Excellent book.
Despite of ignoring Winner models that book is a very helpful.
Costa introduces in the 2nd chapter all the basis you need to make students understand correlative and cluster models discussed in 3rd and 4th chapters.
Helpful appendices on tensor theory and useful examples in 6th chapter.
The book is pretty short, but MIMO channel modeling is also a recent subject.

I havn't read the whole book yet, but I use some parts of the material in function of my interests. This is an excellent practical book about a topic that is rarely developed in any book (if any) and that you have to learn the hard way. You receive directly real-life examples and real designs that you can apply in your RF engineer work. I recommend strongly this book. I know the book seems expensive, but you can acquire good knowledge in RF indoor design, which should ease your work. My only question is: when a book about tunnel RF design (with time dispersion explanation, ... another topic never developed in any books).

Mobile wireless applications are a good way to increase productivity, improve customer service and streamline business processes. 3G mobile applications, however, bring a unique challenge: ensuring adequate in-building coverage.??
Indoor Radio Planning provides an overview of mobile networks systems and coverage solutions for cellular networks in buildings. The background of GSM, UMTS and HSPA cellular systems technology are presented and form the backdrop of the main discussion as to why indoor coverage is needed and how it is best implemented. Basic passive distributed antenna systems (DAS) through to advanced fiber optic systems are discussed in detail, giving the reader a good understanding of all the available solutions. In addition, there is a section covering multi-operator systems, as this is becoming a more and more utilized approach. Other sections cover aspects such as how to upgrade passive DAS from 2G to 3G, noise analysis, link budgets, traffic calculations and software tools that can be used to provide help with creating in-building designs. These topics are examined at length from the basic considerations to advanced indoor radio planning.
One of the first texts dedicated solely to indoor radio planning, it will be of essential reading to engineering and planning personnel working for mobile operators, with the book being written with radio planners in mind throughout. Indoor Radio Planning will also be of interest to companies who service and manufacture equipment for operators such as suppliers of indoor coverage systems and vendors of base stations for mobile coverage.

This is definitely not the right book if you do not know anything about wireless communications and you just want to have an idea of this topic. In order to understand most of the chapters you need quite a strong background on analog (AMPS) and TDMA systems(GSM). If this is the case, this book is helpful to understand all the main features of the IS-95 CDMA standard and the differences between this systems and the previously mentioned ones. The book is complete, well organized and structured even though sometimes it exceeds in details and becomes heavy to read. iPhone App Development: The Missing Manual Review

iPhone App Development: The Missing Manual
Average Reviews:

I've been looking to get into iPhone OS development this spring, and most books I've come across have fallen into one of two categories:
1) they expect you to have a background in Mac OS X's Objective-C development frameworks or...
2) they're written like a reference book and thus make it difficult to learn the ropes in a step-by-step fashion.
Craig Hockenberry's iPhone App Development: The Missing Manual changes that frustrating pattern. By introducing the world of developing an iPhone app in a way that requires just a bit of programming experience, Hockenberry makes instantly accessible the Objective-C language, the XCode IDE, and the design processes that go into taking your app from notepad sketch to App Store success and beyond. The text is clear and approachable, and Craig's jolly writing style makes grasping important concepts and following along with examples both fun and memorable.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with any C-like programming experience who is interested in writing apps for the iPhone OS.

Mac OS X Unwired: A Guide for Home, Office, and the Road Review

Mac OS X Unwired: A Guide for Home, Office, and the Road
Average Reviews:

If only this book had been available when I started delving in wireless networking! While my network is simple - and getting the AirPort network up and running for my Macs was a breeze - it does involve a DSL modem, a switch, an AirPort base station acting as a bridge to a wired Ethernet network, and several computers, including PCs. I remember spending a fair amount of time when first setting it up to get everything working correctly, especially the link between the wired and wireless network. Negrino and Smith walk the reader through all the steps required to set up and configure an 802.11 network, and cover the sticky issues concerning IP addresses, DHCP addressing and many other acronyms that novice users may be unfamiliar with.
One of the strengths of this book is the authors' tone of voice. Negrino and Smith assume that the reader does not know a lot about the many protocols and acronyms used, and they explain these elements in a cool and patient manner. There is no talking down to the reader, nor is there any obfuscation. The explanations are clear and simple, and readers will be able to set up a wireless network - no matter how complex - with ease.
But the book goes beyond mere WiFi networking, with a thorough presentation of Bluetooth, cellular connectivity, Rendezvous and more. No matter which wireless technologies you want to use with Mac OS X, this book explains them in simple, non-geeky language.
As more people - even home users - have multiple computers, connecting them is the best way to leverage all their functions. Wireless networking is, as the authors say, "simple the most cost-effective and least obtrusive way to connect all of your computers." If you've been tempted by wireless networking, and have been hesitant, thinking that it's complex and complicated, invest in this book - it's the perfect toolkit for setting up all kinds of wireless networking with Mac OS X.

