Chapter 11 of this book is concerned with porting existing MMX to WirelessMMX. If you are the type that is going to play with MMX code, chances are you have been playing with MMX code, and this chapter is ~the~ chapter that you are looking for.
I haven't read far through the book yet, nor tried the examples, but the reading is very presentable and the topics are well aligned with existing needs for performance optimized software on PDA/Phone devices.
IntelPRESS has good connections with the hardware developers at Intel, and the book has been reviewed by some of the key Intel Developers and Systems Integrators. In a world where correctly surfing the technology wave is the difference between staying afloat and drowning -- I look to IntelPress to keep my head above water.

Wireless Digital Communications: Design & Theory Review

Wireless Digital Communications: Design and Theory
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I should start by saying that I am a member of the organisation that published the book so I might be a bit biased. That said I think that this book is one of the best introductions to Wireless Digital Communications ever written.
It is written to make sense to the person reading it, without the need of advanced maths. By using lots of diagrams and not too many formulas the author takes you on a journey showing you why certain things are the way they are.
If you are looking for a book telling all about various low level modulation techniques for data, this book will give you that grounding. Things such as PSK, FSK, OFDM, ASK, MSG, GMSK are all described in detail, in a way that makes understanding the encoding and decoding processed logical.
This book would make a good introduction to Wireless Digital Communications not only for a University level but even for just an enthusiest who wants to know how this stuff works.
There is a lot in the 15 chapters in this book, and I am still learning things after having had this book for a few years. This book is probably more relevant than it was when it was first published.
Very worthwhile addition to your library.

Mobile Handset Design Review

Mobile Handset Design
Average Reviews:

The title suggests that it would be a design book but the book is short on implementation details. Bulk of the book covers GSM. I expected it to have more WCDMA coverage, implementation schemes and design trade offs. Another issue is that book has spelling mistakes and does not appear to be proof read very well.

Switching to a Mac For Dummies Review

Switching to a Mac For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a novice Mac user and I have been attempting to make the adjustment from using a PC to a Mac. I thought written information would assist in my transition and, after receiving my dummies book, I immediately began reading through it. The Table of Contents makes it easy to find subjects you are looking for. The first chapters of the book are very basic, exactly what you would expect if you were new to the world of Macs. I will say that throughout the book, the author writes as an enthusiastic fan of Mac products and his cheery attitude builds excitement for making the change to Mac. As I skimmed through the information I was familiar with, I learned about the command key and other unique features of the Mac. Chapter 5 was the most helpful one for me because it contained a great table comparing terminology between Windows and Mac. Also included in Chapter 5 was a list of keyboard shortcuts.
Tips, things to remember, and warnings are highlighted throughout the book making it easy to thumb through chapters and find important items. The author spent quite a bit of time discussing passwords and security. One important thing I learned was that the author does not recommend downloading virus protection unless you are also planning to install Windows on your Mac.
I was especially interested in learning about Snow Leopard but was disappointed when reviewing the book. Although the book's cover states "get the most from Mac OS X Snow Leopard" I didn't find any specifics. The book does state that Snow Leopard is an updated version of the Mac operating system and is version 10.6. Information on what makes Snow Leopard a better operating system would have been helpful, even if release notes from Apple had been included.
What helped me: Chapter 5: Mac OS X for Windows Users. This chapter, as I stated earlier in my review, has terminology, keyboard shortcuts, and information on Time Machine and Time Capsule and other differences between Macs and Windows.

What I have yet to explore: IPhoto (Chapter 12), Producing Movies and Music (Chapter 13), and Building Your Space on the Web (Chapter 14). I have uploaded photos to my Mac and my son has used IPhoto to play a slide show accompanied by ITunes music. The slide shows are so much fun to view.
Bottom line recommendation about book: This book provides a good overview of the differences between Macs and Windows. The author definitely is a Mac fan and recommends Macs for their quality. You can find terminology, program information, and lots of tips if you have questions and don't want to search Help on Apple's web site.

WCDMA for UMTS: Radio Access for Third Generation Mobile Communications, 3rd Ed. Review

WCDMA for UMTS: Radio Access for Third Generation Mobile Communications, 3rd Ed.
Average Reviews:

The content is highly technical. Enough "meat" for the practising communications engineer who needs to know this topic well enough to actually develop devices. The book starts off with chapters that give a good general introduction to WCDMA. Explaining in broad terms how it works and the business applications. Where the emphasis is on improving mobile communications, in no small part by permitting higher bandwidth content to be delivered to cellphones.
However, there are implications for the entire network. While the layman just sees her cellphone, the engineer also has to account for changes to the basestation and various radio controllers. Much of the book revolves around explaining what changes are needed.

Real 802.11 Security: Wi-Fi Protected Access and 802.11i Review

Real 802.11 Security: Wi-Fi Protected Access and 802.11i
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the fourth book on 802.11 I have read in 8 weeks and for an important reason. The company I work for is moving more and more to wireless to provide connectivity to our customers.
In terms of understanding architecture, and the cryptography behind the security protocols this was my favorite book. My favorite chapter was the how WEP works and why it doesn't. The writing was clear and the explanations were accurate. I also loved chapter 15, that equipped me to explain why wireless networks are dangerous beasts with detail.
It is a tougher read than some of the other books on the subject, the good news is that you understand the cryptography, the bad news is you have to work through the pages with the crytography.
This is a good book and it is well worth the price. Why did I give it 4 stars instead of 5? It could improve in a couple areas. I think it would have been a stronger, more focused work without chapters 2, 3, and 4. Any reader that is willing to wade through the inner workings of TLS, TKIP or WPA doesn't need a security overview. Also, I really wish more effort had been put into chapter 14, Public Wireless Hotspots. It is good, it covers the fundamentals, but I finished the chapter without increasing my understanding of a question every reader of the book will have. Do I dare check my (encrypted) email at a Starbucks or airport hot spot? That said, I think with second edition the authors will have every chance to take the lead in the crowded field of 802.11 books.
