No FREE connections near enough to connect to. (I live in the country) But...I did setup a network between myself and my son who lives about a quarter of a mile away. We farm together so it's nice to be able to share our accounting program. We tried it over the phone once, but it was just too slow.

On my end, I used an old satellite dish that had been disconnected for years. He built the wifi cannon and aimed it in my direction. We did it just like the book says and the computers connected on the first try. It took about fifteen minutes to fine-tune the connection. I think I may even be able to get on the Net through his satellite hookup.

5***** are not nearly enough!

FREE Internet means exactly that...FREE INTERNET!This book describes in detail, how for a few dollars, you can build high-gain WI-FI antennas from parts you can find at your local hardware store. These antennas will allow you to 'reach out' and pickup those FREE Internet connections that are scattered across almost every community in the world. It's fun! It's easy! And it could save you from $25 to $60 a month in Internet service charges. Over a year's time, you're looking at $300 to $700+ in savings. Most of these antennas can be built for less than $15 in parts. The most powerful one, the 'WI-FI CANnon' takes about an hour to build and costs a whopping $11. If you don't already have a USB adapter, add another $15 or so. That's still less than you'd probably pay for the average broadband connection- EVERY month! To track down these FREE wireless connections, I've listed several websites where you can log in and find the 'hotspots' in your area. These 'hotspots' include WI-FI provided by local governments, libraries, Universities, park departments, hotels, motels, restaurants, RV parks, visitor centers, etc., and the list goes on and on. The websites are updated daily with new 'hotspots' appearing all the time. Are you having trouble getting an Internet signal to every room in your house or outside on the patio? I've included a chapter that shows you how to build a simple, cheap, ($1) WI-FI reflector that will solve these problems. You can build it in about ten minutes using cardboard and aluminum foil! Also included is a chapter on how to stop hackers, neighbors or anyone else from logging onto 'your' wireless connection. If you're tired of paying for Internet...FREE Internet could help you to get off the Internet's "money-go-round" and start saving money instead of spending it! FREE Internet is also available on Amazon as a Kindle ebook. Visit my webpage for more information http://www.randybenjamin.com

Summary
In today's media environment all communication experts need to become well acquainted with the new and future technologies that impact our society. This book showcases the the new technologies and how they work as well as their importance in the media world today.
The book starts off by shining light on communication today. Since we are living in the communication revolution new and existing technologies are influencing the communication industry and society for example the latest generation of PC's which can produce multimedia presentations. Optical disk is covered, which offered increased storage capabilities.
Digital communication systems are explored as flexible communication channels that can carry information ranging from computer data to digitized voice and video.
DSL and Cable Modems have become a phenom which allow the user to receive data at the speeds up to 50 times faster than a 28.8kbps modem. As digital equipment is massed produced manufacturing cost are reduced and become increasingly cost efficient to build and maintain.
The PC has made it possible for us to complete jobs ranging form processing letters to creating spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations.
The microcomputer which is also called today laptops and notebook computers are very convenient for student on the go as well as professional men and woman.
With this new technology it makes it easier to take daily work with you where ever you may be. It also doesn't hurt that prices are falling because of its sophistication.
Alexander Graham Bell the inventor of the telephone used light to transmit sound. it wasn't until the twentieth century that it was used as a tool which was transformed in to a practical communication system. Two developments made way for this advancement such as the perfection of the laser and the manufacturing of hair thin glass lines called fiber optic lines. when combined they help create a light wave communication systems which beams of light are used to carry or transmit information.
A goal of the communication industry is to provide viewers with more control over programming choices for example pay per view. You are able view new movie release just by a push of the button. It makes it more convenient for consumers to watch movie form their own home instead of waiting in line to rent a movie at Blockbuster.
Satellite communication has also become a part of everyday life. we can make international phone calls as easily as local calls down the street. The capability to exchange information is made possible by satellite. Plans for the next generation of communication satellite have been drafted. The space craft will improve on current designs and carry on-board switching and processing equipment.
Optical disk have emerged as an important information storage tool in the 1980's. Today optical storage include video disk, CD's, CD-Rs, CDIs, DVDs and CD Roms.
High Definition Television also known as HDTV was introduced as the new television standard. its display would visually approach the quality of film, and the system would support an enhanced audio signal. color tv is not the is not for the jones's anymore.
Digital Audio Broadcasting was pioneered in Canada and Europe, digital audio broadcasting can deliver a CD quality relay by satellite. This service could be extended to car owners through a small roof mounted dish
I loved this book because it had valuable information for comm tech students. I highly recommend this book as it would be a good value to any journalist or communication major because it can serve as a learning and research tool in their future.

