Unlike most other references on the market, this next-generation resource goes well beyond Bluetooth specifications and thoroughly examines different implementation approaches - as taught by a "master instructor." This book discusses Bluetooth in detail, covering both operational characteristics as well as its use as a wireless communications system. It addresses the coexistence of Bluetooth with other wireless networks and provides information on the significant security problems that exist when communicating without wires. It is based on 2 very popular and highly effective courses the author has been teaching for more than a year.

The book is very structured and gives an excellent overview about all major mobile standards, technologies and markets (Europe,US and Japan). I give it 4 stars because it was written 1997 so that the market data are not up to date. A 1999 edition would clearly have 5 stars. Anyway it's a buy.

Bluetooth For Java Review

Bluetooth For Java
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bluetooth is a short range (max range of 30-300 feet) wireless communications protocol. JSR-82 is a Bluetooth API for Java that allows Bluetooth enabled devices talk to each other using the Java programs. Using Bluetooth, a PDA could talk to a printer and ask for a document to be printed or two Bluetooth enabled PDAs could exchange Java objects. Even if you know nothing about Bluetooth or wireless communications, this book will give you enough information to get started.
The book starts with an examination of Bluetooth and the terminology you need to know to understand Bluetooth enabled devices. It then gets into the basics of the Bluetooth API for Java and developing programs using J2ME MIDP. Chapters cover creating a Bluetooth print server, passing objects between Bluetooth devices, and securing messages between devices. The authors discuss the PC software available to simulate two Bluetooth devices talking to each other so that you can develop an application without having two Bluetooth devices sitting on your desk. The final chapters covers topics such as Jini and Ericsson BlipNet. The book contains many well commented code samples demonstrating how to use the Bluetooth API.
The book is very clear and concise. The book reads as if it was written by a couple of enthusiastic Bluetooth developers anxious to share the technology. And they do an excellent job of doing exactly that. The book is well written and interesting. I started the book knowing almost nothing about Bluetooth but now I feel confident that I can develop Bluetooth applications. If you have any interest in Bluetooth then I can recommend this book as an excellent resource.

Microsoft® Mobile Development Handbook Review

Microsoft® Mobile Development Handbook

Trust me, I've read them all going back to 2001 and I've written two of them myself. This is as broad and deep as it gets when it comes to managed code development on Windows Mobile. This should come as no surprise as it was written by the Windows Mobile MVP "Dream Team" of Andy Wigley, Peter Foot and Daniel "The Moth" Moth (now at Microsoft). Not only is this one of the first books to cover the .NET Compact Framework 2.0 and SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition, it even gives the reader coverage of Visual Studio 2008, and .NET Compact Framework 3.5 technologies such as WCF, LINQ, Compression, and "on-device" Unit Tests.
This book provides superb coverage of Security Programming where it shows the reader how to encrypt data with AES and RSA plus the signing of exe's and dll's. If you're interesting developing games or UI's that can't be created with the controls found in the Visual Studio Toolbox, the two chapters on Graphics and Direct3D Mobile are unparalleled. As someone who has a personal interest in the sucess of games on Windows Mobile using the .NET Compact Framework as a consistent game development runtime, this book serves as the launch pad for such endeavors. Whether you're an ISV looking to build the next killer app, a corporate developer tasked with mobilizing your line of business applications, a consultant that needs to aquire mobile development skills, or a game development house looking to take advantage of the explosive growth of the Windows Mobile platform, I highly recommend you get this book!

Palm webOS Review

Palm webOS

It is a good book, but the errata is just too much. You can't even get the first few lines of code to work because they won't fix the file names. Basically, WebOS made an engine change in their file naming schema after the book was published. Therefore the entire book uses naming conventions that won't work. I've spent hours trying to find all the instances of incorrect file name reference to no avail.
Wait for another book to come out or until they fix this one.