Embedded Systems Handbook (Industrial Information Technology) Review

Embedded Systems Handbook (Industrial Information Technology)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Embedded Systems Handbook edited by Richard Zurawski (Industrial Information Technology: CRC Press) Embedded systems are nearly ubiquitous, and books on individual topics or components of embedded systems are equally abundant. Unfortunately, for those designers who thirst for knowledge of the big picture of embedded systems, there is not a drop to drink. Until now. The Embedded Systems Handbook is an oasis of information, offering a mix of basic and advanced topics, new solutions and technologies arising from the most recent research efforts, and emerging trends to help you stay current in this ever-changing field.
With preeminent contributors from leading industrial and academic institutions around the globe, this authoritative handbook presents timely tutorials, surveys, and technological overviews spanning the range of issues and technologies involved in embedded systems. Many of the technology developments, deployments, and trends are made available in this book for the first time. Six sections provide coherence to the presentation, detailing:
A broad introduction to embedded systems
System- and network-on-chip (SoC/NoC) design
Testing of embedded core-based integrated circuits
Networked embedded systems
Sensor networks, and
Automotive, industrial automation, and intelligent sensor applications
With concise yet comprehensive coverage of the latest developments, solutions, tools, products, and research results, the Embedded Systems Handbook is ideal for both novices and seasoned engineers looking to enhance and expand embedded systems capabilities.
Detailing the latest advances and technologies, this monumental work:
Discusses real-time issues, methods, and trends along with design, modeling, software, and power-aware embedded computing
Provides broad coverage of IC technologies, embedded security, and networked embedded systems
Explores safety-critical embedded systems, synchronous languages and software, and fault-tolerance
Delves extensively into sensor networks
Anchors the discussion with several practical, real-world embedded system applications
The purpose of the Embedded Systems Handbook is to provide a reference useful to a broad range of professionals and researchers from industry and academia involved in the evolution of concepts and technologies, as well as development and use of embedded systems and related technologies.
The book provides a comprehensive overview of the field of embedded systems and applications. The emphasis is on advanced material to cover recent significant research results and technology evolution and developments. It is primarily aimed at experienced professionals from industry and academia, but will also be useful to novices with some university background in embedded systems and related areas. Some of the topics presented in the book have received limited coverage in other publications either owing to the fast evolution of the technologies involved, or material confidentiality, or limited circulation in the case of industry-driven developments.
The book covers extensively the design and validation of real-time embedded systems, design and verification languages, operating systems and scheduling, timing and performance analysis, power aware computing, security in embedded systems, the design of application-specific instruction-set processors (ASIPs), system-on-chip (SoC) and network-on-chip (NoC), testing of core-based ICs, network embedded systems and sensor networks, and embedded applications to include in-car embedded electronic systems, intelligent sensors, and embedded web servers for industrial automation.
The book contains 46 contributions, written by leading experts from industry and academia directly involved in the creation and evolution of the ideas and technologies treated in the book.
The material presented is in the form of tutorials, surveys, and technology overviews. The contributions are grouped into sections for cohesive and comprehensive presentation of the treated areas. The reports on recent technology developments, deployments, and trends frequently cover material released to the profession for the first time.
The book can be used as a reference (or prescribed text) for university (post)graduate courses: Section I (Embedded Systems) provides "core" material on embedded systems. Selected illustrations of actual applications are presented in Section VI (Embedded Applications). Sections 11 and III (System-on-Chip Design, and Testing of Embedded Core-Based Integrated Circuits) offer material on recent advances in system-on-chip design and testing of core-based ICs. Sections IV and V (Networked Embedded Systems, and Sensor Networks) are suitable for a course on sensor networks.
