The author truly has mastered my equations and displays practical application of them to real world situations. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down! Field calculations and microstrip design can sometimes be a little dry, but the author makes it not only interesting, but fun as well. I would like to see him branch out into solving world peace and time travel next, as he seems well equipped to tackle those subjects after this etraordinary work. I wish I could give 6 stars.

Wireless Access and the Local Telephone Network (Telecommunications Library) (Artech House Telecommunications Library) Review

Wireless Access and the Local Telephone Network (Telecommunications Library) (Artech House Telecommunications Library)
Average Reviews:

This is an outstanding book that presents an analysis of wireless access vs wireline access. It is extremely complete as it is obvious that George Calhoun is a true expert on the subject. The book is filled with useful formulas to derive an analysis wireline vs wireless, introduces simple economic models, network topology models and history of the evolution of the local loop. Moreover, it has many useful references. Overall, I strongly recommend this book as it is an excellent reference for economics engineering of the local loop (whether wireline or wireless). The only problem that I foresee is that the last edition is from 1992, so this is a 10 years old book and some of the issues that could have been true then are outdated now and others proven to be wrong.

The Wireless Age Review

The Wireless Age
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Judy Breck's The Wireless Age is an enlightening and passionate prediction of the future role the Internet will play in education worldwide. Wires and plugs will disappear and all students may be empowered with their own handheld computer devices that will be as inexpensive as telephones. In the authors words:
"I predict that wireless handheld computers that include Internet access will make teaching in now difficult schools less frustrating and more fun. The kids will respond to having their own tools, just as ghetto kids did a century and a half ago to learning their letters by writing them on a tablet. The optimism of kids is the elixir that will restore the good health of teaching in America."
Making all that is known available to all children, through a far-reaching technological transition, raises crucial questions about the nature of teaching and learning. Will teachers understand how to apply this new, powerful global tool? To what end will it be applied? How will teachers engage students to use this wealth of knowledge? Will it change the meaning of learning? Will students know what it means to use knowledge to discover and create? What does all this mean to the standards movement engulfing American education? The author concludes:
"The Great Change will be complete when a student can hold in his or her hand everything that is known."
And our understanding of its meaning for learning and schools will just begin.

Wireless Web: A Manager's Guide Review

Wireless Web: A Manager's Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
About two years ago I had the pleasure of hearing Frank Coyle speak at an industry conference. Frank's talk at the conference was primarily on XML (Extensible Markup Language). During the talk I was very impressed with the breadth and depth of Frank's knowledge. He traced the development of XML from its origins in GML (Generalized Markup Language) from the 1970s to SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) to HTML and XHTML, touching on a variety of important issues along the way.
In parallel with the development of XML Frank outlined the development of programming languages, describing them as code- or data-centric and traced their influences and progress from procedural-oriented to their eventual support for objects and components. Frank then showed the relationship of markup languages to the world of components and how they all fit together.
Frank's talk wasn't a history lesson, but an in-depth examination of XML technology along with the how, what, where, and why it is important. It was a tour-de-force presentation that finally allowed me to see and appreciate the context and proper application of XML.
I am happy to report that most of Frank's XML presentation is included in his book, "Wireless Web - A Manager's Guide." Frank's ability to distill and explain is extended, in the book, to all things wireless and the convergence of wireless with the Web. Frank covers the majority of wireless technologies from the perspective of three evolving forms: the cell phone, the personal digital assistant (PDA), and the portable computer, within a larger context of the wireless advantages, including localization, personalization, and immediacy.
Separate chapters are devoted to wireless devices, Bluetooth, WLAN (wireless LAN), 1G, 2G, and 3G networks, WAP (wireless application protocol), XML, Java, and security issues.
Managers, programmers, and consultants who are looking to understand and implement wireless applications will find this book essential. It is the only book I have found that provides the in-depth coverage combined with the necessary touchstones to guide your journey. It is a smart book written by a sharp author who understands technology is best considered in context and converging influences. After reading this book you will not only understand the current wireless landscape, but also be in a position to make intelligent judgments on its future directions.

This book summarizes in a neat way the major differences between CDMA and WCDMA technlogies and gives a overview of the same in each of it's chapters. A very good book to start on CDMA or WCDMA, bereft of major mathamatical jargon, very useful to hands-on engineers who are looking for that one book which can summarize difference between CDMA and WCDMA. Since the book was written in 1996, when the WCDMA is still in it's infancy, an upgrade is essential in my opinion.

As a former wireless professional and long time investor in wireless companies, I am frequently asked by fellow investors to recommend a good basic book on wireless. "Tapping into Wireless" fills the bill! The book is highly literate and well organized and covers wireless history, the wireless regulatory environment, the role of wireless service providers, the various warless technologies, and the evolution of wireless standards, and it does so without getting bogged down in technical detail. Better yet, it covers both wireless basics and investing in wireless companies. Not only does the book not favor a particular wireless technology, it cautions against getting emotionally involved with a particular technology. For those that are not intimately familiar with the industry, this is a great place to start.

