(More customer reviews)This book could be profitably read in conjunction with another recent release on Mobile Ad Hoc Networks [MANETs] by Boukerche, Algorithms and Protocols for Wireless, Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (Wiley Series on Parallel and Distributed Computing). In the current book, Cheng and Li describe methods for studying or improving the performance of various types of ad hoc networks. Most of the networks covered in the book involve mobile nodes; hence the book is essentially about MANET.
A common theme in the chapters is the need to conserve power in the network nodes. Quite unlike wired nodes, where you can usually assume adequate power.
Routing is seen to be a difficult problem, because of three reasons. The mobility of the nodes leads to a frequent breaking of any tree or graph topology. The low power means message broadcasting and transmission reach is minimal. And supernodes, with universal knowledge of the network, are assumed not to exist.
One difference between the book and Boukerche is that it does not describe the special case of Vehicle Ad Hoc Networks [VANETs], whereas Boukerche has 2 chapters on this.