The handbook is designed to cover a wide range of topics that comprise the field of embedded systems and applications. The material covered in this volume will be of interest to a wide spectrum of professionals and researchers from industry and academia, as well as graduate students, from the fields of electrical and computer engineering, computer science and software engineering, as well as mechatronic engineering.
It is an indispensable companion for those who seek to learn more about embedded systems and applications, and those who want to stay up to date with recent technical developments in the field. It is also a comprehensive reference for university or professional development courses on embedded systems.
Embedded systems is a vast field encompassing numerous disciplines. Not every topic, however important, can be covered in a book of reasonable volume without superficial treatment. Choices need to be made with respect to the topics covered, balance between research material and reports on novel industrial developments and technologies, balance between so-called "core" topics and new trends, and other aspects. The "time-to-market" is another important factor in making those decisions, along with the availability of qualified authors to cover the topics.
One of the main objectives of any handbook is to give a well-structured and cohesive description of fundamentals of the area under treatment. It is hoped that the section Embedded Systems has achieved this objective. Every effort was made to make sure that each contribution in this section contains introductory material to assist beginners with the navigation through more advanced issues. This section does not strive to replicate or replace university level material, but, rather, tries to address more advanced issues, and recent research and technology developments.
To make this book timely and relevant to a broad range of professionals and researchers, the book includes material reflecting state-of-the-art trends to cover topics such as design of ASIPs, SoC communication architectures including NoC, design of heterogeneous SoC, as well as testing of core-based integrated circuits. This material reports on new approaches, methods, technologies, and actual systems. The contributions come from the industry driving those developments, industry-affiliated research institutions, and academic establishments participating in major research initiatives.
Application domains have had a considerable impact on the evolution of embedded systems, in terms of required methodologies and supporting tools, and resulting technologies. A good example is the accelerated evolution of the SoC design to meet demands for computing power posed by DSP, network and multimedia processors. SoCs are slowly making inroads into the area of industrial automation to implement complex field-area intelligent devices which integrate the intelligent sensor/actuator functionality by providing on-chip signal conversion, data and signal processing, and communication functions. There is a growing tendency to network field-area intelligent devices around industrial communication networks. Similar trends appear in the automotive electronic systems where the Electronic Control Units (ECUs) are networked by means of safety-critical communication protocols such as ElexRay, for instance, for the purpose of controlling vehicle functions such as electronic engine control, anti-locking break system, active suspension, etc. The design of this kind of networked embedded system (this also includes hard real-time industrial control systems) is a challenge in itself due to the distributed nature of processing elements, sharing a common communication medium and safety-critical requirements. With the auto-motive industry increasingly keen on adopting mechatronic solutions, it was felt that exploring, in detail, the design of in-vehicle electronic embedded systems would be of interest to the readers of this book. The applications part of the book also touches the area of industrial automation (networked control systems) where the issues are similar. In this case, the focus is on the design of wet) servers embedded in the intelligent field-area devices, and the security issues arising from internetworking.
Sensor networks are another example of networked embedded systems, although, the "embedding" factor is not so evident as in other applications; particularly for wireless and self-organizing networks where the nodes may be embedded in the ecosystem, battlefield, or a chemical plant, for instance. The area of
wireless sensor networks has now evolved into a relative maturity. Owing to novelty, and growing importance, it has been included in the book to give a comprehensive overview of the area, and present new research results which are likely to have a tangible impact on further developments and technology.
The specifics of the design automation of integrated circuits have been deliberately omitted in this book to keep the volume at a reasonable size and in view of the publication of another...Read more›