A Note from the Author and from O'Reilly Media about what this book does--and doesn't--do: Palm webOS is a brand new platform and represents a very different type of operating system where the web runtime is used as the basis for the UI and Application model. Palm and O'Reilly felt that it was important to have a book available to help developers get a basic understanding of the new Palm platform at the time that the SDK was released; this timing played a major role in the content and structure of the book. Ideally this book would have been a complete reference of the new platform but that wasn't possible since the content was written at the same time as the software SDK was being developed by the Palm engineering team. Thebook does provide a complete overview of Palm webOS, a thorough description of the application model and gives details on many key design concepts. There are descriptions and examples of UI widgets, services, storage, notifications, dashboards and background applications, serving as a great introduction but not as a definitive source. The book uses a simple News reader application to illustrate the technical descriptions but the examples are not intended to serve as a cookbook tutorial. Experienced developers should be able to use the examples to build up a working application chapter by chapter but others may not find the loose descriptions adequate for recreating the application unaided. Over time, these different needs will be filled by other books, but in the meantime we hope that this book will serve a valuable role introducing developers to webOS and giving them a way of getting started with webOS application development. A second printing of the book will update any original coverage obsoleted by subsequent Mojo SDK builds. For owners of the original printing of the book, all of these updates are posted on the "View/Submit Errata" link (please see left-hand column of this web page). Thanks for understanding that book publishing and coverage of rapidly moving technologies can sometimes be an inexact science; we knew there'd be a need for a book such as Palm webOS: The Insider's Guide to Developing Applications in JavaScript using the Palm MojoT Framework, and there's certainly no better person to write that book that Mitch Allen; that said, we understand that because it is such a new operating system and SDK, there would (and will continue to be) changes that at best can't be documented and explored until new printings of the books are released. In the meantime we will be diligent in posting updates to this book's O'Reilly Media catalog page.
Description This is the official guide to building native JavaScript applications for Palm's new mobile operating system, Palm® webOS™. Written by Palm's software chief technology officer along with the Palm webOS development team, Palm webOS provides a complete tutorial on the design principles, architecture, UI, tools, and services necessary to develop webOS applications-including the Mojo JavaScript framework and Palm's SDK. Palm webOS is designed to support a fast and superb user experience using established web standards, so if you're familiar with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, you're ready to build applications for any webOS-based device, including the Palm Pre. You'll gain expertise, chapter by chapter, as you build a working mobile application through the course of the book. You'll also learn how to extend existing web apps to work with the new generation of mobile phones.

Handbook of Optimization in Telecommunications Review

Handbook of Optimization in Telecommunications
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Much of the handbook concerns network design and the many optimisation issues that arise. Thus linear programming figures prominently as an important optimisation method.
For the actual networks, they are now mostly optical fibers, as copper networks are being actively phased out. Cellular networks also are heavily discussed. Here, optimisation problems often involve finding optimal placements of base stations, subject to geographical and estimated traffic loads.
Various routing methods are discussed for switching packets across a network. Some of these have been used for years. Traffic load projections for future years are given. An important problem is building out sufficient capacity to handle these loads. Very nontrivial and expensive topic.

Fundamentals of LTE (Prentice Hall Communications Engineering and Emerging Technologies Series) Review

Fundamentals of LTE (Prentice Hall Communications Engineering and Emerging Technologies Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an RF Engineer, tasked with optimizing the radio link between the phone and the tower (or in LTE terminology, the User Equipment and e-Node B). Admittedly, this is the first BOOK about LTE I have read. Without other perspective, I give it a 3 star rating because of how useful it will be to me in my role. This is a great reference text for LTE--detailed as it is--on the background considerations and ALL the possibilities and thought that went into the LTE standard, but it's really over my head! It has little information, probably quite understandably, about vendor implementation and how to solve practical issues. What I needed to learn from the book could be reduced to 50 pages instead of 383, that's why I'll keep it on my shelf as a reference text, just in case. But otherwise I've taken extensive notes, which is really all I need.
The author(s) is a good teacher; he keeps re-expressing relevant points previously covered at the appropriate time in each lesson, and gives good summaries at the end of each chapter. The book is thoroughly indexed, and the text of each chapter points the reader to where other matters are more fully explained in other chapters/sections. Though it has a very useful list of acronyms, about 10 important acronyms are not on the list (an oversight by the editors). But the book could really benefit (I could really benefit) from also having a glossary, it would be worth extending the page count to 400. I suggest others on my level take advantage of the authors pedagogical style and the book's index in the following manner: start with the summary at the end of each chapter and if you see something you want to dig into, then go into the chapter for more details or use the index to find the actual lesson. By this means you can extract the most information with the least investment of time. Not all books are written well enough to use (or trust) this method to cover the material. This one is.

The Definitive Guide to LTE Technology
Long-Term Evolution (LTE) is the next step in the GSM evolutionary path beyond 3G technology, and it is strongly positioned to be the dominant global standard for 4G cellular networks. LTE also represents the first generation of cellular networks to be based on a flat IP architecture and is designed to seamlessly support a variety of different services, such as broadband data, voice, and multicast video. Its design incorporates many of the key innovations of digital communication, such as MIMO (multiple input multiple output) and OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access), that mandate new skills to plan, build, and deploy an LTE network.

In Fundamentals of LTE, four leading experts from academia and industry explain the technical foundations of LTE in a tutorial style— providing a comprehensive overview of the standards. Following the same approach that made their recent Fundamentals of WiMAX successful, the authors offer a complete framework for understanding and evaluating LTE.

