The authors do an excellent job of laying out basic computer concepts in easy format. Would recommend it. The other books on special software was not explaining the basics to me. I guess I expected too much.

I am an MCSE NT4 that has had a 4 1/2 year hiatus from IT work. My first read through an A+ book was in 1998 which was comparatively a bland textbook read. Myers has done a nice job with this book, even entertaining on occasion. I am quickly getting caught up on areas I missed. It is very unfortunate the CompTIA group can't seem to connect with Microsoft on their timing of OS releases. It would be nice to have Windows 7 addressed in this book.

LTE for UMTS - OFDMA and SC-FDMA Based Radio Access Review

LTE for UMTS - OFDMA and SC-FDMA Based Radio Access
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
LTE is the next evolution of wireless communications. I have to state at the outset that as a former COO of NYNEX Mobile and one of the proponents of CDMA in the 1980s, I find that LTE is merely a natural progression of what was started almost a quarter century ago. LTE does not deliver any major technical advances, it implements them. OFDM has been around for almost fifty years in some form as has been the MIMO antenna configuration. LTE is the natural progression to an all IP fabric, a vision that Irwin Jacobs and those at Qualcomm in the 1980s had envisioned.
The authors of this book have achieved a very useful product which has a great demand. They have managed to write about LTE in a highly structured yet simple and direct manner. They cover all of the key issues at a level of detail which is perfect for those seeking to get updated as well as those who are starting out. This book is NOT a technical dissertation of LTE or wireless. If you have the expertise it fills out the edges, if you do not it will enlighten you.
The authors move through the book in a logical manner and at no point did I find them speaking down to the reader or making a presentation over simplistic. In a sense this is an overview but in a sense it is also a well composed detailing of LTE.
Unlike many of the other books I have seen on similar topics, this does not have the feel of some overused power point presentations with words interspersed. The flow of ideas is superb.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone seeking to get a feel for the details of LTE.

From the editors of the highly successful WCDMA for UMTS, this new book gives a complete and up-to-date overview of Long Term Evolution (LTE) in a systematic and clear manner. It starts with an in-depth explanation of the background and standardization process before moving on to examine the system architecture evolution (SAE). The basics of air interface modulation choices are introduced and key subjects such as 3GPP LTE physical layer and protocol solutions are described. Mobility aspects and radio resource management together with radio and end-to-end performance are assessed. The voice solution and voice capacity in LTE are also illustrated. Finally, the main differences between LTE TDD and FDD modes are examined and HSPA evolution in 3GPP Releases 7 and 8 is described.
LTE for UMTS is one of the first books to provide a comprehensive guide to the standards and technologies of LTE. Key features of the book include:
Covers all the key aspects of LTE in a systematic manner
Presents full description of 3GPP Release 8 LTE
Examines the expected performance of LTE
Written by experts actively involved in the 3GPP standards and product development.

Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution Review

Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution
Average Reviews:

At the very end of the book, the author quotes James Madison as carved into the marble of the Library of Congress: "...a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives." And there it is--Howard Rheingold has documented the next level of the Internet, in which kids typing 60 words a minute with one thumb, "swarms" of people converging on a geospatial node guided only by their cell phones; virtual "CIAs" coming together overnight to put together massive (and accurate) analysis with which to take down a corporate or government position that is fradulent--this is the future and it is bright.
As I go back through the book picking out highlights, a few of the following serve to capture the deep rich story being told by this book--breakthroughs coming from associations of amateurs rather than industry leaders; computer-mediated trust brokers--collective action driven by reputation; detailed minute-by-minute information about behaviors of entire populations (or any segment thereof); texting as kid privacy from adult hearing; the end of the telephone number as relevant information; the marriage of geospatial and lifestyle/preference information to guide on the street behavior; the perennial problem of "free riders" and how groups can constrain them; distributed processing versus centralized corporate lawyering; locations with virtual information; shirt labels with their transportation as well as cleaning history (and videos of the sex partners?)--this is just mind-boggling.
Finally, the author deserves major credit for putting all this techno-marvel stuff into a deep sociological and cultural context. He carefully considers the major issues of privacy, control, social responsibility, and group behavior. He ends on very positive notes, but also notes that time is running out--we have to understand where all this is going, and begin to change how we invest and how we design everything from our clothing to our cities to our governments.
This is an affirming book--the people that pay taxes can still look forward to the day when they might take back control of their government and redirect benefits away from special interests and back toward the commonwealth. Smart mobs, indeed.

MCTS Windows 7 Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-680
Average Reviews:

Having read the other reviews I was quite surprised to find that that this book does not delve deeply enough into the details, especially in the non-GUI commands, to be adequate preparation for the current exam. It mentions some key concepts only briefly while leaving others out entirely, it tends to introduce concepts generally rather than specifically, and it fails to explain how these concepts are intended to be used in a live environment, and provides little or no insight into troubleshooting procedures. In the past this would have been sufficient for the exam but current certification exams rely very heavily on the application of understanding rather than on rote memorization of facts. Something else that was particularly troublesome was how this book tends to uses the self-tests and chapter reviews to introduce new material which is not elaborated on in the text, and in some instances the 'correct' answer on these quizzes is wrong (for example, there is no Windows 7 Business edition, yet that is the correct answer in one of the self tests).
I found other books (the Microsoft self-paced guide for example) to be much more thorough in this regard, covering everything that I encountered in the live exam in sufficient detail to pass without difficulty, as well as (and more importantly) imparting a solid understanding of how to effectively use the various functions, tools, and utilities included in Windows 7 in a live production environment. When this book provides detail it is generally well presented, but because it leaves out too many important aspects of Windows 7, many of which I encountered on the exam, I could not recommend it to anyone as the sole source of information to prepare for the exam.