This book about GSM is a very clearly written and yet concisely written. Its true that this book of such a small size cannot substitute for reading the standards. However for the purposes of getting a system point of view ,understanding the Access side protocol stack this book is very good.
Especially the chapter on Physical Layer is so concise and yet covers almost everything you might want to know about Physical Layer.
Highly recommended.

I am very dissapointed with this book. This book does not really include any specifics on IP as mentioned on the cover. There is in reality only one chapter which covers IP, the rest of the book is more related to Physical Layer. Also there is a lack of continuity and clarity.
This book is good as far as physical layer is concerned but then their other book "Wideband CDMA for Third Generation Mobile Communications " also covers those topics.
Finally i would like to say that anyone who wants to purchase this book should first go through it before buying it.

Voice Over WLANS: The Complete Guide (Communications Engineering) Review

Voice Over WLANS: The Complete Guide (Communications Engineering)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The subject of Voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) is a tough one to get your mind around as it involves the convergence of two evolving technologies, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). VoIP is rapidly replacing circuit-switched voice in the public switched telephone network (PSTN), where most of the kinks have been worked out. VoIP also is making inroads into the premises. While there remain considerable kinks in this domain, LAN-based IPBXs now are gaining serious ground against conventional PBXs, hybrids and key systems, many of which are past retirement age. WLANs have become almost ubiquitous and 802.11n promises much increased bandwidth and range due in considerable measure to MIMO antenna technology. Putting it all together involves converting the most demanding stream-oriented application of all (i.e., analog voice) to a digital data format, compressing it, packetizing the resulting data stream using a connectionless network protocol (IP), switching it through an Ethernet LAN that was never intended for such nonsense and adding the uncertainty of wireless (radio) transmission links just to make it a little more challenging. This is not an endeavor for the uneducated or faint of heart, which is where Michael Finneran and this book come in.
Voice over WLANs: The Complete Guide is an apt title, for the book is a thorough treatment of the subject that will guide just about anyone through the background, underlying technologies, planning processes and managerial issues associated with VoWLANs. Finneran begins with an insightful overview on the convergence of WLANs and VoIP. He then patiently and thoroughly builds the necessary technical foundation in radio transmission, WLAN components, media access control protocols, and privacy and security issues. His explanation of the IP protocol suite and its application in voice routing and QoS management is at just the right level. Drilling deeper into the subject, he guides the reader through network design, traffic engineering, VoWLAN configuration, fixed-mobile convergence (FMC), and network management, all of which is pretty technical fare, but Finneran presents it in such a way that it goes down easily.
Finneran has a well deserved reputation as a master communicator, both in person and in print. He avoids the temptation to impress us with his considerable intellect, preferring to exercise his unique ability to translate highly technical subject matter into plain-English, absolutely understandable and even friendly terms. Those of us who know Mike Finneran or are familiar with his work have come to expect nothing but the best from him. This book does not disappoint. Voice over WLANs: The Compete Guide is absolutely essential for anyone with a need to know about VoWLANs at a practical level.

Power Management in Mobile Devices (Communications Engineering) Review

Power Management in Mobile Devices (Communications Engineering)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a quite useful book for anyone who needs to deal with power consumption in portable devices, sensor networks, or other low-power applications. The book covers a broad array of topics: transistor process technology, ASIC design methodology for low-power circuits, software optimization, batteries, regulators, and displays. For the reader who is generally familiar with embedded systems, this book is a very nice quick way to catch up on what's being done in all the aspects of power-sensitive system design. While the material is not terribly deep or mathematical, some background in electrical and/or software engineering is needed to benefit from many of the discussions. A nice list of references is provided at the end of each chapter.
Cavils are mostly minor. The book is stylistically disfigured by a number of incomplete and ungrammatical sentences. Some passages read as if they were lifted directly from vendor sales collateral; it would have been nice to have the author's critical evaluation of products rather than or in addition to the vendor's marketing materials. In some of the circuit diagrams, boxes are used for resistors and/or inductors, instead of the standard symbols -- minor but irritating. The introductory chapters are somewhat awkward and repetitive, but most readers will already be familiar with the problems of power use in portable devices (that's why they are reading the book), so they don't really need this material anyway.

Sealed Lead Acid.Nickel Cadmium.Lithium Ion.How do you balance battery life with performance and cost? This book shows you how!Now that "mobile" has become the standard, the consumer not only expects mobility but demands power longevity in wireless devices. As more and more features, computing power, and memory are packed into mobile devices such as iPods, cell phones, and cameras, there is a large and growing gap between what devices can do and the amount of energy engineers can deliver. In fact, the main limiting factor in many portable designs is not hardware or software, but instead how much power can be delivered to the device. Wi-Fi (802.11) Network Handbook

Covers several areas which are not found in a lot of other books. However, at many places, it assumes that the reader has some basic knowledge. Completely lacks illustrations, examples, figures. The writing style is very boring - paragraph after paragraph without any structure to these. The information presented is definitely good and useful - but you gotta keep yourself awake !
All in all, I would NOT receommend this to anybody as a first book. I began with Jim Geir's book, and found that very good begin with. Actually a lot of the examples, figures in that book helped me understand many of the concepts mentioned in this book (sometimes in even greater detail). If the authors could improve upon the boring writing style and add some pictures to explain the concepts better - this book would be much better.