The Wireless Web: How to Develop and Execute a Winning Wireless Strategy Review

The Wireless Web: How to Develop and Execute a Winning Wireless Strategy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In just a few years the Internet has revolutionized the way we do business. Email, online shopping and digital music downloaded from the Internet are now integral parts of our everyday lives. Technology aware companies have now turned to wireless web for the next big leap in commerce and communication. The race is on for deploying cutting-edge wireless technology.
As a business and technology consultant I am often asked by clients to provide some guidelines on how to proceed in this new and fast moving industry. Is trading stocks using a wireless PDA really a secure transaction and are electronic coupons delivered to customers via cell phones a technical feasible marketing solution? What communications provider should I use when connecting my sales force via WAP based browsers to a wireless CRM solution? And should we look to Europe and Japan for the future in wireless communication, or will it turn out to be another bursting bubble as we have experienced with too many dot.com business ventures?
"The Wireless Web", unlike so many other books covering technology topics, provides an easy to read and well-structured roadmap on how to develop a winning wireless strategy. Bergeron starts off explaining the history of this industry and it's economic drivers and then provides an overview of the current state of technologies, the various systems, protocols and technical standards used in the US and compares them to the more cohesive and further developed Japanese and European technologies. The latter part of the book focuses on the future, introducing the reader to opportunities and potential risks wireless technologies will offer as well as technical and political limitations it will face as this technology matures He closes with a well structured guideline on how to develop a wireless strategy of any scale.
In summary, this book will familiarize the reader with this new and dynamic industry and provide the knowledge required to develop, communicate, and execute a successful wireless strategy. Although written for the non-technical executive, I recommend this book to every one confronted with wireless technologies, the corporate executive implementing a wireless enterprise information portal as well as the cell phone user confronted with evaluating roaming charges, communication protocols and coverage areas when selecting a calling plan. This book definitely deserves a place on the bookshelf of any technologist.

If the 1990s were the decade when everyone got a cell phone, then the 2000s will see folks using wireless applications for everything from surfing the Net to checking the refrigerator. Wireless used to be about just cell phones, but now everything is looking at going wireless. Announcements of mobile devices, wireless connectivity options, and things that are smarter than they have any right to be are the core of this year's rage. Follow the spectrum of wireless coverage - e-mail on the Palm, cell phone browsers, and nets that connect every gadget in your home. Tech companies are promising that we'll never have to be alone, ever again. We'll be forever connected to the ultimate power, that supreme cybergrid in the sky, by way of our Palm/Pocket/Handspring PDA. Besides phones, developers will spend plenty of time discussing wireless services for providing what has become the holy grail of the Net business: high-speed Internet access. Some of the hot topics: developing text-based Web browsers, delivering real-time stock quotes, and improving access to news, weather forecasts and electronic commerce. The big difference?Wireless executives want to deliver all those services to screens smaller than the average business card. They're also operating in a market where users - most of whom already have access to Web-enabled PCs - pay by the minute. The wireless movement caught mainstream America's attention with the largest initial public offering in US history, when AT&T Wireless Group raised a record US$10.6 billion through an offering of 360 million shares. The explosion of wireless technology and broadband connections should be a boon to businesses that broadcast live and archived events to PCs, TVs, set-top boxes, handheld computers and other wireless devices. Exclusive and compelling content is what draws people to a site. Businesses are already beginning to gauge the market for applications for next-generation mobile phones, high-speed wireless Internet services, and devices for networking household appliances. Bluetooth, a developing wireless standard for linking Internet-connected mobile computers, mobile phones and handheld devices, will be a prominent theme. About 1,300 companies are involved in developing Bluetooth specifications, including IBM, Intel, Lucent, Microsoft and Motorola. This book is an introduction to the "next big thing" in the world of e-commerce: wireless. It provides e-business executives with a foundation in wireless Web technology - from a business perspective - and a roadmap of how they can develop and execute a winning wireless strategy for their company. It discusses the domestic wireless market, as well as the Eurasian advantages. It identifies the key players and the technology behind the wonder of wireless. Each chapter ends with a condensed executive summary section that distills the chapter into three or four paragraphs. A sister web site will be created, providing the reader with links to the latest information related to wireless e-commerce.

Wireless Quality of Service: Techniques, Standards, and Applications (Wireless Networks and Mobile Communications) Review

Wireless Quality of Service: Techniques, Standards, and Applications (Wireless Networks and Mobile Communications)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book goes into the nuts and bolts of wireless QoS. I only read the parts relating to 802.11, so this review only applies to those parts.
The book focus on the following areas
*Study of the problems QoS is designed to solve
*Details of how the standards implement QoS
*Simulations and studies of the effect of tweaking QoS parameters on performance
Much of the book attempts to spoon-feed the reader the standard and various journal articles on optimizing performance under various conditions. I personally like books to spoon-feed difficult-to-read papers. My only complaint with this book is it does not spoon-feed enough. I often felt like I was reading an IEEE transaction paper. If you don't mind reading scholarly articles, the rigorous style used in this book will appeal to you.
It does not have too much in the way of practical rules of thumb, but the simulations it reviews can be directly applied to real-world problems.
For people interested in 802.11e, I also recommend Next Generation Wireless LANs by Perahia and Stacey. Perahia and Stacey go into more detail on QoS register fields and do a better job explaining it. If you do QoS-intensive work, though, you still need this book. Perahia and Stacey are a little clearer, but they only explain how the standard works. This book explains why they did it how they did it and how to tweak the parameters for various use cases.

Focusing on an important and complicated topic in wireless network design, Wireless Quality of Service: Techniques, Standards, and Applications systematically addresses the quality-of-service (QoS) issues found in many types of popular wireless networks.
In each chapter, the book presents numerous QoS challenges encountered in real-world applications and delineates ways to overcome these obstacles. Some of the challenges explored are performance impairments in WLAN hotspots, video streaming applications, and broadband wireless access. The techniques and mechanisms covered to tackle these problems include medium access and call admission control techniques, a parameter tuning algorithm, the QoS-enabling features of IEEE 802.11e, a Markov chain model, a probe-based distributed admission control mechanism, topology-transparent scheduling protocols, and a novel multicast congestion control mechanism.
Addressing advanced topics and future directions, the expert contributors acknowledge the need for more research to solve several open issues. In the meantime, they offer innovative solutions to solve current QoS problems.
