I originally borrowed this book from a friend, before purchasing it, and found it incredibly useful in learning about the Canon Speedlite. It's a great read, and a great reference book, going over how to use the flash in real world situations, and the results from using it. It goes over all the Canon Speedlite systems, so you won't be left out. Even if you use one particular flash, you should know your options, this book goes over those options.

Security of Information and Communication Networks (IEEE Press Series on Information & Communication Networks Security) Review

Security of Information and Communication Networks (IEEE Press Series on Information and Communication Networks Security)
Average Reviews:

This book was evidently written in haste with little editing. There are too many errors, grammatical and technical, throughout the book; e.g. the numerical work in 8.2.1 (page 176) is incorrect. Chapter 2, Mathematical Foundations, should be longer, with more examples and exercises for the reader who would be exposed to this material for the first time. There are also errors in this chapter; e.g. on page 43, line 11, "random" should be "prime".

Information and communications security is a hot topic in private industry as well as in government agencies. This book provides a complete conceptual treatment of securing information and transporting it over a secure network in a manner that does not require a strong mathematical background. It stresses why information security is important, what is being done about it, how it applies to networks, and an overview of its key issues. It is written for anyone who needs to understand these important topics at a conceptual rather than a technical level.

I passed my exam within three weeks of study, using only this book. The book is easy to understand and most of the chapters are short. Some of the labs in the book don't require Window's Sever 2008 R2 (Which I don't have access). 80% of them can be done using Window's 7. A great first stepping stone for networking.

Kindle Free for All: How to Get Millions of Free Kindle Books and Other Free Content With or Without an Amazon Kindle Review

Kindle Free for All: How to Get Millions of Free Kindle Books and Other Free Content With or Without an Amazon Kindle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wasn't expecting much for the price, but I've got to say that I really didn't get my money's worth.
Like many Kindle owners, I kept seeing this title pop-up everywhere. My initial reaction was that it was a scam - some guy trying to con as many people into buying a cheap book as possible (hey, if 10,000 people buy a book for a few bucks, it all adds up, right?).
Turns out there's actually quite a bit of content here. I didn't find it particularly useful, but there are lots of words - don't worry that you're only going to get a two-pager with a few web links. That's not the case.
After reading through this, though, I was left with a few thoughts I hope my fellow Kindle readers will appreciate:
1) It's not a scam, but let's be clear that advertising for the author's website/blog, "Kindle Nation" is probably a big reason this book exists. I can understand pitching it a bit up-front (nothing wrong with a bit of self-promotion), but there's an entire chapter in the middle of the book entitled, "How to Contact Kindle Nation"...
2) It's the Kindle-owner feel-good book of the year! Way too much of this "book" focuses on telling you how great your Kindle is. I agree, of course. The Kindle is awesome, but most Kindle owners should know this without having to read a book about it. :) It's kind of like buying a new TV, and then going out to buy a book about how great your new TV is...Oh, and this new edition talks about getting this free content WITHOUT NEEDING A KINDLE!!! If you pay any attention to the Amazon website, you'll already know that there are Kindle apps for all kinds of devices... No need to buy a book to tell you that.
3) I didn't actually learn anything. The vast majority of information in this book is available on Amazon's Kindle website or in the Kindle manual for free - and it doesn't even provide full end-to-end, step-by-step instructions for most things...you'll still need the manual. The few truly 'new' topics (e.g. Calibre) are pretty easy to find by Googling "Kindle".
4) Not well-written. I'm not an author (and anyone reading my review will probably agree), but the author is just so damn verbose it's not funny. And it's not like the extras words make the steps you need to go through to get the free content easier to understand (that's what bullets are for - and there aren't a lot of those in this book). This is written in a style that makes you feel you're in a 3-hour, one-sided conversation...
Don't get me wrong - some people may well find it useful to buy this.
If your friends all have iPads and you want some talking points around what's great about your Kindle so you can still show your face at parties - this book is for you.
If you're technologically challenged and need someone to hold your hand through Kindle Basics, don't like reading things 'on the web' and you're finding the manual a bit hard to understand - this book is for you.
If you love Kindle Nation and are looking for ways to subsidize it - this book is for you.
If you enjoyed the rambling prose of this review and didn't feel that I could have got my point across simply by saying, "This book sucked" - this book is for you. :)
I gave it two stars instead of one because it does deliver what it claims to and I didn't find any spelling mistakes.
But seriously folks...like...wow.

Gaynor does a very good job of explaining the practical details for SIP. The book covers the RF design aspects quite well, but is also very "hands on" by showing many practical examples. It also gives a great perspective on manufacturing considerations & techniques. This is a great book for an RF designer at any level to keep on the shelf.

