat and/or text endlessly with pals around the country. On-the-go soccer moms tap away on their PDA's while waiting for the children. Many parents installed wireless baby monitors to keep their infants safe. It is crucial that these consumers be informed, that they know the proven dangers, and the proven solutions.
To protect our families, to save our health, we don't have to give up the high-tech gadgets we rely on, and love; we do need to use them differently. K. Crofton shows us how in Radiation Rescue.
In clear, easy-to-understand language K. Crofton gives readers the details, tools, coaching and resources they need to assess, prevent, and heal from the electro-magnetic radiation exposure that surrounds us all.
An engaging narrative style will be consistent throughout the book, with technical information, references, research, and preventive measures for the healthy population. Interventions of value are also provided for people with related symptoms, and peer-reviewed studies and clinical protocols are referenced for their doctors. This informal, interactive style - written in scientifically accurate yet non-technical language - is well suited to readers of all ages

802.11 Demystified: Wi-Fi Made Easy (Telecommunications) Review

802.11 Demystified: Wi-Fi Made Easy (Telecommunications)
Average Reviews:

The newest technology for networking is wireless and the protocol that covers this is 802.11. In just over 280 pages I found a wealth of information that not only simplifies the concepts but also helped me understand how this new technology will enhance networking as we know it.

What the authors do in this book, which I haven't seen in any others is breakdown the protocol first, explaining how the different levels of 802.11, BlueTooth and 3G work. This includes 802.11, 11A, 11B and 11G, each having a specific purpose and function.

I found that not only is there different types of protocols but also hardware and carriers for wireless LANs as well, the book does a good job of distinguishing each from the other. The authors also cover the process of implementation and planning which makes this a fairly well rounded manual.

One thing I like most about the book was the coverage of the applications you can use and what groups are already using the technology. While this book isn't written to any certification per say, this book will be a handy reference for the CWNA exam and beyond

The 802.11 family of standards is quickly emerging as the wireless LAN technology of choice, and knowing how these standards fit in the technical and business hierarchy has suddenly become "must know" - and very lucrative - information. In "802.11 Demystified", industry insider James LaRocca provides the technical information necessary to understand the standards and also examines them from a real world product trends and regulations viewpoint. Indispensable for decision makers, such as network planners, IT executives, technology product managers, application designers, technical sales and marketing representatives, and anyone else who requires a firm grasp of 802.11 wireless LAN technology and the wireless industry, this guide: explains how to make informed decisions about the implementation of 802.11-based products and services; provides an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of 802.11 and all of its flavors (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, etc.); details how 802.11 is deployed to reduce LAN access costs while providing more applications for the end user; addresses 802.11's underlying technology, including RF implementations, network topologies, mobility management, and data security; discusses the relationship of 802.11 to Bluetooth, broadband, and 3G wireless networks; and covers bottom-line costs, competitors, prospects, compatibility, security, administration, and interoperability.

Frontiers in Antennas: Next Generation Design & Engineering Review

Frontiers in Antennas: Next Generation Design and Engineering

A most welcome book on recent developments in antenna theory and practice, fully justifying use of the term "Frontiers" in the title. Perhaps the closest that comes to this book in coverage of modern topics is Volakis's Handbook, now four years old. Modern applications of this classical field are emerging at a fast pace - largely spurred by the growth of wireless communications technology. In one handy volume one finds an encyclopedic coverage of modern antenna types - including ultra-wideband antenna arrays, smart antennas, Vivaldi arrays, artificial magnetic conductors, metamaterial antennas, leaky-wave antennas, plasma antennas and reconfigurable antennas; along with a select coverage of numerical modeling and optimizing techniques and of emerging applications in medicine, including ingestible capsule antennas! The book has a lovely cover and a spine that adorns my shelf along with classics like Schelkunoff and Friis, Silver, Kraus, Collin, Hansen, Stutzman and Thiele, Elliott, and Balanis, to name only a few.
The book is clearly meant for select readers - such as a graduate student with a background of EM fields and waves who is looking for a topic for research in antennas, or is in the midst of it. In general, the book will serve as a great reference for any one who has more than a casual interest in antennas.
Thanks, Dr. Gross, for bringing out such a nice book!