One of the book's biggest problems is that it rambles. The book has 14 multi-topic-chapters. This could be solved with going to 20 or 24 focused chapters. Part of the problem is the book's target audience - accounting, business or management majors that should know what IT can do for them. I have over 25 years in business and over 10 years in IT, dealing with Fortune 100 companies to mom and pop shops. When I read this book, I get they impression they talked to one person or one company and they take that as industry standards. Oops these generalizations miss the mark. If they talk to only one company they should say so- this is the way XYZ does this. If you have a 42 page chapter called "Database Systems and Business Intelligence" the business intelligence (BI) section should be longer than a 1/2 page. I have thought this book wouldn't be a good value at half the price.

My roommate used this book in her class and asked if I wanted it when I take the class. I looked it over and I am sure it's fine for some, but if you managed to turn your computer on, find the Internet, find amazon, and search for these reviews, then you no longer need this book. I wasn't impressed that the author rated his own book, but at least he gave it 5 stars. I would hate to think of an author giving less than that to his own book.

The Complete User's Guide to the Amazing Amazon Kindle (First Generation) Review

The Complete User's Guide to the Amazing Amazon Kindle (First Generation)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Informative and expanding, much information that an avid reader-turned-Kindle-reader might otherwise miss. Available elsewhere? Definitely, and those with an urge to tinker will find it. But if your focus is on the books and you are the sort who looks for answers in the user manual, then articles such as this are invaluable.
This is the first review I have ever submitted to Amazon. Must admit that the electronic shouting matches that many of these review lists become puts me off. But the potential for a real paradigm shift in how we use, and value, "cyber access" exists here and the window won't likely stay open long. The more folks learn about the possibilities, the greater the push. Stephen Windwalker appears to be writing for the "typical Kindle buyer" who wants an electronic reader for the convenience of having a lot of books in a small, transportable package. Thoughts of expanded uses are not even entertained in many cases. Without articles like this to inform the conventional user of these possibilities, many will be happy, contented readers and never know other capabilities exist.
Kindle is a terrific way to read books. I started a skeptic, bought my wife one as a gift, and we now have a pair. (She offered to share but I knew she didn't really want to.) We are both voracious readers, several books a week when we aren't being consumed by one work crisis or another. While we both have the tech savvy to figure out anything that is discussed in this article, for a couple dollars we didn't have to. It came instantly to my Kindle at the push of a button. And that is the bottom line for me.
Any information worth having is worth a couple dollars if you can get what you need in a concise, ordered format and if it saves you the time you would have spent in finding it yourself. The more people that have this information, the more clamor there will be to enhance and expand these capabilities, and the sooner the better. And that will make a $2.39 investment seem like a prophetic decision.

CompTIA A+ Certification All-In-One For Dummies Review

CompTIA A+ Certification All-In-One For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Waste of money, waste of time. I'm sorry to say it because I normally love (and trust) the "Dummies" series of books. But I'm a pretty computer proficient person already, and I knew a TON of the material was just useless and obsolete. To confirm my suspicions, I downloaded the official A+ 2009 exam objectives, and sure enough, about half of what this Dummies book covers isn't even covered at all. Who uses ISA slots or Pentium 2s these days, come on?!
They tried to update the book by throwing in new hardware types and such, but it was such an obvious copy and paste job. You might be reading a paragraph, talking about how new and prevalent X hardware is, only to read a recent paragraph addition about how new and prevalent hardware Y is. Guess what, only one of them is (e.g., X went out of style years ago, everyone uses Y now). This is very common.
Updating a book--especially something so technical--should involve more than pasting in some new material. It should be deleting the useless stuff, and giving the reader a true sense of what's the dominant hardware type and what's going out of style. Reading this, you might have no idea if you didn't have prior knowledge. Plus, there are blatant inaccuracies (e.g., AMD's new AM3 processors have 938 pins, not 941 as written in the book).
Sorry, but I can't recommend this book. Comprehensive, yes. Accurate, up-to-date, and relevant? Not by a mile.

MCTS 70-680 Cert Guide: Microsoft Windows 7, Configuring Review

MCTS 70-680 Cert Guide: Microsoft Windows 7, Configuring
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently took and passed the 70-680 this morning by using this book. I feel it is only fair to say that it was not my only source but one of my main sources of study.
I personally thought the exam in the book was harder than the actual test. Not the chapter exams, the exam on the CD. With that being said, I would say if you can pass the test on the CD, you can pass the actual exam. I really enjoyed the pre-test format of the book. Each chapter began with a pre-test that would help you determine if you should read the entire chapter, a section of the chapter or just skip to the review topics point in the chapter. Every chapter also included a memory table with keywords that you were asked to fill out from memory. I did that for every chapter and it really helped when I saw questions I didn't recognize but could eliminate due to knowing exactly what a option was or what it did.
I think the most obvious question people will have about the book:
Deployment section - Although I did not use all of the commands in this book to lab for the deployment(I used CBT Nuggets and Train Signal) the beginning ones I used were fine. As I am sure some of you know, the MS press book is riddled with errors, so much there is an errata thread about it. I only state this because as soon as you start using the commands from the MS press book you are met with commands that don't work. And that adds to an extremely frustrating lab experience.
In conclusion, I believe this book should definitely be added to any study regiment when preparing for the 680 exam. With all the information in this book, you can probably pass with this alone but I would not recommend that. These types of exams are heavy on understanding and being able to do things. The only way to ensure both is by experience(in other words labs)
I hope this review is helpful to all those that come across it. I don't write reviews much but seeing as how this book has none and it IS a good source. I figured why not.
For all my TE Comrades - TSR