The Nikon Creative Lighting System: Using the SB-600, SB-800, SB-900, and R1C1 Flashes Review

The Nikon Creative Lighting System: Using the SB-600, SB-800, SB-900, and R1C1 Flashes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Amidst all the hype about megapixels and flicker, a new technology seemed to slip in under the radar. The Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS) arrived and gave users of the brand an unprecedented way to control large numbers of lights with an ease that would help to make better images (whatever better means). Lots of Nikon flash guns, or speedlights as they are now called, could be spread around a subject and fired again and again, while the photographer looked at resulting images on the camera monitor and adjusted the speedlights without ever leaving the shooting place until the photograper got just the lighting desired. Unfortunately, with this increase in versatility came an increase in complexity. It's this complexity that Mike Hagen is attempting to deal with.
The book includes chapters on the CLS system and flash theory in general; the buttons, modes and operations of each of the speedlights in the system, including the SB600, SB800, SB900, the SU800, the SB200, and the R1C1; the capabilities of the Nikon cameras that are integrated into the CLS system; batteries; and technique, including some examples of the use of the system.
The author aims primarily at the functions of the equipment rather than applications about which there is little discussion. For example, multiple flashes are quite useful in lighting interiors but there is no mention of this in the book. Nikon actually provides a pamphlet with their speedlights that does a better job of showing applications.
Unfortunately, the author often shows a lack of precision in discussing topics. For example, he indicates that the flash will tell you that it was not powerful enough to illuminate a scene by placing a minus sign in the upper right hand corner of the speedlight screen when a scene is underexposed. One might assume that this is some form of pre-metering but actually one must first take a picture, using the flash, to get this indicator. He also doesn't mention that the flash indicator on the flash will blink and that on some Nikon cameras, an indicator will blink in the viewfinder. For another example, Hagen tells you that you can press the zoom button to change the dispersion pattern of the SB800, but doesn't show you an image of the zoom button. That's because there is no separate button for zoom on the SB800; you have to use the multifunction dial for this purpose.
Some important subjects are omitted completely, like the integration of the speedlight with the camera. For example, there is no mention of the difference in shooting in aperture mode, shutter mode or manual mode. Similarly Hagen fails to provide important information that would allow one to figure out how to handle unique situations, like the fact that the flash tube only lights with one brightness and that it varies its illumination effects by the length of time it is on, or that in high speed mode the flash fires more than once, meaning that it will put out less illumination for each burst.
Users are hungry for information about the CLS system, and this book is the best available on CLS. Let's hope a better one comes along.

The Future of Mobile Communications: Awaiting the Third Generation Review

The Future of Mobile Communications: Awaiting the Third Generation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is very difficult keeping track of what is going on in mobile communications, especially if you are interested in the politics and economics rather than the technology as such which is covered in a number of other books listed on Amazon. Curwen is the first author to try and make sense of it all in book form, and he has overall done a very good job, covering the history of mobile from 2G through GPRS etc to 3G, introduing a short case study of every country that has licensed 3G, an analysis of all of the issues raised and a detailed look at Vodafone and Orange as representative operators. There's lots of wrong numbers out there in the media and websites, and great care has obviously been taken to check the data although the author admits the possibility of errors. The book's greatest virtue is that it is up to date, with the final draft of the text only months old. This isn't one for the techies, but for those interested in the wider ramifications of mobile communications it will prove a valuable - and commendably brief - read.

Residential Broadband Networks Review

Residential Broadband Networks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are about two or three must-reads out there if you want to understand broadband access at a high level. This is one of them.
Kim Maxwell's "Residential Broadband" is fantastic but a bit opinionated -- it doesn't even mention ANY wireless local loop solutions, for example. And it doesn't cover passive optical networks. Mr. Black's text is more comprehensive. It's an easy-to-read survey text which is an excellent introduction to the field.
It does use some technical lexicon and is not for the innumerate; go read books in the Microsoft Library if you want a "for Dummies" type book. Mr. Black defines the terms he uses very clearly, but does not pause to provide context for the reader. If you're an engineer or just a geek, you'll love this.

I-Mode: A Primer Review

I like to explore new topics and areas within computers to see what other things are out there. This book is an insight into a whole new arena for me. Judging from the content and the detail of the content, this author has certainly has shown me that he is one the foremost experts on the topic of i-mode.

Over 480 pages make up this manual which covers the model that Japan has found to be the best cash-for content model out there. In part 1 of the book you have the opportunity to look into the history of the i-mode as well as the hardware and software beginnings.

Part 2 is the i-mode environment, who would use the product, what type of audience can and do you target. Making it work so you can enhance the revenue. Finally part 3 is how to develop in i-mode. What application are used for development and the language used to create i-mode pages.

While most of the concepts are still a little beyond my understanding with the cd included , which has Java SDK, Forte for Java, a demo of Adobe Go Live and several other applications, I am beginning to understand what it takes.

Overall the author has spent a great deal of time and effort inputting together a seriously complete reference manual - well done.