Introduction to Information Systems: Supporting and Transforming Business Review

Introduction to Information Systems: Supporting and Transforming Business
Average Reviews:

The book was purchased in conjunction with taking a college business course. The book is excellent for this purpose and for those wishing to study the topic but it is not a casual read. It is strong on information and communications technology in business that support the enormous changes in this area over the past few decades. It is not so strong on database and other program usage, etc., and I found recommended supplemental readings (from articles older than the date of publication of the book) helpful in studying this area so it is perhaps better as part of an organized course than for self-study.

CCNP SWITCH 642-813 Official Certification Guide (Exam Certification Guide) Review

CCNP SWITCH 642-813 Official Certification Guide (Exam Certification Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just took and failed the new 642-813 exam primarily based on study with this book, a lot of lab work with actual Cisco equipment and practice exams, including the exam on the CD in the book and the Ex-Sim Max exams (which "guarantee" you'll pass the test if you can pass them). In the past, for other Cisco tests, I've found the Official Certification Guides to be very comprehensive and provide almost more material than you need to past the tests. However this guide is not a good representation of what's on the test (or practice exams) and vice versa. I went into the test feeling extremely confident and ended up guessing on many questions and the simulation questions where much more difficult than those found on the BCMSN test. I'm an MCSE, CCNA and ITIL certified IT professional who has been working in this field for over 15 years, and I've never felt so prepared for a test and then performed so poorly on the actual exam. I'm not saying don't buy this book, I'm just saying do NOT depend on it to give you the material you need to pass the exam. This should NOT be the Cisco Official Exam Certification Guide.

Motorola XOOM For Dummies Review

Motorola XOOM For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this book prior to publication and was pleasantly surprised to receive it sooner than anticipated. I ordered this book because the downloadable user's manual from Motorola falls way short of hitting the target. I want to begin with the fact that I thought I had figured out just about everything there was to find in the XOOM which I am a really big fan of. I was sure wrong. This book has more tips, hints and solid information than I could ever have imagined. The author suggests the book as a reference rather than a sit down and read. However, I did sit down and read the whole thing cover to cover with my XOOM in my lap. I could only read a page or two before I had to try something new or change a setting that I didn't know about. The author clearly knows the XOOM and all of it's ins and outs as well as it's warts. After having read this book and having applied much of the content I value my XOOM even more than ever. This book clearly added much value. The pictures and layout are excellent and the 5th Wave cartoons that begin many sections just add to the enjoyment. The authors dry humor and wit added to the fun of reading and exploring.
After reading, I had two questions that weren't answered in the book. I e-mailed the author and received a reply overnight that answered them both. If you want a book that will enhance your XOOM experience, this is the one.

CCNA Certification All-In-One For Dummies Review

CCNA Certification All-In-One For Dummies

I've read a bit more than halfway through it so far. This book is very informative and well written. It's a perfect study guide for Cisco CCNA certification. It also contains a lot of information about Cisco products, networking best practices and advice, a lot of tips and tricks (this guy obviously knows what he's talking about).
I consider myself a beginner/intermediate in networking and so far, it's been quite easy to understand the concepts explained. Plus all this info will probably be useful as reference ongoing. It even covers newer stuff like those sexy Cisco IP phones that you see on all TV shows now.
I like the way the author explains things, for example I have heard my colleagues speak about EtherChannel and port trunks and VLANs... all this sounded like rocket science to me, until I read an example that compares EtherChannel and port trunks and VLANs to a freeway overpass in the VLAN chapter. Now I get it!!! Also, the diagrams in the book make it very easy to understand some of the more advanced stuff.
This book has been very helpful so far. It helps me understand networking stuff that felt intimidating before. I am quite confident about the CCNA test now. I'll probably use the tip and tricks and best practices ongoing as a reference. I highly recommend this book.