The Radio Amateur's Satellite Handbook (Radio Amateur's Library;, Publication No. 232)

This book is essential for anyone wanting to work with the Amateur Satellites. It covers the history of various projects, explains the modes of operation, and shows the equipment needed to talk with the birds. Like all the ARRL books, it is easy to follow and clearly written. The only problem I have with the book is that it hasn't been updated since 1997. It doesn't have good information on some of the newer spacecraft. As an example, it talks about the soon to be launched Phase 3D satellite rather than talking about the now orbiting AO-40 (ex Phase 3D) and some of the problems it is having. Still, the technology and techniques are very valid and good for anyone wishing to work with space communications.
In case your are thinking this is difficult to start in, I've had success transmitting to and receiving from the International Space Station using just a handheld transceiver (Kenwood TH-D7A) and either an attic mounted or handheld directional antenna. I've also heard voice from (but not transmitted to) the OSCAR 14 satellite with this same setup. You don't need an equipment setup to rival NASA in order to start with the aspect of the Amateur Radio hobby.

Designing Audio Power Amplifiers Review

Designing Audio Power Amplifiers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I heard that Bob Cordell had written a book on audio power amp design, I advance-ordered it immediately. Everything I'd seen of his work over the years had been eminently coherent and elegantly conveyed. The book arrived today and is well worth the wait.
I'm going to have to be careful about how much time I spend with this, as it could easily keep me up into the wee hours and lead to an impractical day following. But everything I've sampled is accurate, concise, and a pleasure to read. Much like Floyd Toole's recent magisterial tome, Sound Reproduction, Cordell calmly but decisively demolishes flawed audio mythology at every turn. Part 5, toward the end, is itself well-worth the price of admission. The discussion on negative feedback in particular is recommended.
But the book is not all about skewering shibboleths, and dipping into to earlier chapters reveals a keen and compassionate ability to convey crucial insights into real design. The balance between the maths, simulation results, and real-world experience is well-wrought. Again, I've not read but a fraction, but the flavor comes through readily from all of the excerpts I've perused.
As well, the book appears to be astonishingly typo-free. There must be a few, but I haven't found any yet.
Having heard directly from Toole how arduous the production of his book was, the fights with incompetent editors and so forth, and the negligible compensation he's receiving, I am mightily impressed with this book, and thank Bob Cordell for expending the enormous effort it has doubtless required. And I sense a fundamental decency about the man, somehow.
Very highly recommended.

AAA and Network Security for Mobile Access: Radius, Diameter, EAP, PKI and IP Mobility Review

AAA and Network Security for Mobile Access: Radius, Diameter, EAP, PKI and IP Mobility
Average Reviews:

If you're looking for an in depth book on AAA and it's associated algorithms, there's no match for this book. Much as I wish I was wrong and that I could replace the book I borrowed from my friend with a cheaper book, I'm afraid I'm about to be forced to shell out the [...] on AAA. And I'm only going to need it as an intermittent reference. There's no math (at least no Greek), but many of the algorithms used to underpin the subject are explained concisely and clearly. It's simply well written and more informative than anything else on the market. I'm a sales engineer and this book was written on the ideal level for me. Technical enough but also abstract enough. Good work sir!

Secrets of Podcasting, Second Edition: Audio Blogging for the Masses (2nd Edition) Review

Secrets of Podcasting, Second Edition: Audio Blogging for the Masses (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

This is a solid and well-written book for beginner and intermediate types.
I pre-orderd this book because I like Peachpit's books and I had heard so much about podcasting that I thought I'd better 'get in the game'.
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. The author goes into detail about what podcasts are, where they came from, and then each of three chapters explain how to get and listen to podcasts as well as create and publish them.
An easy read that's well put together. Hopefully this review is helpful to others.
Adam

Web Geek's Guide to the Android-Enabled Phone covers Android 1.5. Since the average person has no clue what an Android-Enabled phone is, the book starts off explaining in plain English the connection between this technology and Google. Essentially, the thought is that phones are fast becoming mini-computers. Soon, your phone will be your office without an office. This need will require better methods of connecting to the Internet and flexible ways for users to get/use/create the applications that they need to do their jobs.
In this way, T-Mobile is heavy on Internet based access. It also allows the user to create or adapt applications to suit individual needs. While this aspect might be a bit beyond most users, it is a step in the right direction.