Topics include

Cellular wireless history and evolution: Technical advances, market drivers, and foundational networking and communications technologies
Multicarrier modulation theory and practice: OFDM system design, peak-to-average power ratios, and SC-FDE solutions
Frequency Domain Multiple Access: OFDMA downlinks, SC-FDMA uplinks, resource allocation, and LTE-specific implementation
Multiple antenna techniques and tradeoffs: spatial diversity, interference cancellation, spatial multiplexing, and multiuser/networked MIMO
LTE standard overview: air interface protocol, channel structure, and physical layers
Downlink and uplink transport channel processing: channel encoding, modulation mapping, Hybrid ARQ, multi-antenna processing, and more
Physical/MAC layer procedures and scheduling: channel-aware scheduling, closed/open-loop multi-antenna processing, and more
Packet flow, radio resource, and mobility management: RLC, PDCP, RRM, and LTE radio access network mobility/handoff procedures

The Mobile Marketing Handbook: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Dynamic Mobile Marketing Campaigns Review

The Mobile Marketing Handbook: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Dynamic Mobile Marketing Campaigns
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're looking to learn about mobile marketing - I highly recommend buying this book, it provides a great introduction to mobile marketing. And where Kim can't get in depth on certain topics, she provides resources that you can utilize to get more information.
She provides great information on how to determine if your target demographic aligns well with the mobile crowd and whether or not it is worth pursuing. She provides great demographic hints related to both culture and age that I wasn't aware of.
Also, she effectively presents all the different players that need to come into play for a successful mobile marketing campaign - like short code providers, aggregators, text message companies and more. You can't just start a mobile campaign without having your ducks in a row, and Kim tells you what you need to consider before starting. Although I have created mobile websites in the past, I hadn't considered all of these factors when it came to effectively marketing a mobile website.
The only reason I'm giving this boof 4 stars instead of 5 is because I thought it was a bit light on content in some areas - especially related to mobile search. Since this is the area that most interests me I would have liked more insight about pay-per-call, click-to-call, and examples of campaigns that actually had success. I would have liked to have seen screenshots of AdWords for setting up a mobile campaign and how ads look on a mobile browser. I would have liked to have seen the Google mobile search interface - and I am curious why Google mobile search defaults to web results instead of mobile (at least for me). But I do realize that I'm being a bit nitpicky and that in order to do all of this for each content area would have resulted in a 2000 page book.
Overall, if you're interested in mobile marketing, I highly recommend this book. While it can't get into the depth I would like in certain areas, it provides a fantastic jumping off point as well as links to plenty of resources to get the answers that you need.

Windows Phone 7 Companion Review

Windows Phone 7 Companion
Average Reviews:

It doesn't matter if you've owned your phone for a week or a month, this book is for you. The author does an excellent job of explaining the ins and outs of the newest Microsoft Windows Phone operating system. It's complete with easy-to-follow diagrams and pictures that easily explain the tasks being described. You're sure to learn something from this gem, no matter what you're trying to do.
From initial setup, and getting your contacts organized, through personalization and daily use, he's got it covered in full detail. Pick up this book and you're soon to find out how well-written it is, and how easy one of these phones is to use.
In fact, after he helps you get your contacts organized, he walks you through making a telephone call with the device, and shows you the various buttons associated with that task. He makes it all easy, and shows you everything you need to know.
Since these phones are based so heavily on the newer Microsoft Zune media players, there's a large section devoted to the media functions on the phone. It helps you understand everything from installing the Zune desktop to listening to the radio on your phone.
He effortlessly explains the camera application, and the new features and functionality associated with it. He also tells you about Microsoft's easy accessibility to the camera, as seen in the skydiving commercials so popular on TV. And using the camera is just the beginning, he tells you how to use the online photo sharing services as well that are so nicely integrated with your new phone.
Matthew tells you how to use the GPS functionality built into the phone, and teaches you how to use the device for navigation and routing purposes. He also explains how to connect to others using Xbox Live and play games with them while on the move. There's even a small section explaining some of the other features and functions available in the Xbox Live Marketplace. And he also explains how to use the Microsoft Office applications included on the phone, Microsoft Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, and even SharePoint. Next, he explains how to download more applications from the Marketplace, if you should wish to add something more to your phone. And finally, he even gives you some troubleshooting assistance, should you run into difficulty.
All in all, this is an excellent book, whether you're a new user, or someone who's had the phone for a while. I highly recommend it.

You can use this to call people or numbers, find destinations through Bing Maps, or launch applications on your device. As you build up your collection of apps, you may find this to be the faster and more efficient option to control your device.

Quick Calling: You can call people in your Call History or people who are pinned to Start with just two simple taps. Tap on the Phone tile, and then tap the phone icon to the left of their number in the Call History. If you tap their name, you will open up their contact card instead. If they are one of your Start tiles, tap the tile and then tap Call.

Change Your Start Background: I have had several people ask me about this since it isn't easy to find. If you tap and hold on a photo there is an option to set it as wallpaper, but this is the wallpaper for the lock screen only. Changing the background image in the Pictures hub will also change the picture on your Startscreen.Simply tap and hold on the main Pictures hub page, and select to change the background.

Use Outline View to Navigate: Within Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, you can simply tap the Outline icon and quickly navigate to other sections, spreadsheets, or slides within Office Mobile 2010.

Let Them Know You Will be Late: If you have appointments set up that have attendees, you will see an option in the bottom menu (access by tapping the More three-dot icon) that shows a person running as an icon. If you tap this, you will see the quick option to inform other attendees you will be late.
