Droid X For Dummies Review

Droid X For Dummies
Average Reviews:

I recently bought 3 Droid X phones, one for myself and one for each of my sons. Since I am 60 this new technology is harder to learn then perhaps for others. But thanks to Dan Gookin and his book I am using my new Droid like I've had it for months. His book has a wealth of information and covers everything there is to know about the phone except perhaps how to build your own. What I like most is the color pictures since I am a visual learner. Would I buy another one? Absolutely and in fact I did. The next day I went back to the book store and purchased one for my sons. Thanks from a senior citizen!

Sams Teach Yourself Networking in 24 Hours (4th Edition) Review

Sams Teach Yourself Networking in 24 Hours (4th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you don't want to take the time to enroll in a networking course at school, this book will work wonders in helping you understand how the Internet works. It explains the foundations of TCP/IP very well and introduces you, at the surface level, to just about every other protocol in some way, shape or form. You also get into some technical undertones of how different hardwares and softwares work. It will definitely give you a platform to go and further research various topics on the web. I appreciated this very much. I feel like I'm the only person who reviewed, because people might possibly be ashamed of reading 'Teach yourself in 24 hour' books? This book will give you the information you need to carry on an intelligent conversation with anyone, in regards to networking. So, if you don't have the time to read a thick technical book, then this book is for you, but, as all things go, 'of course' there are much more elaborate and technical books out there on the different subject matters this title does cover. I think this book is very good for someone who is a little clueless about networking, like myself at the time, and wants to explore a little.

Signals & Systems Demystified Review

Signals and Systems Demystified
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over all I thought this was a great book. It reviewed the basics I learned in signals and systems over six years ago and taught me some new concepts I wasn't yet aware of. One piece of evidence I have for the quality of this book is: after reading it I was able to pick up a technical journal and felt like I understood most of what they were talking about. Before reading the book I was lost in the technical journals. The math was a little frustrating, but that was simply because I needed to refresh on some things I've forgotten. If you get this book, make sure you work through the problems, it will help out a lot.
Now, I did feel that the book had a few superficial flaws that should be cleaned up for the next printing. The biggest flaws were the lack of tables. The book even refers to Appendix A and Appendix B, and they don't exist in the book I have. (Page 220 refers to Appendix B, and page 118 refers to Appendix A.) These tables really aren't needed, if you are sitting in front of a computer, but if you are reading this book on the plane during takeoff you may feel lost without those tables. I also feel it would be helpful to add a third appendix of common trig identities.
Overall it is a great book.

Communication and Empire: Media, Markets, and Globalization, 1860–1930 (American Encounters/Global Interactions) Review

Communication and Empire: Media, Markets, and Globalization, 1860andndash;1930 (American Encounters/Global Interactions)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although this substantial book is published in the "American Encounters" series of Duke University Press, it is in fact a detailed and almost global account of the role of electronic communications (telegraph, cable, and radio-telegraph) between 1860 and 1930; and of the power of the private companies which ran these communications. It shows that there is nothing new under the sun in international corporate activities: western corporations engaging in cartels, price fixing and exploitation in such regions as Latin America and China. Then, too, just as we talk about "universal access" to the Internet, there were many reformers who sought to regulate communication prices and make telegraph and cable accessible to the average person. (Many of these individuals were, incidentally, Canadians.) Thus "Communication and Empire" strikes a major chord for the contemporary reader.
The book is not an easy read -- lots of detail -- but well worth the effort for social scientists and communication scholars. Do not ignore the footnotes which often explain the social and economic impact of technological advances in electronic communications -- something which some of the reviews of this book, which I have read, seem to have ignored. I highly recommend it, and should note that the paperback edition is reasonably priced, especially considering the quality of the print and illustrations. Stephen Harold Riggins.

Filling in a key chapter in communications history, Dwayne R. Winseck and Robert M. Pike offer an in-depth examination of the rise of the "global media" between 1860 and 1930. They analyze the connections between the development of a global communication infrastructure, the creation of national telegraph and wireless systems, and news agencies and the content they provided. Conventional histories suggest that the growth of global communications correlated with imperial expansion: an increasing number of cables were laid as colonial powers competed for control of resources. Winseck and Pike argue that the role of the imperial contest, while significant, has been exaggerated. They emphasize how much of the global media system was in place before the high tide of imperialism in the early twentieth century, and they point to other factors that drove the proliferation of global media links, including economic booms and busts, initial steps toward multilateralism and international law, and the formation of corporate cartels.Drawing on extensive research in corporate and government archives, Winseck and Pike illuminate the actions of companies and cartels during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth, in many different parts of the globe, including Africa, Asia, and Central and South America as well as Europe and North America. The complex history they relate shows how cable companies exploited or transcended national policies in the creation of the global cable network, how private corporations and government agencies interacted, and how individual reformers fought to eliminate cartels and harmonize the regulation of world communications. In Communication and Empire, the multinational conglomerates, regulations, and the politics of imperialism and anti-imperialism as well as the cries for reform of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth emerge as the obvious forerunners of today's global media.
